Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

GTBank card declined online: common reasons and fixes

Why a GTBank card fails online: inactive card, wrong PIN, limits, foreign merchants, dollar balance, billing address and OTP problems, with fixes for each.

The short answer

A GTBank card is usually declined online because the card is not activated or has expired, funds or limits are not enough, the merchant is foreign and the card is not set up for international spending, the one-time code did not arrive, or the billing address does not match. GTBank's help centre lists inactive cards, three wrong PINs in a day, exceeding limits, insufficient funds in a dollar account and billing address mismatch among the causes.

What GTBank itself lists

GTBank's help centre gives a set of reasons card transactions fail, in October 2026. The ones relevant to online payments are:

  • "Card was not activated."
  • "Use of wrong PIN 3 consecutive times in a day."
  • "Exceeding daily ATM withdrawal limit" (and, by extension, other card limits).
  • Insufficient funds in a dollar account, for dollar cards.
  • A billing address that does not match the one on the application.

Other common causes that GTBank's page does not spell out but that apply to any Nigerian card are covered below.

Reason by reason, with the fix

The card is new, expired or blocked

A new card may need activating before it works, and GTBank lists "Card was not activated" as a cause of failed transactions; ask your branch or GTConnect how activation works for your card. An expired card will fail everywhere. A hotlisted card cannot be revived; GTBank says a deactivated Naira Mastercard cannot be unblocked. Check card status with *737*6*3#, which GTBank lists for card enquiries. If it is expired or blocked, see renewing a GTBank card.

Not enough money, or the wrong account

A naira card draws on your naira account; a dollar card on your dollar account. Remember that card charges can include a foreign currency conversion, so a naira balance that looks sufficient may fall short once converted. If paying in dollars with a dollar card, top up the dollar account.

Foreign merchant or international limit

Many failed online payments are with merchants abroad: streaming, app stores, airlines and software. Nigerian banks set separate, lower international limits on naira cards, and these limits change often. GTBank's pages we checked do not state its current naira card international limit, so check it in GTWorld or with GTConnect, and see GTBank naira card international limit. For regular foreign payments, a dollar card may suit better; see how to get a GTBank dollar card.

The one-time code did not arrive

Online card payments usually trigger an extra check, often a one-time code sent to your phone or email. If the code goes to an old number, the payment fails. Make sure your registered number is current; see changing your GTBank phone number and GTBank OTP not received.

Billing address does not match

Some merchants, especially in the US and UK, check that the billing address you enter matches what the card issuer holds. Enter the address GTBank has for you, exactly as on your account.

Magnetic stripe or terminal issues

GTBank also mentions declines on magnetic stripe terminals. This affects in-person payments rather than online ones, but it is worth knowing if the same card fails at a shop and online on the same day.

Worked example: a limit used up by subscriptions

Example only, with an invented limit. Suppose a naira card had an international limit of $100 a month. Funmi pays a $15 streaming plan on the 1st, a $20 cloud storage plan on the 3rd and a $60 software licence on the 10th: $15 + $20 + $60 = $95 used. On the 20th she tries to buy a $12 app. $95 + $12 = $107, which is over the $100 limit, so the payment is declined even though her naira balance is healthy. Only $5 remains for the month. Knowing your real limit, and which payments draw on it, explains many "random" declines.

When the merchant is in Nigeria

Declines on Nigerian websites are less often about limits and more often about the payment page itself: a timed-out session, a mistyped expiry date or security code, or a one-time code entered after it expired. Retry once, carefully. If a naira payment fails twice, pay by bank transfer instead if the merchant offers it, and check that you were not debited twice.

Enabling online use in GTWorld

Many banks now let you switch online, international or channel use on and off within the app. GTBank's apps page and help centre do not describe such a setting in the text we read in October 2026, so look in the cards section of GTWorld for card controls. If you cannot find one, ask GTConnect (+234 700 4826 66328 or +234 1 448 0000) whether your card is enabled for online and international use and what its current limits are.

What to check first

  1. Is the card active and in date? Dial *737*6*3#.
  2. Is the right account funded, allowing for conversion?
  3. Is the merchant foreign? If so, is your card enabled for international use, and what is the limit?
  4. Does the code go to your current phone number?
  5. Did you enter the billing address exactly as GTBank holds it?
  6. If you were debited but the order failed, raise a dispute; GTBank says international card errors take up to 45 days to reverse.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds dollars, pounds and euros alongside naira, each with local account details, and money stays in the currency it arrived in until you choose to Swap. See the multicurrency account for details.

Questions people ask

Why is my GTBank card declined online?

Common reasons are an inactive or expired card, insufficient funds, a foreign merchant beyond your international limit, a one-time code going to an old number, or a billing address mismatch.

Can I use my GTBank naira card for international payments?

Nigerian banks set international limits on naira cards that change often. Check your current limit in GTWorld or with GTConnect.

How do I activate my GTBank card for online transactions?

Ask your branch or GTConnect how to activate the card and to confirm it is enabled for online and international use; also check the cards section of GTWorld for settings.

I was debited but the online payment failed. What next?

Report it to GTBank. Its help centre says international card errors take up to 45 days to reverse.
