Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Gifts to family in Nigeria: cash or goods from the US?

Goods only beat cash when the landed cost, after shipping, customs and delivery, is below the Nigerian shop price. How to run the sum before you buy.

The short answer

Send goods only when the item's landed cost in Nigeria (US price plus shipping, any Nigerian customs duty and clearing, and local delivery) is clearly below what the same item costs in a Nigerian shop, or when it is hard to find there. For food, toiletries and anything widely sold in Nigeria, cash in naira usually wins, because shipping is charged on weight and the family can buy exactly what it needs.

The one sum that decides it

Every cash-or-goods decision comes down to comparing two numbers:

Landed cost
US price + US sales tax + shipping (by weight, volume or barrel) + Nigerian duty and clearing charges, if any + delivery from the port or depot to the family
Local cost
What the same item, or a fair substitute, costs in a Nigerian shop or market, in naira, converted at the rate you would actually get

If landed cost is lower, or the item cannot be bought locally, goods make sense. If not, cash does the job better. Most families never write the sum down, which is why barrels of rice and tinned tomatoes still cross the Atlantic.

Where goods usually win

  • Clothes and shoes bought on sale, especially children's sizes, which are light and pack well.
  • Specific items the family has asked for by brand or size, where a local substitute would not do.
  • Items that are hard to find or of uncertain quality locally, where the value is the certainty, not the price.
  • Things you are carrying anyway within your own baggage allowance on a trip home, where the shipping cost is close to nil.

Where cash usually wins

  • Food and household staples: heavy, cheap per kilogram, and sold everywhere in Nigeria.
  • Anything bulky but low in value: shipping by weight or volume quickly exceeds the item price.
  • Electronics, unless the saving is large: duty may apply, the warranty may not be honoured locally, and the voltage or plug may differ.
  • Urgent needs: a shipment takes weeks; a transfer arrives the same day or the next.

Cash sent through a licensed money transfer operator arrives in naira: the CBN's March 2026 directive, effective 1 May 2026, requires operators to pay out in naira only. That suits gifts meant to be spent locally. If the aim is a gift that keeps its value, such as money for a child's future, agree with the family how it will be held rather than sending a lump sum to an everyday account.

Cash also respects the family's own judgement about what is needed. Prices in Nigeria have been rising fast, with food inflation at 19.59% in September 2026 according to the NBS figures reported by Voice of Nigeria, but that cuts both ways: it makes goods bought in Nigeria dearer, and it makes cash sent in a lump sum lose value if it sits unspent.

Customs and shipping: what to find out

Nigerian import duty and the rules on what can be imported are set by the Nigeria Customs Service, and the shipper's quote may or may not include clearing. Before you buy, ask the shipper in writing:

  1. Is the price per kilogram, per cubic foot or per barrel or box?
  2. Does it include customs duty and clearing in Nigeria, or are those billed separately on arrival?
  3. Is delivery to the family's address included, or must they collect from a depot, and where?
  4. Which items does the shipper refuse, and is there insurance for loss?
  5. How long is the usual transit time to Lagos, and to other cities?

Our guide to shipping barrels and boxes to Nigeria from Houston covers the shipping options, and excess baggage costs compares carrying items yourself.

A worked comparison

Example only, using an illustrative rate of ₦1,500 to $1 (not today's rate) and illustrative shipping prices.

ItemUS priceShipping and charges (example)Landed costLocal price (example)Better as
Children's clothes, 3 kg$90$30$120 (₦180,000)₦240,000Goods
Rice, 25 kg$35$90$125 (₦187,500)₦75,000Cash
Laptop$600$60 plus possible duty$660+₦1,050,000 ($700)Close; check warranty
Toiletries, 5 kg$60$45$105 (₦157,500)₦100,000Cash

The rice line is the familiar mistake: shipping costs more than the rice. The laptop is too close to call until you know whether duty applies and whether the warranty is valid in Nigeria.

The US tax side

Gifts of goods count as gifts just like cash. The IRS gift tax FAQ (July 2026) puts the 2026 annual exclusion at $19,000 per recipient; give more than that to one person in a year and you generally file Form 709, though tax is rarely due. See gift tax rules for large sums sent to Nigeria. This is information, not tax advice.

Where Pryme fits

When cash is the better gift, Send delivers naira to a family member's Nigerian account, and the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. A remittance company in the US must also show you the fee, rate and amount received before you pay, so you can compare.

Questions people ask

Is it cheaper to send foodstuff or money to Nigeria?

Usually money. Food is heavy and widely sold in Nigeria, so shipping often costs more than the food itself. Run the landed-cost sum before you buy.

Do I pay customs duty on gifts shipped to Nigeria?

Duty is set by the Nigeria Customs Service and depends on the goods. Ask your shipper in writing whether its price includes duty and clearing or whether the family will be billed on arrival.

Is it worth sending a laptop or phone to Nigeria?

Only if the saving is large after shipping and any duty, and the warranty works in Nigeria. Otherwise buying locally is simpler.

Do gifts of goods count for US gift tax?

Yes. Gifts of property count towards the $19,000 annual exclusion per recipient for 2026, the same as cash.
