Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Health insurance on the ACA marketplace for green card holders

Green card holders can buy Marketplace plans and get savings if income is 100% to 400% of the poverty level. What changes for 2027 and key deadlines.

The short answer

Green card holders can buy health insurance on the ACA Marketplace (HealthCare.gov or their state's exchange) as lawfully present immigrants, and can get savings such as the premium tax credit if household income is 100% to 400% of the federal poverty level. From 1 January 2027, Marketplace savings are limited to green card holders, Cuban or Haitian entrants and COFA migrants, so other family members on visas may still buy plans but without savings.

For many Nigerian families, the first US health insurance comes through a job. But not every job offers cover, and many newcomers are self-employed, between jobs or working part-time. The Marketplace is the main alternative, and green card holders are firmly inside it.

Who can buy a Marketplace plan

HealthCare.gov says to buy a Marketplace plan you must live in the US, be a US citizen or national or lawfully present, and not be incarcerated. Lawfully present includes qualified non-citizens such as lawful permanent residents, people with humanitarian statuses, and people with valid non-immigrant visas.

Savings: the premium tax credit

Savings come in two forms: the premium tax credit, which lowers your monthly premium, and cost-sharing reductions on some plans, which lower deductibles and copays. HealthCare.gov says lawfully present immigrants in the eligible groups may qualify if household income is 100% to 400% of the federal poverty level.

What changes on 1 January 2027

From 1 January 2027, HealthCare.gov says savings are limited to:

  • lawful permanent residents (green card holders)
  • Cuban or Haitian entrants
  • COFA migrants (from Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau)

Other lawfully present statuses can still buy Marketplace coverage, but without savings. For Nigerian households this matters most in mixed-status families. If you have a green card but your spouse is on an H-4 or F-2 visa, you may still qualify for savings for yourself, while your spouse's share is likely to be priced without savings. Check each person's eligibility when you apply for 2027 cover.

Medicaid and the five-year wait

If your income is low, Medicaid may be an option, but HealthCare.gov says qualified non-citizens are generally eligible for Medicaid and CHIP only five years after getting that status. There is no wait for green card holders who were previously refugees or asylees, and states can remove the wait for pregnant people and children who are lawfully residing. Medicaid may cover treatment of an emergency medical condition even without an eligible immigration status, if you meet the other criteria. See Medicaid for green card holders for state detail.

Key dates for 2027 cover

DateWhat happens
1 NovemberOpen enrolment for 2027 starts
15 DecemberLast day to enrol for cover starting 1 January
15 JanuaryLast day of open enrolment
After thatOnly a Special Enrollment Period, triggered by life events

Source: HealthCare.gov dates and deadlines. States that run their own exchanges may set different dates, so check your state's site. Moving to the US or gaining lawful status are among the events that can open a Special Enrollment Period; apply soon after, as the window is limited.

Worked example: a mixed-status household

Example only. Ngozi has a green card and earns around 250% of the federal poverty level for her household. Her husband is on an H-4 visa without work authorisation and they have a US-born child.

  • For 2027, Ngozi may qualify for the premium tax credit because she is a green card holder.
  • Their child, a US citizen, is assessed as a citizen and may qualify for savings, Medicaid or CHIP depending on income and state rules.
  • Her husband can buy a Marketplace plan but, under the 2027 rule, without savings.
  • They compare a family Marketplace plan with any cover her employer offers before 15 December.

The household's total cost depends on the plans available in their county; HealthCare.gov shows prices with savings applied once you enter your details.

How to apply

  1. Go to HealthCare.gov, or your state's own exchange if it runs one.
  2. Enter everyone in your tax household; HealthCare.gov says to include parents only if you will claim them as tax dependants.
  3. Give each person's immigration document details exactly as printed; the Marketplace verifies them and may ask you to upload copies if the check does not match.
  4. Estimate your household income for the coverage year, not last year's.
  5. Compare plans on total cost: premium after savings, deductible and out-of-pocket maximum.
  6. Report income changes during the year, because savings are reconciled on your tax return.

Children can stay on a parent's plan until age 26, which helps families with older children who arrived on their parents' green card applications.

Using benefits and your green card

Many Nigerians worry that using health savings will affect later immigration applications. That question has its own rules and has changed over time; read whether using benefits affects a green card application and take advice for your case.

Where Pryme fits

Premiums are a fixed monthly cost. If you are budgeting across US bills and support for family at home, a Personal Assistant can remind you before each payment, and nothing is paid without your approval. For newcomers starting from zero, see health insurance for new Nigerian immigrants.

Questions people ask

Can green card holders get Obamacare?

Yes. Lawful permanent residents can buy Marketplace plans and may get savings if household income is 100% to 400% of the federal poverty level.

Do I have to wait five years for Marketplace coverage?

No. The five-year wait applies to Medicaid and CHIP for most qualified non-citizens, not to buying a Marketplace plan.

Can my H-4 spouse get Marketplace subsidies in 2027?

From 1 January 2027 HealthCare.gov limits savings to green card holders, Cuban or Haitian entrants and COFA migrants. Other statuses can buy plans without savings.

When is open enrolment for 2027?

It starts 1 November; enrol by 15 December for cover from 1 January; it ends 15 January on HealthCare.gov.
