Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Holding pounds or dollars as a Nigerian living in Italy

You earn euros. When does holding pounds or dollars make sense, which conversion costs to watch, and where you can keep each currency from Italy.

The short answer

Holding pounds or dollars makes sense when you have a real future cost or income in that currency, such as UK or US study fees, a planned move, dollar-priced costs in Nigeria or income paid in dollars. Otherwise it adds two conversions and exchange-rate risk against your euro costs. If you do hold them, use an account that keeps each currency separately and converts only when you choose.

Many Nigerian families think in dollars and have relatives in the UK, so keeping some pounds or dollars feels natural even while living in Italy. Sometimes it is sensible planning. Sometimes it is an expensive habit. The test is simple: what will this money be spent on, and in what currency?

When it makes sense

  • A known cost in that currency: a child's UK university fees, US exam fees, a family member's dollar-priced costs in Nigeria.
  • Income that arrives in it: fees from a UK client, a dollar payment from a Nigerian payer's domiciliary account.
  • A planned move to the UK or US in the next few years.
  • Deliberate diversification, accepting that the value in euros will rise and fall.

When it costs you

If your income is in euros and your costs are in euros, buying pounds or dollars means converting twice, once in and once back, with a margin each time, and carrying the risk that the currency weakens against the euro while you hold it.

Where you can hold them from Italy

WhereCurrenciesPoints to check
Italian bank foreign-currency account (conto in valuta)Varies by bank; askMonthly fee, conversion margin, extra-SEPA charges on incoming transfers
Nigerian domiciliary accountUSD, GBP, EUR at banks such as GTBank, UBA and FidelityOpening from abroad, transfer charges, $10,000-a-day outward transfer limit
Multicurrency account with a regulated providerVariesWhether each currency has its own account details, and how conversions are priced

In Italy, a foreign-currency transfer arriving into a euro account is converted by your bank at its rate. On one Banco BPM group tariff (June 2025), an incoming extra-SEPA transfer in a foreign currency costs €15.00 plus 2 per mille (minimum €3.50) and carries a four-business-day value date when converted. Receiving dollars into a dollar balance avoids that conversion, but check the account's own fees.

Nigerian domiciliary accounts

The CBN's FX Manual 2026, as reported by TheCable, lets individuals pay into domiciliary accounts without disclosing the source of funds and transfer up to $10,000 a day abroad. Remittance-app money sent to Nigeria is paid in naira, not dollars, so a domiciliary account is funded mainly by SWIFT transfers or by payers who hold foreign currency. For opening one from Italy, see opening a Nigerian domiciliary account from Italy; for the currency choice, see euro or dollar domiciliary account.

Building a balance for a known cost

If you know you will need pounds or dollars on a date, such as UK university fees in two years, you can convert in stages rather than all at once. Converting a quarter of the target every six months spreads the exchange-rate risk: you will not catch the best rate, but you avoid putting everything through on the worst day. Keep each conversion in a balance in that currency, so it is not converted back by default.

Italian tax and reporting

If you are tax resident in Italy, accounts held outside Italy, including Nigerian and UK accounts, generally go in the quadro RW of your return and can attract IVAFE; see IVAFE on Nigerian bank accounts. Large foreign-currency balances can have other Italian tax consequences, so ask a CAF or commercialista if you hold significant sums.

Remember that a dollar or pound balance in Nigeria and one in Italy are not the same thing for access: money in a Nigerian domiciliary account still has to travel by SWIFT, with charges, before you can spend it in Italy.

What to check first

  1. Name the cost or income the currency is for, and when.
  2. Estimate the round-trip cost: two margins plus transfer fees.
  3. Decide how much exchange-rate risk you can live with.
  4. Pick an account that holds the currency without forcing conversion.
  5. Keep records for your Italian return.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds euros, pounds, dollars and naira, each with local details, so money that arrives in pounds or dollars stays in that currency until you Swap. The app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, our foreign-currency services are provided through regulated partners. See multicurrency accounts and Swap.

Questions people ask

Should I keep dollars if I live in Italy and earn euros?

Only if you have a real dollar cost or income. Otherwise you pay two conversion margins and carry exchange-rate risk.

Can I have a pound or dollar account in Italy?

Some Italian banks offer foreign-currency accounts, often in dollars. Check the monthly fee and conversion charges.

Do I declare foreign currency accounts in Italy?

If you are tax resident, accounts held abroad generally go in the quadro RW and can attract IVAFE.

Is it cheaper to receive dollars into a dollar account?

Usually, because it avoids your bank converting to euros on arrival. Incoming SWIFT charges may still apply.
