Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

HMRC certificate of residence for a Nigerian client

How a UK freelancer asks HMRC for a certificate of residence to show a Nigerian payer, what the form asks, and what the certificate does not do.

The short answer

Individuals and sole traders apply to HMRC for a certificate of residence through the GOV.UK online service (or an emailable form that needs no sign-in), naming the UK–Nigeria double taxation agreement, the type of income, the treaty article and the period. HMRC issues it only if you are UK resident and entitled to the treaty's benefits, and it is Nigeria, not HMRC, that decides whether to reduce the tax it deducts.

A certificate of residence is HMRC's written confirmation that you are resident in the UK for the purposes of a particular tax treaty. Nigerian payers and their advisers use it as the evidence behind any treaty-based reduction in withholding tax. Without it, a finance team in Lagos or Abuja has little reason to depart from the domestic rate.

Who can apply

GOV.UK says you can apply if you are classed as UK resident and there is a double taxation agreement with the other country. The UK and Nigeria signed theirs in London on 9 June 1987, so that test is met for Nigeria. HMRC will not issue a certificate if you are not entitled to treaty benefits under the agreement, so a person who is resident in both countries, or whose Nigerian work runs through a fixed base in Nigeria, should check their position before applying.

How to apply, by type of business

You areRoute on GOV.UK
An individual or sole traderOnline service (sign in, or create sign-in details), or an email form with no sign-in
An agent for an individualOnline, with agent services Government Gateway details
A limited companyRES1 online service (Local Compliance or Large Business)
A partnershipRES1, or post to Pay As You Earn and Self Assessment, HMRC, BX9 1AS

What HMRC asks you to state

  • Why you need the certificate (for example, a Nigerian client deducting WHT).
  • The double taxation agreement: the UK–Nigeria convention.
  • The income type and the treaty article you rely on.
  • The period it should cover, if different from the issue date.
  • Confirmation of beneficial ownership and UK tax liability, where the agreement requires it.
  • If no Self Assessment return has been filed for a period from 6 April 2013: days in the UK, arrival or departure dates, and Statutory Residence Test details.

Choosing the article

Getting the article right matters, because it tells Nigeria which rule you are relying on. In the 1987 convention, Article 7 covers business profits (taxable only where you are resident unless you have a permanent establishment in the other country); Article 14 covers independent personal services such as professional, literary, artistic and teaching work, taxable only in your residence country unless you have a fixed base regularly available in the other; Article 12 limits tax on royalties at source to 12.5% of the gross; and Article 17 lets the country where an entertainer performs tax the performance income. A consultant would usually point to Article 14 or 7, a songwriter to Article 12, a DJ to Article 17. Our Nigeria library summarises what the treaty covers.

If Nigeria has its own form

GOV.UK says that where the other country provides its own residence form, you send that form to HMRC to certify, and individuals post it to the address above. If your client's adviser asks for a specific Nigerian template, send that rather than relying on the standard certificate.

What the certificate does and does not do

GOV.UK is explicit that the overseas authority decides whether foreign tax relief is granted. The certificate is evidence, not a refund. It does not stop a payer deducting tax, and the page gives no processing time or fee. Apply well before a large invoice is paid, and keep a copy for each tax year: a payer will often want one that covers the year of payment.

Worked example

Example only. A London illustrator licenses artwork to a Nigerian publisher for a £1,500 royalty. She applies for a certificate under Article 12. The publisher's WHT on royalties to an individual is 5% under the 2024 Regulations, per PwC's summary, which is £75 and already below the 12.5% treaty cap, so the certificate does not change the deduction. It still helps: HMRC limits foreign tax credit to the lower of the foreign tax paid (or the treaty rate) and the UK tax on the same income, as HS263 explains, so a clean record of the £75 makes the credit simple.

Steps

  1. Confirm you are UK resident for the tax year and have no Nigerian fixed base.
  2. Pick the treaty article that fits the income.
  3. Apply online on GOV.UK, or by the email form.
  4. Send the certificate, or the certified Nigerian form, to the payer before payment.
  5. Keep the WHT receipt and claim credit on your Self Assessment return.

If you trade through a limited company

When your Nigerian client pays your UK company rather than you, the company is the taxpayer, so the company applies for the certificate through the RES1 service and the invoice, contract and WHT receipt should all name the company. A certificate in your personal name will not support a deduction on a payment made to the company.

Where Pryme fits

Keep the certificate, the WHT receipt and the bank record of the net payment together. With Pryme you can generate a regular or verifiable statement for any payment, through our partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, which an adviser can check is unaltered (receipts and statements). For the deduction itself see the paperwork Nigerian payers want and claiming the credit in the UK.

Questions people ask

How long does HMRC take to issue a certificate of residence?

The GOV.UK page does not give a processing time. Apply before you need it.

Is there a fee for a UK certificate of residence?

The GOV.UK guidance does not mention a fee.

Can I get one if I moved to the UK this year?

Possibly. If you have not filed a return for the period, HMRC asks for UK days, arrival dates and Statutory Residence Test details.

Does the certificate force my Nigerian client to cut WHT?

No. It is evidence of UK residence. The Nigerian payer and tax authority decide what relief applies.
