Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Gross vs net reserves: why the two figures differ

Nigeria had $45.71bn gross but $34.80bn net reserves at end-2025. What each figure counts, why they differ and which one to watch.

The short answer

Gross reserves are all the foreign assets the CBN reports holding; net reserves subtract the parts already committed to others, such as short-term obligations. At the end of 2025 the CBN put gross reserves at $45.71 billion and net reserves at $34.80 billion, a gap of $10.91 billion.

Two numbers, two questions

The gross figure answers "how much foreign currency does the CBN hold?" The net figure answers "how much of it is free to use?" Both are correct; they measure different things. Headlines usually quote gross reserves because the CBN publishes them often. Net reserves appear less frequently, for example in CBN statements on its annual position.

What gross reserves include

Gross reserves typically cover foreign currency deposits and securities, gold, the IMF reserve position and Special Drawing Rights. They can rise even when the CBN's own position does not improve: for example, if dollars are borrowed or received under a swap, they add to gross reserves while also creating an obligation to pay back.

What net reserves take out

Net reserves deduct claims against those assets, such as FX swaps and forwards the CBN must settle, and other short-term liabilities in foreign currency. Definitions vary between central banks and analysts, and the published news reports we checked did not set out the CBN's exact deductions, so treat the net figure as the CBN's own measure.

The figures

End ofGrossNetGap
2023$33.22bn$3.99bn$29.23bn
2024$40.19bn$23.11bn$17.08bn
2025$45.71bn$34.80bn$10.91bn

Gross and net figures from the CBN as reported by Voice of Nigeria (3 Mar 2026) and Premium Times via AllAfrica (2 Mar 2026); the gap column is our subtraction. Net reserves rose by $11.69 billion in 2025, about 50.6%.

The trend matters more than any one year: the gap shrank from about $29 billion to about $11 billion in two years, meaning a much larger share of the headline is unencumbered. Cardoso described the change as a strengthening in both "the level and quality" of reserves.

The latest gross figures

  • $50.45 billion on 16 February 2026, the highest in 13 years (Channels TV, 24 Feb 2026).
  • $54.61 billion on 14 September 2026 (Nairametrics, 8 Oct 2026, citing CBN data).

No net figure for 2026 was available in the sources we checked. Check the CBN's reserves page for the latest gross figure and its statements for any net update.

Why the gap shrank

The CBN's statement linked the rise in reserves to "stronger external sector fundamentals and sustained policy reforms" (Premium Times via AllAfrica). Over the same period it cleared the FX backlog of valid claims, as explained in the FX backlog explained, and the MPC cited a healthy current account surplus (Channels TV, 24 Feb 2026). A smaller gap means fewer of the headline dollars are already promised to someone else.

Which figure to watch

  • For confidence in the naira, net reserves are the better guide to what the CBN can actually deploy.
  • For month-to-month movement, gross reserves are published far more often.
  • For adequacy, compare reserves with imports: see months of import cover.

Related: how the CBN intervenes and how the official rate is set.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between gross and net reserves?

Gross reserves are everything the CBN holds; net reserves subtract amounts already owed or committed, such as swaps and short-term foreign liabilities.

What are Nigeria's net reserves?

$34.80 billion at the end of 2025, up from $23.11 billion a year earlier, according to the CBN.

What are Nigeria's external reserves now?

Gross reserves were $54.61 billion on 14 September 2026, per CBN data reported by Nairametrics. Check the CBN website for the latest.

Why were net reserves so low in 2023?

At the end of 2023 the CBN reported net reserves of $3.99 billion against $33.22 billion gross, meaning most of the headline was committed to obligations.
