Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Health insurance for parents in Nigeria paid from SA

How Nigerian HMO and state health insurance plans for older parents work, what they usually exclude, reported 2024 to 2026 prices and how to pay from SA.

The short answer

Your parents can be covered by a private HMO plan or their state's health insurance scheme, both regulated under the NHIA Act 2022, which makes health insurance mandatory for residents. Check that the HMO is NHIA-accredited, read the exclusions and waiting periods for pre-existing conditions, and pay the premium yearly into the HMO's or scheme's own account. Reported prices range from a Lagos seniors plan of ₦34,000 (2024) to private seniors plans above ₦1 million a year (2026).

Paying for parents' health care from South Africa often means a series of emergency transfers. Insurance turns some of that into a predictable yearly premium. Nigerian cover for older people has limits, so the aim is to choose a plan whose rules you understand before you need it.

How health insurance works in Nigeria

KPMG's commentary on the National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022 notes that section 14 makes health insurance mandatory for every resident, that states run State Health Insurance Schemes and set their contribution rates, and that the Act provides a Vulnerable Group Fund covering the aged among others. In practice, cover comes through two channels:

  • State schemes, such as Lagos's Ilera Eko through LASHMA, or Abuja's FHIS. Mypryme's Ledger covers healthcare costs in Abuja and FHIS.
  • Private HMOs, which sell individual and family plans and assign a primary care hospital.

HMOs accredited by the NHIA carry NHIA code numbers, as Nairametrics reported in 2024. Ask an HMO for its NHIA accreditation before paying.

What plans for older parents cost

Plan (source, date)Reported annual premiumNotes
Lagos Ilera Eko Seniors Couples (KPMG, Aug 2024)₦34,000 / ₦65,000Figures from the 2024 executive order summary
Lagos Ilera Eko Diaspora plan (KPMG, Aug 2024)₦71,190 / ₦353,490Listed as individual and family
Bastion HMO Seniors, Oak (company blog, Feb 2026)₦290,109Age 55+
Bastion HMO Seniors, Blossom₦461,554Age 55+
Bastion HMO Seniors, Golden₦1,068,507Age 55+

These are examples of what has been published, not a recommendation, and we did not check Bastion's NHIA status. Prices change; ask each scheme or HMO for its current schedule in writing. Bastion's blog says its seniors plan covers pre-existing conditions such as hypertension and diabetes with no waiting period for chronic care and mentions paying from abroad; check the plan document for the actual terms.

Read these terms before paying

  • Waiting periods: a NairaCompare guide (July 2026) says waiting periods of 6 to 12 months for pre-existing conditions are common. Edo's EDOHIC sets a 30-day waiting period and covers pre-existing conditions after six months.
  • Co-payments: EDOHIC lists a 10% co-pay on drugs and laboratory tests and 50% on selected services. Private plans vary.
  • Exclusions: older parents often need dialysis, cancer care or surgery. The NHIA FAQ says dialysis cover is limited to six sessions a year in the programme it describes and that there are exclusions and partial exclusions. Ask for the full exclusion list.
  • Hospital list: make sure a good hospital near your parents is on the plan, and ask how referrals to specialists work.
  • Emergencies: how to get treatment at a non-listed hospital, and how quickly the HMO must be told.

State scheme or private HMO?

QuestionState schemePrivate HMO
PriceUsually lower, set by the stateHigher, varies by plan
HospitalsAccredited public and some private facilitiesNetwork chosen by the HMO
Pre-existing conditionsSet by scheme rules and waiting periodsVaries; some seniors plans cover sooner
EnrolmentOften needs state residency ID (Lagos asks for a LASSRA number)Direct with the HMO

KPMG's 2024 summary of the Lagos executive order says a LASSRA number is a prerequisite for Ilera Eko and that enrolment is through the LASHMA website or accredited HMOs. Some families combine both: a state plan for routine care and savings for what it excludes.

Questions to ask before you pay

  1. Which hospitals near my parents are on the plan, and can we change hospital?
  2. What is excluded, and what is the limit on admissions and surgery?
  3. How long is the waiting period for my parents' existing conditions?
  4. How do referrals to specialists work, and how fast?
  5. Can I pay yearly from abroad, and will you send the receipt and member ID by email?

Paying the premium from South Africa

  1. Get the HMO's or scheme's invoice in your parent's name, with the account name, bank and NUBAN.
  2. Pay the organisation's account directly; we did not confirm which BoP code a bank uses for a premium paid to a Nigerian insurer, so ask your bank; if you send to a parent who pays, a gift (401) usually fits.
  3. Ask for the enrolment confirmation, the parent's member ID and the hospital assigned.
  4. Diarise the renewal date a month ahead.

If something goes wrong, the NHIA FAQ says complaints can go through NHIA offices, the HMO or its call centre.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account opened from South Africa can hold the yearly premium in naira and pay the HMO with Send. Your Personal Assistant can prepare the renewal payment and a reminder a month before the cover ends, but nothing moves until you approve (assistant).

Questions people ask

Can I buy health insurance for my parents in Nigeria from South Africa?

Yes. You can pay an HMO or state scheme from abroad; your parents usually complete enrolment with ID and are assigned a hospital.

Do Nigerian HMOs cover pre-existing conditions for older parents?

Some do after a waiting period, often 6 to 12 months; some seniors plans say they cover chronic conditions sooner. Read the plan's exclusions.

How much is health insurance for elderly parents in Nigeria?

Published examples range from Lagos's 2024 seniors plan at ₦34,000 to private seniors plans of ₦290,109 to ₦1,068,507 a year in 2026.

How do I check an HMO is accredited?

Ask for its NHIA accreditation and code number, and confirm with the NHIA if unsure.
