Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Can grandchildren of Nigerians claim Nigerian citizenship?

The Constitution gives citizenship by birth through a parent abroad, and through a grandparent only in Nigeria. How each case works and what to prove.

The short answer

It depends on where the grandchild was born and on the parent. Under section 25 of the Constitution, a person born outside Nigeria is a citizen by birth only if either parent is a Nigerian citizen; a grandparent counts directly only for people born in Nigeria. A grandchild born abroad whose parents are not citizens can apply for citizenship by registration, which the Ministry of Interior lists for people aged 18 or over born outside Nigeria with a citizen grandparent.

What section 25 says

Section 25(1) of the 1999 Constitution names three groups of citizens by birth:

  • (a) people born in Nigeria before independence on 1 October 1960, either of whose parents or any of whose grandparents belongs or belonged to a community indigenous to Nigeria, provided a parent or grandparent was born in Nigeria;
  • (b) people born in Nigeria after independence, either of whose parents or any of whose grandparents is a citizen of Nigeria;
  • (c) people born outside Nigeria, either of whose parents is a citizen of Nigeria.

The grandparent link appears in (a) and (b), both of which require birth in Nigeria. Paragraph (c), the one that applies to most diaspora families, mentions parents only.

The chain that most diaspora families miss

Paragraph (c) works across generations as long as each parent in the chain is a citizen. Take an example. A grandmother born in Enugu is a citizen. Her son is born in London; under (c) he is a Nigerian citizen by birth because his mother is a citizen. His daughter is then born in Toronto. Because her father is himself a citizen, she is a citizen by birth under (c) too, whatever her grandmother's position.

So the real question for a grandchild born abroad is usually whether the parent is a Nigerian citizen, not the grandparent. If the parent never applied for a Nigerian passport, that does not change the parent's citizenship by birth; it only means there is less paperwork to show it.

Grandchildren born in Nigeria

A grandchild born in Nigeria after independence is in a stronger position. Under paragraph (b), either parent or any grandparent being a citizen is enough. A child born in Lagos to two foreign parents, with one Nigerian grandparent, is therefore a citizen by birth, while the same child born in Houston would not be under (c). The place of birth decides which paragraph applies, so check the birth certificate before anything else.

Where the chain breaks

  • Neither parent is a citizen, for example because the Nigerian parent renounced Nigerian citizenship before the child was born, or the Nigerian link is only through a grandparent.
  • The Nigerian parent's own citizenship cannot be documented, so the claim cannot be proved even if it exists in law.

Registration through a grandparent

For people outside the chain, the Ministry of Interior's e-Citibiz portal lists citizenship by registration for applicants aged 18 or over, born outside Nigeria, with a grandparent who is a Nigerian citizen. The portal labels this section 26(2B). The overview does not list documents, fees or processing times, so the applicant has to start the process on the portal and follow what it asks for.

Registration has a cost that birth citizenship does not. Section 28 provides that a person who becomes a citizen by registration or naturalisation must renounce any other citizenship within five months, unless they are a citizen of that other country by birth. A grandchild who is, say, a British citizen by birth would keep that citizenship under this exception, but a grandchild who is a naturalised citizen of another country would be expected to give it up. Read that section before you apply.

What to prove, and how

CaseWhat you need to showTypical documents
Born abroad, parent a citizen (s.25(1)(c))That a parent was a Nigerian citizen when you were bornYour full birth certificate naming parents; the parent's Nigerian passport, NIN or birth certificate
Born abroad, parent a citizen born abroadEach link in the chainYour birth certificate, your parent's birth certificate naming their Nigerian parent, and that grandparent's Nigerian documents
Born abroad, grandparent onlyEligibility for registrationWhatever e-Citibiz asks for; expect birth certificates for each generation

Use the long-form birth certificate where your country issues one, because short versions often omit parents' names. For a child born abroad to a Nigerian parent, our guide to proving citizenship with one Nigerian parent covers the passport and NIN steps, and registering a child born abroad covers the birth record.

If you do not qualify or do not apply

A grandchild without Nigerian citizenship still has a route to visit. The Nigeria Visa Policy 2020 created categories for Nigerians in the diaspora who do not hold Nigerian passports, including an e-Visa and a short visit visa, as summarised by KPMG in March 2020. Our guide on visas for foreign-born children visiting Nigeria has the current position.

Where Pryme fits

Families who keep links to Nigeria across generations often keep money there too. A Pryme personal account can be opened from any country and holds naira, pounds, dollars and euros, with naira deposits held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Is my child born abroad Nigerian if only their grandparent is Nigerian?

Not by birth under section 25(1)(c), which looks only at parents. If the parent is also a citizen, for example born abroad to a Nigerian, the child is a citizen by birth through that parent.

Can I get a Nigerian passport through my grandfather?

Only if you are a citizen. If you were born abroad and neither parent is a citizen, you would first need citizenship by registration, which the Ministry of Interior lists for adults with a citizen grandparent.

Will I lose my British citizenship if I register as Nigerian?

Section 28 requires people who become Nigerian by registration to renounce other citizenship within five months, unless they hold the other citizenship by birth. Check your own position before applying.

My father never had a Nigerian passport. Am I still Nigerian?

Citizenship by birth does not depend on holding a passport. You need documents showing your father was a citizen, such as his Nigerian birth certificate, his parents' Nigerian documents or a NIN.
