Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Using a Canadian HELOC to fund a house in Nigeria

How a home equity line of credit works, what it costs, whether the interest is deductible and the currency risk of a CAD debt funding a naira asset.

The short answer

A Canadian HELOC lets you borrow up to 65% of your home's value at a variable rate, usually prime plus a margin, and you can use the money anywhere, including for a build in Nigeria. The catch is that you carry a Canadian-dollar debt secured on your Canadian home against an asset priced in naira, the rate can change at any time, and interest on money used for a family house abroad is not tax-deductible.

For homeowners in Canada, a home equity line of credit (HELOC) is often the cheapest borrowing on offer, and it is tempting to draw on it to finish a house in Lagos, Abuja or the village. Before you do, understand how the product works and what can go wrong when the debt and the asset sit in different currencies.

How a HELOC works

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (page modified 15 October 2025) describes a HELOC as revolving credit secured by your home:

  • You can borrow up to 65% of your home's value. A HELOC combined with a mortgage needs at least 20% equity; a standalone HELOC needs more than 35%.
  • Most rates are variable, typically the lender's prime rate plus a margin (FCAC's example is prime plus 1%). The lender may change the rate at any time and must give written notice within 30 days.
  • You pay interest only on what you draw. The lender may require interest-only payments or principal plus interest.
  • Set-up and running costs can include appraisal, legal, title search, administration and monthly fees, plus cancellation or discharge fees when you close it.
  • Combined with a mortgage, it is often called a readvanceable mortgage: available credit rises as you pay the mortgage down.

FCAC's own risk list is short and blunt: rising rates make repayment harder, paying only interest never clears the debt, easy access encourages overborrowing, and if you do not repay, the lender can take your home.

A worked example

Example only: you draw CAD 100,000 over a year to fund a build, at an example rate of 6% (prime plus a margin, not a quote).

ItemExample figure
Annual interest, interest-onlyCAD 6,000
Monthly interestCAD 500
If the rate rises to 8%CAD 8,000 a year, CAD 666.67 a month
Principal still owed after 5 years of interest-only paymentsCAD 100,000
Interest paid over those 5 years at 6%CAD 30,000

Builds in Nigeria are often paid in stages. Drawing only when each stage is due keeps the interest down, compared with drawing the full amount at once and leaving it idle in naira.

The currency mismatch

Your debt is in Canadian dollars. Once converted, the money buys materials and labour priced in naira, and the finished house is valued in naira. If the naira weakens, the house is worth fewer Canadian dollars while the HELOC balance does not change. A weaker naira can also make later stages cheaper to fund from Canada, so the effect cuts both ways, but the debt itself never shrinks with the exchange rate. Plan to repay from Canadian income, not from selling or renting the Nigerian property.

Each conversion carries a margin against the mid-market rate plus any transfer fee; for how those costs add up, see the total cost of a transfer from Canada to Nigeria.

Is the interest tax-deductible?

Not for a family home. CRA allows most interest on money borrowed to earn investment income such as interest and dividends (line 22100 page, modified 20 January 2026); borrowing for personal use does not qualify. If the Nigerian property will be rented out with a reasonable expectation of profit, the interest on the money traced to it may be claimable against the rent, and the rent itself is reportable in Canada. See Lagos rental income on form T776 and is interest on money borrowed to invest in Nigeria deductible. Keep the HELOC draws for the property separate from personal spending so the use of the money can be shown.

A rental property abroad is also specified foreign property for Form T1135 if the total cost of your foreign property passes $100,000; property used mainly for personal purposes is excluded (CRA Q&A, modified 19 October 2026).

What to check first

  1. Ask your lender for the current rate, the margin over prime and every fee in writing.
  2. Price the whole build in naira with a contingency, then convert at a cautious rate.
  3. Work out the monthly interest at today's rate and at two points higher.
  4. Decide how and when the principal will be repaid, not just the interest.
  5. Get title checked in Nigeria before the first draw.

Where Pryme fits

When you pay builders in stages, a Pryme account opened from Canada can hold naira and USD; Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve each conversion, and a verifiable receipt from VerifyDoc.ai for each payment gives you a clean paper trail of where the borrowed money went.

Questions people ask

Can I use a HELOC to build a house in Nigeria?

Yes. A HELOC can be spent anywhere. The loan is secured on your Canadian home, so you repay it in Canadian dollars whatever happens to the naira or the build.

How much can I borrow on a HELOC in Canada?

Up to 65% of your home's value, according to FCAC, with at least 20% equity when combined with a mortgage and more than 35% for a standalone HELOC.

Is HELOC interest deductible if I build in Nigeria?

Not for a home you or family will use. Interest on money used to earn income, such as a rental, may be claimable; keep records showing where the money went.

Can the HELOC rate change?

Yes. Most HELOCs are variable, typically prime plus a margin, and the lender must tell you in writing within 30 days of a change.
