Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Holding dollars in Nigeria vs the US: the trade-offs

Deposit insurance, access, FX rules and tax for dollars kept in a Nigerian domiciliary account versus a US bank, compared side by side.

The short answer

Dollars in a US bank have FDIC cover of at least $250,000 per depositor per ownership category at each insured bank, and you can spend them where you live. Dollars in a Nigerian domiciliary account are useful for costs at home and are covered by the NDIC only within its naira-denominated limits, with withdrawals and transfers governed by CBN foreign exchange rules. Most people in the US keep the bulk in the US and a working amount in Nigeria.

Deposit insurance

The FDIC insures deposits at FDIC-insured banks to at least $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category, at each bank, covering checking, savings, money market deposit accounts and CDs (FDIC, updated 1 April 2024). It does not cover investments such as stocks, bonds or crypto, even when sold through a bank.

NDIC cover works in naira. Its FAQ sets the maximum at ₦5,000,000 per depositor for deposit money banks and ₦2,000,000 for microfinance banks, with balances across a bank’s branches combined and each bank insured separately. For a dollar balance the figures are small: at an example rate of ₦1,350 to $1, ₦5,000,000 is about $3,704. How a domiciliary balance would be valued and paid in a failure is not spelt out on the NDIC page we read; a July 2024 nairaCompare explainer says foreign currency deposits are insured but paid out in naira. Treat dollars in Nigeria above that small figure as relying on the bank’s own soundness. Our article on whether a dom account has FDIC cover goes into this.

Access and FX rules

Dollars in the US are simply your money in your country of residence. Dollars in Nigeria sit under CBN foreign exchange rules, which change. The CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, as summarised by Pavestones in June 2026, removed the Form A requirement for outward transfers by holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts and allows direct transfers of up to $10,000 a day. That makes a dom account more usable than it was, but it is still a rulebook you do not control. Cash also costs: Access Bank’s domiciliary FAQ lists a 0.5% cash handling charge on withdrawals.

On the other side, a dollar balance already in Nigeria is handy for dollar-priced costs there, such as some school fees, travel or property payments, without a fresh transfer each time.

Tax and reporting

For a US citizen or resident, interest earned in either country is part of worldwide income (IRS Publication 54, December 2025). In Nigeria, PwC’s summary (May 2026) notes that interest on foreign currency domiciliary accounts is no longer exempt, and that non-residents are taxed on Nigerian-sourced income, so Nigerian withholding on dom interest may apply. Holding money in Nigeria also triggers the FBAR once your foreign accounts together exceed $10,000 at any point in the year (IRS FBAR page). This is information, not tax advice.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

You hold $40,000 in savings. Keeping $34,000 in a US savings account and $6,000 in a Nigerian dom account for a planned building payment means $34,000 sits within FDIC cover, while the $6,000 in Nigeria exceeds the NDIC deposit money bank maximum at the example rate above by about $2,296 ($6,000 − $3,704), and the $6,000 alone does not trigger the FBAR. Add a naira account holding $5,000 equivalent and your foreign total reaches $11,000, so the FBAR applies.

Interest rates

Interest on domiciliary accounts in Nigeria is usually low or nil on current accounts, and US high-yield savings and CDs pay variable rates set by each bank. Compare the rate each bank shows today, after tax in both countries, rather than assuming either side pays more. A higher rate in Nigeria does not offset a balance that sits above deposit insurance limits.

A sensible split

  • Keep your emergency fund and long-term dollar savings in the US.
  • Hold dollars in Nigeria only for dated dollar costs there, and move them shortly before they are due.
  • Spread larger balances across banks if you must hold them in Nigeria, since NDIC cover is per bank.
  • Keep records of where each dollar came from; Nigerian banks and US banks both ask.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account opened from the US holds dollars, naira, pounds and euros with local account details for each, so you can keep a working dollar amount next to naira and move between them with Swap when you choose, seeing the rate and fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme’s services are provided through regulated partners; naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. See the multicurrency account and domiciliary vs multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Is it safer to keep dollars in Nigeria or America?

For deposit insurance, the US: FDIC cover is at least $250,000 per depositor per category per bank, while NDIC limits are set in naira and are far lower in dollar terms.

Does NDIC insure domiciliary accounts?

The NDIC FAQ we read does not say how FX deposits are paid. A nairaCompare explainer says they are insured but paid in naira, within the naira limit.

Can I transfer dollars from my dom account abroad?

Under the CBN FX Manual 2026, holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts can make direct transfers up to $10,000 a day, according to a June 2026 legal summary.

Is interest on my Nigerian dom account taxable in the US?

Yes, for US citizens and residents, as part of worldwide income.
