Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2018OjirehPrime Card

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Multicurrency

Should your business hold dollars or convert to naira?

A simple treasury policy for Nigerian SMEs that earn foreign currency: how much to hold, when to convert, and how to avoid guessing the exchange rate.

The short answer

Hold enough foreign currency to cover your known foreign payments, such as supplier balances and software, and convert the rest to naira on a regular schedule to cover local costs. Trying to time the exchange rate usually fails. A written rule, for example converting a fixed share of each receipt, protects your cash flow whichever way the naira moves.

The real question

When a Nigerian business earns dollars, pounds or euros, the temptation is to hold everything and wait for a better rate. Sometimes the naira weakens and holding pays off. Sometimes it strengthens and the business finds it has been sitting on foreign currency while borrowing naira to pay salaries. The question is not where the rate will go, which nobody can tell you, but what your business needs and when.

Match currencies to costs

Start by listing your costs by currency for the next three to six months:

CostCurrencyExample monthly amount
Staff salaries and pensionNGN₦6,000,000
Rent, power, dieselNGN₦1,500,000
Software subscriptionsUSDUS$600
Supplier or contractor abroadUSDUS$2,000
Taxes in NigeriaNGNAs assessed

The figures are examples. The principle is that foreign-currency costs are a natural reason to hold foreign currency, because you avoid converting twice. Naira costs need naira, and converting to meet them is not a loss; it is the business doing what it exists to do.

A simple treasury policy

  1. Foreign reserve. Hold enough foreign currency to cover the next three months of known foreign payments.
  2. Naira runway. Keep enough naira to cover a set period of local costs, for example two months.
  3. Regular conversion. Convert a fixed share of each foreign receipt, or a fixed amount on a set day each month, to keep the naira runway topped up.
  4. Surplus. Decide in advance what happens to anything above both targets: hold, convert, or split.
  5. Review. Revisit the policy every quarter, not every time the rate moves.

Converting on a schedule averages out the rate over time. You will never hit the best day, but you will rarely hit the worst one either, and you will never be forced to convert in a hurry. For tools such as forwards and natural hedging, see hedging currency risk for small businesses.

A worked example

Example only. An Enugu digital agency receives US$10,000 a month from clients abroad. Its naira costs are ₦7,500,000 a month and its foreign costs are US$2,600 a month.

  • Foreign reserve target: 3 × US$2,600 = US$7,800.
  • Naira runway target: 2 × ₦7,500,000 = ₦15,000,000.
  • Policy: convert 60% of each receipt on the day it arrives, hold the rest.
  • Each month: US$6,000 is converted. At an example rate of ₦1,500 per dollar, that gives ₦9,000,000, covering local costs with ₦1,500,000 to rebuild the runway.
  • The remaining US$4,000 pays US$2,600 of foreign costs and adds US$1,400 to the reserve until it reaches the target.

Once both targets are met, the agency splits any surplus half and half. If the rate moves sharply, it does not change the policy mid-month; it discusses it at the quarterly review.

Why timing the rate rarely works

Waiting for a better rate feels prudent, but it carries hidden costs. While you hold, you may delay paying suppliers, miss early-payment discounts, or borrow naira at a high cost to cover salaries. And because the rate can move either way, a business that holds everything is making a one-way bet with its working capital. A scheduled rule removes the emotion. The owner no longer needs to watch the rate every day, staff know when conversions happen, and the accounts show a steady pattern that is easy to explain to a bank, an investor or a tax adviser.

If you do want to take a view, limit it to the surplus above your targets, and decide the share in advance. That way a wrong call affects money you did not need, not next month's payroll.

Writing the policy down

A one-page note is enough: the reserve target, the runway target, the conversion rule, who approves conversions, and the review date. Share it with whoever handles payments, so decisions do not depend on the owner being available.

Things that change the answer

  • Big naira bills ahead, such as annual rent or tax, mean converting more in advance.
  • Planned imports mean holding more foreign currency, but remember that goods imports go through your bank's Form M process; see how to pay a foreign supplier.
  • Export proceeds must follow the CBN's rules for your export domiciliary account; see business domiciliary accounts.
  • Accounting. Holding foreign balances means you will record exchange gains and losses; see foreign currency accounting.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR together, and money stays in the currency it arrived in until you choose to convert. Swap shows the rate first and the fee on its own line, and nothing happens until you approve, which suits a scheduled conversion rule. The Finance agent can prepare the monthly conversion for a person to approve above a set ceiling.

Questions people ask

Should I keep my business money in dollars in Nigeria?

Hold enough foreign currency for known foreign payments and convert the rest on a schedule to cover naira costs. Avoid trying to time the rate.

When is the best time to convert dollars to naira?

Nobody can predict it reliably. Converting a fixed share or amount on a regular schedule averages the rate and protects cash flow.

How much foreign currency should a small business hold?

A common approach is enough to cover a few months of known foreign costs, with a separate naira runway for local costs.

Is converting dollars to naira a loss?

No. If your costs are in naira, converting to pay them is normal business. The aim is to convert in a planned way, not in a hurry.
