Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Starting a hair braiding business in Ontario: what to register

Business name, the hairstylist trade rules, municipal licences and the public health notice: what a braiding salon in Ontario needs before opening.

The short answer

A braiding business in Ontario usually needs four things: a business name registration ($60, valid five years) or a corporation, a check on Ontario's hairstylist trade rules (Skilled Trades Ontario lists hairstylist as a compulsory trade), any licence your city requires (Brampton charges $217 for a hair salon licence), and notice to the local board of health at least 14 days before opening under the personal service settings regulation.

Start with the business structure

Most braiders start as sole proprietors. If you trade under any name other than your own legal name, for example "Adaeze Braids Studio", Ontario requires you to register that business name in the Ontario Business Registry. Ontario lists the fee at $60 online, issued immediately, and a registration lasts five years. If you would rather incorporate, an Ontario business corporation costs $300 online. Either way, keep the registration document: city licensing offices ask for it.

A CRA business number and GST/HST registration are separate steps. Read registering a sole proprietorship in Ontario for the full order of steps.

The hairstylist trade question

Skilled Trades Ontario states that hairstylist is a compulsory trade in Ontario. To practise legally you must hold a registered training agreement (as an apprentice), a provisional certificate of qualification, or a certificate of qualification, appear on the public register and renew the certificate each year. Its trade page does not mention an exemption for braiding or natural hair.

Whether braiding alone falls within the hairstylist scope is a question to put to Skilled Trades Ontario in writing before you open, and to keep their answer on file. It matters in practice: Brampton's licence checklist for hair salons asks for a valid hairstylist licence from the College of Skilled Trades. If you plan to hire braiders, the same question applies to each of them.

Public health: the 14-day notice

Hair services are personal services under Ontario Regulation 136/18, Personal Service Settings. The Ministry of Health's guideline says the operator must give the local board of health notice at least 14 days before starting, with the setting's name and location, contact details and the list of services offered. Notice is also needed if services or locations change. Boards of health inspect personal service settings no less than once every 12 months.

Inspectors focus on infection prevention: how combs, clips and tools are cleaned and disinfected, hand washing, and records of disinfection where the regulation requires them. If you also offer services that pierce the skin, such as lash extensions with adhesives near the eye or microblading, expect stricter questions.

Municipal licences: Brampton as an example

Licensing is set by each city, so check yours. Brampton is a useful example because its personal services checklist is detailed. It asks for:

  • The online licence application and zoning approval for the full business address.
  • A certificate of insurance showing at least $2,000,000 commercial general liability cover.
  • Your articles of incorporation or business name registration.
  • A valid hairstylist licence.
  • Health department approval: Brampton tells applicants to call Health Line Peel to book an inspection.
  • The fee: $217 for Class B (hair salon, barber shop, aesthetics), from the schedule as amended in 2019. Licences expire on 31 May each year.

A home-based salon in Brampton needs extra zoning documents, including a floor plan showing the rooms used, sinks and washrooms. Brampton's home occupation rules also limit visitors and floor area; see home business licences in Brampton.

What to budget for

Government fees are the small part of opening a braiding business. The larger costs are rent, chairs, products and insurance. A first-year budget for a Brampton studio might include:

ItemCostSource or note
Business name registration$60, valid 5 yearsOntario fee page, Sep 2026
Brampton Class B personal services licence$217 a yearBrampton schedule as amended 2019; check for updates
Commercial general liability insuranceQuote from insurersBrampton requires at least $2,000,000 cover
Hairstylist certification feesAsk Skilled Trades OntarioAnnual renewal of the certificate applies
Products, chairs, sinks, sterilising equipmentYour own quotesInspectors check cleaning and disinfection

Keep every receipt from the start. Equipment and supplies are business expenses, and a clean record makes the first tax return much easier.

If you hire braiders

Many braiding studios work with a mix of staff and chair renters. The legal difference matters: employees mean payroll deductions and employer duties with the CRA, while a renter runs their own business and should have their own registrations. Write down which arrangement applies to each person, and check that every braider who works on clients meets the trade requirement Skilled Trades Ontario confirms for you.

Steps in order

  1. Settle the trade question with Skilled Trades Ontario.
  2. Check zoning for the unit or your home before signing a lease.
  3. Register the business name or incorporate.
  4. Arrange liability insurance.
  5. Give the board of health 14 days' notice and book the inspection.
  6. Apply for the city licence with all documents.
  7. Open, and keep cleaning and disinfection records from day one.

Where Pryme fits

If you buy hair extensions or products from suppliers in Nigeria, a Pryme Business Account can be opened from any country, holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, and can pay naira accounts at home. Invoicing and verifiable receipts help keep the records an accountant will ask for.

Questions people ask

Do I need a licence to braid hair in Ontario?

Skilled Trades Ontario lists hairstylist as a compulsory trade and does not mention a braiding exemption on its trade page. Ask Skilled Trades Ontario in writing whether your services fall within the trade before you open.

Can I braid hair from home in Ontario?

Often yes, subject to your city's zoning and licensing rules and the public health notice. Brampton, for example, asks home-based personal services applicants for a floor plan and limits home occupations.

How much is a salon licence in Brampton?

Brampton's checklist lists $217 for a Class B hair salon, barber shop or aesthetics licence, under the schedule as amended in 2019. Licences expire on 31 May each year.

Do I have to tell public health before opening?

Yes. Under O. Reg. 136/18 the operator gives the board of health notice at least 14 days before starting a personal service setting.
