Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How much cash can you bring into Nigeria? Declaration rules

There is no cap on cash you bring in, but anything above US$10,000 or its equivalent must be declared to Customs on arrival. What that means in practice.

The short answer

There is no fixed limit on how much cash you can bring into Nigeria, but foreign currency, negotiable instruments or precious metals worth more than US$10,000 (or its equivalent) must be declared to the Nigeria Customs Service when you arrive. Customs officials said in July 2025 that the rule applies "at departure or arrival, without exception" and that undeclared sums may be seized and the traveller prosecuted.

The rule in one line: declare above US$10,000

Many returnees assume there is a ceiling on cash entering Nigeria. There is not a ceiling as such; there is a declaration threshold. If what you carry is worth more than US$10,000, you must tell Customs on arrival. Below that, you do not need to declare. The threshold covers foreign currency and, according to Customs officers at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, also precious metals and negotiable instruments such as cheques or bearer instruments above the same value.

At a sensitisation event reported by Peoples Gazette on 9 July 2025, the Customs Area Controller at MMIA, Effiong Harrison, and Assistant Comptroller Mas'ud Salihu (anti-money laundering) said the amount "must be declared at departure or arrival, without exception". The same report says the EFCC, NFIU, DSS and FAAN warned that undeclared funds may be seized or confiscated and offenders prosecuted. The article frames the rule under Nigeria's anti-money laundering laws; it does not name a section or a fine. BusinessDay reported on 25 August 2025 that Customs had reiterated the same requirement to declare "any cash above $10,000 or its equivalent".

What counts towards the US$10,000

  • All currencies together. US$6,000 plus £4,000 in the same bag is well over the threshold once converted.
  • Cash carried for someone else. If your sister gives you US$5,000 for her landlord and you have US$6,000 of your own, you are carrying US$11,000.
  • Negotiable instruments and precious metals, per the Customs officials quoted in July 2025.
  • Travellers moving as a family: ask the officer whether each adult's cash is assessed separately or together, and declare if in doubt.

Naira cash is a separate question. If you are carrying naira notes into the country, ask Customs or the CBN about current limits before you travel; the July 2025 report addressed foreign currency only.

A worked example

This is an example, not a rate: suppose you carry US$7,000 and £2,500, and the pound is worth about US$1.30 on the day. £2,500 × 1.30 = US$3,250. US$7,000 + US$3,250 = US$10,250. That is above US$10,000, so you declare the whole amount. Check the actual cross rate on the day you fly; a small currency move can push you over.

How declaring works on arrival

  1. Before you land, add up everything you carry in US dollar terms, including cash for other people.
  2. Keep documents that show where the money came from: bank withdrawal slips, a bureau receipt, payslips or a sale agreement.
  3. On arrival, go to the Customs desk or currency declaration point before you exit the arrivals hall, and say you have cash to declare.
  4. Complete the declaration form. BusinessDay reported in August 2025, citing Customs, that forms are available at airline counters; if you did not get one, ask the Customs officer. Write the exact amounts by currency.
  5. Keep your copy. You may need it to show a bank where the cash came from when you deposit it, or when you leave Nigeria with unspent funds.

Customs officers said in the 2025 report that airlines submit electronic passenger manifests before arrival, but there was no mention of an online declaration for travellers. Plan to declare in person.

Why carrying large cash is often the wrong choice

Declaring is legal and simple, but cash has costs that travellers underestimate:

  • Theft and loss. Cash in a suitcase is not insured in the way a bank balance is.
  • Deposit questions. A Nigerian bank receiving a large foreign-cash deposit will ask for source of funds, and your declaration copy is the first thing it will want.
  • Exchange spreads. Changing large amounts of cash can come at a worse rate than converting money already in an account.
  • Seizure risk. Forgetting to declare, or declaring the wrong amount, can lead to seizure while the matter is investigated.

If the goal is to have money ready when you land, moving it by bank transfer before you travel usually leaves a cleaner record. Our guide to bringing foreign currency cash into Nigeria covers depositing cash once you arrive, and the rules for the other direction are in how much cash you can carry out of Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal account can be opened from abroad and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each, so money can travel ahead of you as a transfer rather than in a bag (multicurrency accounts). It stays in the currency it arrived in; when you need naira, Swap shows the rate first and the fee on its own line, and you approve. Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, licensed by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit.

Questions people ask

Is there a limit to how much dollars I can bring into Nigeria?

There is no fixed cap, but amounts above US$10,000 or its equivalent must be declared to Customs on arrival, according to Customs officials at Lagos airport in July 2025. Declaring does not attract duty.

What happens if I don't declare cash above $10,000 at a Nigerian airport?

Customs, the EFCC, NFIU, DSS and FAAN warned in July 2025 that undeclared funds may be seized or confiscated and offenders prosecuted. Declare if you are near the threshold.

Do I add pounds and euros to dollars for the $10,000 limit?

Yes. The threshold is a value, so convert every currency you carry into US dollars at the day's rate and add them together, including cash you carry for someone else.

Can I deposit declared dollars in a Nigerian bank?

Banks generally ask for source of funds on large foreign-cash deposits. Keep your Customs declaration copy and any withdrawal or sale documents to show the bank.
