Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Burying a Nigerian abroad instead of at home: the costs

What a burial or cremation abroad costs compared with repatriating a body to Nigeria, which documents each needs, and who makes the decision.

The short answer

In the UK, SunLife's 2026 Cost of Dying report puts an average simple attended burial at £4,758 and a cremation at £3,518, with direct cremation averaging £1,628. Repatriation to Nigeria adds a separate layer: one UK funeral director listed £2,655 for core repatriation services in November 2023 before the coffin, air freight and consular fees, and the family still pays for a funeral in Nigeria. The decision usually rests with the person entitled to arrange the funeral, guided by the deceased's wishes.

Many Nigerian families assume a loved one who dies abroad will be flown home. More are now choosing burial or cremation where they lived, because children and grandchildren are there, because of cost, or because the paperwork for repatriation can take weeks. Neither is the wrong choice. This guide sets the costs side by side so the family can decide with the numbers in front of them.

Option 1: funeral abroad

Using the UK as the example, SunLife's Cost of Dying report 2026 (based on 2025 costs) gives these averages:

Item (UK average, SunLife 2026)Cost
Simple attended burial£4,758
Simple attended cremation£3,518
Traditional burial£5,440
Traditional cremation£4,200
Direct cremation (no attended service)£1,628
Burial plot, UK average£2,374
Burial plot, London average£4,863
Send-off costs (wake, flowers, etc.), average£1,312

Prices in other countries differ; ask at least two funeral directors for an itemised quote. Burial abroad can be more expensive than cremation largely because of the plot, especially in cities.

Option 2: repatriation to Nigeria

Repatriation has three cost layers: the funeral director abroad, the flight, and the funeral in Nigeria.

ItemCost (as published)Source
Core repatriation services (collection, crating, airport transfer, embalming, professional services, care)£2,655Funeral Partners, Nov 2023
Zinc lining£350 (£400 with glass panel)Funeral Partners, Nov 2023
Coffin, air freight, consular and certificate feesCharged separately as disbursementsFuneral Partners, Nov 2023
Nigeria High Commission Ottawa, documents for burial transit permitCAD 50 per document plus CAD 50 adminHigh Commission Ottawa
Port Health waiver (Nigeria)₦5,000High Commission Ottawa
Consulate in Atlanta, shipping human remains$50 money orderConsulate Atlanta, page dated Oct 2026

Air freight is usually the largest unknown, so get a written quote that includes it. Funeral Partners says full payment is required before repatriation. Then add the funeral in Nigeria: mortuary fees on arrival, transport to the hometown, the burial itself and the gathering, which for many families is the biggest cost of all. Our guide to sharing funeral costs in Nigeria among siblings covers that side.

A worked comparison

Example only, using the published figures above and leaving out air freight, coffin and the Nigerian ceremony, which vary too much to estimate: a UK simple attended cremation is £3,518. Core repatriation services plus a zinc-lined coffin lining are £2,655 + £350 = £3,005, before the flight and before the family spends anything in Nigeria. In practice, repatriation almost always costs more in total, because it adds a second funeral.

Documents and time

A funeral abroad needs the local death registration and the usual permissions for burial or cremation. Repatriation needs much more. The Atlanta consulate, for example, lists the death certificate, a burial transit permit, a letter stating death was not from a communicable disease, a notarised embalmer's affidavit, a funeral home letter confirming a hermetically sealed coffin, the deceased's Nigerian passport, and a waiver from the Federal Ministry of Health's Port Health Services. Collecting these takes time, especially where a coroner is involved. For the full sequence see repatriating a body to Nigeria.

There is also a middle path: cremation abroad and taking the ashes home. Simplicity, a UK funeral provider, notes that ashes need the death certificate and cremation certificate, travel in a non-metal container, and cannot be sent by normal post.

Questions to settle as a family

  1. Did the deceased leave written wishes, in a will or elsewhere?
  2. Where will the surviving spouse and children live, and where will they want to visit a grave?
  3. Is there an expectation in the hometown, and who will speak for the family there?
  4. What can the family actually afford, counting both countries?
  5. Is there time to gather repatriation documents, or is a coroner's inquiry likely to delay everything?

Who decides

The deceased's wishes, if written down, carry the most weight in practice, and a will is the clearest place for them. Who has the legal right to make the final decision depends on the law where the death occurred: in many countries it is the executor or the nearest relative, and disputes between a spouse abroad and family in Nigeria do happen. Talk about it early, and record the decision in your own will. See one will or two, in Nigeria and abroad.

Paying for it

  • Check for life cover or a funeral plan. MoneyHelper says UK funeral plans usually exclude the burial plot and burial or cremation fees, and its guidance does not cover death abroad or repatriation, so check the plan terms; see funeral plans and repatriation to Nigeria.
  • Ask the funeral director for an itemised quote and which items must be paid up front.
  • If siblings and community associations are contributing, collect into one account and keep a list of who gave what.

Where Pryme fits

When contributions come from relatives in several countries, a Pryme account can receive pounds, dollars, euros and naira into one place, and Send pays costs in Nigeria; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Is it cheaper to bury a Nigerian abroad or at home?

Usually abroad. Repatriation adds funeral director, air freight and consular costs, and the family still pays for a funeral in Nigeria.

How much is a cremation in the UK?

SunLife's 2026 report puts an average simple attended cremation at £3,518 and direct cremation at £1,628.

Can we cremate abroad and take the ashes to Nigeria?

Yes. You need the death and cremation certificates, a non-metal container, and you cannot post the ashes by normal mail in the UK.

Who decides whether to bury abroad or in Nigeria?

The deceased's written wishes help most. The legal decision-maker depends on local law, often the executor or nearest relative.
