Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Where Nigeria's dollars come from: FX inflow sources

Nigeria earns dollars from oil, other exports, remittances, portfolio money and FDI. Here is what each source is, what the data show and where to check it.

The short answer

Nigeria's dollars come mainly from crude oil and gas exports, non-oil exports, diaspora remittances, foreign portfolio investment and, to a much smaller extent, foreign direct investment, plus government borrowing abroad. Of the sourced 2026 figures, capital importation was $10.37 billion in Q1 2026, of which portfolio money was 95.1% and FDI just 1.3%; current shares for oil and remittances are published by the CBN and should be checked there.

The five main channels

SourceWhat it isHow durable
Crude oil and gas exportsSales of crude, gas and condensate, partly through NNPCDepends on price and output
Non-oil exportsAgriculture, solid minerals, manufactures, servicesSteady but small
Diaspora remittancesMoney Nigerians abroad send home through IMTOs and banksSteady, seasonal
Foreign portfolio investmentPurchases of T-bills, bonds and sharesCan reverse quickly
Foreign direct investmentBuilding or buying businessesLong-term

Government borrowing abroad, such as Eurobonds and World Bank credits, also brings in dollars, but it is a liability that must be repaid. See external debt explained.

What the 2026 figures show

Capital importation

NBS data reported in June 2026 show capital importation of $10.37 billion in Q1 2026: $9.86 billion portfolio (95.1%), $374.48 million other investment and $135.08 million FDI (1.3%). That mix means most of the capital flowing in was mobile money chasing yields, not long-term investment. Details in foreign portfolio inflows.

Oil

We could not open a current official figure for oil's share of FX inflows, so we do not quote one. What we can source: the 2026 budget assumes 1.84 million barrels a day and $64.85 a barrel, while actual output was 1.678 million barrels a day in August 2026. Lower output means fewer dollars, whatever the price. See how oil moves the naira.

Remittances

The CBN has pushed remittances into official channels: IMTOs must pay recipients in naira, and from 1 May 2026 all proceeds must pass through naira settlement accounts at authorised dealer banks. That makes the dollars visible to the official market. See remittances and the naira.

Where the dollars end up

Inflows that are sold into the NFEM supply the market directly; those that go to the government or CBN add to reserves, which stood at $54.61 billion on 14 September 2026 according to CBN data reported by Nairametrics. The CBN can then sell from reserves to steady the rate.

A worked example: durable versus mobile dollars

Example with round numbers: suppose a quarter brings $10 billion, of which $9.5 billion is portfolio and $0.5 billion FDI and other. If half the portfolio money leaves the next quarter, $4.75 billion of demand appears, nearly ten times the durable inflow. That is the risk of a mix dominated by portfolio flows, as Q1 2026's was.

Why the mix matters more than the total

Two quarters with the same total inflow can leave the naira in very different shape. A quarter led by oil sales and remittances brings dollars that are spent or converted and do not need to be returned. A quarter led by portfolio money brings dollars that will, sooner or later, want to leave again, with their returns. Analysts therefore watch the share of durable inflows as closely as the headline. When FDI is small, as it was in Q1 2026, the naira leans more heavily on oil revenue, remittances and the willingness of portfolio investors to stay.

Where Pryme fits

For households, the practical response to an uneven inflow mix is to match currencies to commitments. A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each; see multicurrency accounts.

What to check first

  • CBN monthly economic reports for the breakdown of inflows by source.
  • NBS quarterly capital importation and foreign trade reports.
  • The NFEM rate and reserves, covered in our NFEM explainer.

Questions people ask

Where does Nigeria get its dollars?

From oil and gas exports, non-oil exports, diaspora remittances, portfolio investment, FDI and foreign borrowing.

What share of Nigeria's capital inflows is FDI?

In Q1 2026, FDI was $135.08 million, 1.3% of $10.37 billion capital importation, per NBS data.

How much are Nigeria's foreign reserves?

$54.61 billion on 14 September 2026, per CBN data reported by Nairametrics. Check the CBN for today's figure.

Do remittances count as FX inflow?

Yes. CBN rules require IMTO proceeds to pass through naira settlement accounts at authorised dealer banks.
