Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Gift to a US resident from Nigerian parents over $100,000

A US resident receiving over $100,000 from Nigerian parents in a year files Form 3520. No US tax is due on the gift, and the parents file nothing.

The short answer

If you are a US citizen or resident and receive more than US$100,000 in gifts in one tax year from your parents in Nigeria, you report it on Form 3520, Part IV, with gifts from both parents added together. It is an information return: there is no US tax on the gift, but the late-filing penalty is 5% of the gift per month up to 25%. Your parents, as nonresident non-citizens, are subject to US gift tax only on US real and tangible property, so a transfer from their Nigerian account does not require a US return from them.

Your side: Form 3520

The IRS's Gifts from foreign person page (April 2026) and the Form 3520 instructions (December 2025) set the rule. A US person files Part IV if, during the tax year, they received more than US$100,000 from a nonresident alien individual or foreign estate that they treat as gifts or bequests. Key points for a gift from parents:

  • Mum and Dad count together. Gifts from related foreign persons are aggregated, so US$60,000 from your father and US$50,000 from your mother in the same year is US$110,000 for the test.
  • Each gift over US$5,000 is identified separately once you are over the threshold, according to the IRS page.
  • It is not a tax return. The IRS says foreign gifts are not subject to income tax.
  • Deadline: the 15th day of the fourth month after year end, normally 15 April; 15 June if you live abroad; 15 October if your income tax return is extended.
  • Penalty: 5% of the gift for each month late, up to 25%, unless you show reasonable cause.

If the money comes from your parents' Nigerian company rather than from them personally, a different and much lower threshold applies: the IRS page gives US$20,573 for 2026 for gifts from foreign corporations or partnerships. Paying through the family business can therefore trigger the form at a far smaller amount.

Your parents' side

The Form 709 instructions (2025) say nonresident non-citizens are subject to US gift tax only on gifts of US real property and tangible property in the US, reported on Form 709-NA. A wire from a Nigerian bank account to your US account is not on the face of it a gift of US real or tangible property. If your parents instead give you a house they own in Texas, or cash or valuables physically in the US, the answer can change; take advice.

In Nigeria, the NiDCOM-hosted diaspora guide (January 2026) lists gifts to relatives among items not taxed. If your parents give you an asset instead of cash, such as shares or land, a Bloomberg Tax analysis of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 (February 2026) says a gift is treated as a disposal at market value, so they may face Nigerian capital gains tax on the gain.

Gift, loan or something else?

The label matters. A gift goes on Form 3520 and has no US tax. A loan does not go on Form 3520 as a gift, but interest and repayment terms matter. Money your parents send for you to invest for them is not a gift at all; it is still their money, and the account it sits in may have its own reporting. Put the intention in writing at the time: a short signed letter from your parents stating that the transfer is an outright gift with no expectation of repayment is useful evidence for both the IRS and your US bank.

A worked example

Example only; exchange rates invented. Ese, a nurse in Maryland, receives help from her parents in Benin City towards a house deposit in 2026.

DateFromNairaUS$ (example rate)
March 2026Father₦90,000,000US$60,000 at ₦1,500
September 2026Mother₦80,000,000US$50,000 at ₦1,600
Total for the yearBoth parents (related)₦170,000,000US$110,000

Check: 90,000,000 ÷ 1,500 = 60,000; 80,000,000 ÷ 1,600 = 50,000; 60,000 + 50,000 = 110,000. The total is over US$100,000, so Ese files Form 3520 Part IV by 15 April 2027, listing both gifts. She pays no US tax on them. Interest the money earns once it is hers is her taxable income.

What to check first

  1. Add every gift from both parents and other related family members in the tax year.
  2. Check whether any payment came from a company rather than a person.
  3. Keep a gift letter, bank records and the dollar value on each date.
  4. Diary 15 April (or 15 October with an extension).
  5. If the money passes through a Nigerian account in your name, check the FBAR test (FBAR for Nigerian accounts).

For gifts in the other direction, from you to family at home, see gifts to parents in Nigeria; for the form in general, Form 3520 for gifts from family.

Where Pryme fits

A large family gift is easier to explain when each transfer arrives with a clear payer name and date. A Pryme account can receive naira and hold it alongside US dollars, with conversion only when you choose and the rate shown before you approve (multicurrency account). Statements can be made verifiable through VerifyDoc.ai (receipts and statements), useful if your US bank or the IRS asks where the money came from.

Questions people ask

Do I pay US tax on money my parents in Nigeria give me?

No. Gifts from foreign persons are not subject to US income tax, but over US$100,000 in a year you must report them on Form 3520.

Do gifts from my mother and father count separately?

No. Gifts from related foreign persons are added together for the US$100,000 test.

Do my parents need to file anything with the IRS?

Not for cash sent from Nigeria. Nonresident non-citizens are subject to US gift tax only on US real and tangible property.

What if the money comes from my parents' company?

Gifts from foreign corporations have a much lower threshold, US$20,573 for 2026 according to the IRS.
