Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Funding dollar savings from naira: the rate and fees

When you fund dollar savings with naira, the exchange rate usually costs more than the fee. How apps and banks price it, and how to compare.

The short answer

When you fund dollar savings with naira, the provider converts at its own rate, and the gap between that rate and the market rate is usually a bigger cost than any listed fee. Compare offers by the number of dollars you end up with, not by the fee line, and check the rate the provider will use when you convert back.

Two costs hide in every naira-to-dollar top-up

Most Nigerians who save in dollars start with naira. The moment naira becomes dollars, two things can cost you: the exchange rate the provider applies, and any fee it lists separately. Many apps show no fee at all, which can make a conversion look free when the rate itself carries the provider's margin.

The official market reference is the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) rate the CBN publishes, which moves through the day. Providers price around it: a bank, a savings app or a fund manager will quote you a rate that is usually a little worse than the interbank price, because that spread is how it covers costs and earns money. The rate also changes, so a quote is only good for the moment it is shown. We do not print a daily rate here; check the CBN's published NFEM figure, or the rate your provider shows before you confirm.

How providers in Nigeria describe their conversion

Each provider states its pricing differently, and some say very little. What their own pages said in October 2026:

ProviderHow naira becomes dollarsWhat the page says about the rate or fee
PiggyVest Flex DollarFund from Flex Naira or a naira debit card (minimum $1), or send dollars to a USD virtual accountNaira withdrawals are paid at a "stated parallel market buy rate"; USD virtual account deposits carry 0.3% (minimum $5, maximum $25)
Cowrywise dollar fundsNaira deposits only; naira is converted to dollarsRate "determined by the current market performance"; method not published
RisevestFund in naira or by USD cardReported in 2023 to use a separate, higher "sell rate" when you withdraw to naira
RaenestConvert within the appFrom 6 Jan 2026: conversion 0.7%, capped at $2.70 for Nigeria
Bank domiciliary accountBuy dollars from your bank where it sells them, or receive dollars directlyBank quotes on the day; ask for the rate in writing

None of these figures is a promise for tomorrow. Fees are revised, and rates are set at the time you convert. Read the line in the app just before you approve.

Worked example: the fee that is not the cost

Example only, with made-up rates. You want to move ₦1,000,000 into dollars and see two offers.

  • Offer A: rate ₦1,480 per $1, "no fee". You get ₦1,000,000 ÷ 1,480 = $675.68.
  • Offer B: rate ₦1,450 per $1, fee of 1% (₦10,000) taken first. You get ₦990,000 ÷ 1,450 = $682.76.

The offer with a visible fee gives you $7.08 more, because its rate is better. That is why the only fair comparison is the final dollar figure for the same naira amount.

Now the round trip. Suppose you later convert Offer A's $675.68 back at an example sell rate of ₦1,420. You receive $675.68 × 1,420 = ₦959,465.60, about ₦40,534 (4.05%) less than you started with, even though the market did not move against you in this example. The gap between a provider's buy and sell rates is a cost you pay twice: once going in, once coming out.

Other charges to count

  • Stamp duty on transfers: from 1 January 2026 a ₦50 stamp duty applies to electronic transfers of ₦10,000 or more and is charged to the sender, with exemptions such as transfers below ₦10,000 and salary payments (Kuda's help centre describes the change under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025).
  • Card funding: some apps let you fund with a naira card; check whether a processing charge is added.
  • Fund fees: if the dollars go into a mutual fund, the management fee comes on top of the conversion. The Stanbic IBTC Dollar Fund page lists a 1.5% management fee and a 3.5% expense ratio, for example.
  • Exit penalties: some dollar funds charge part of your income if you redeem early, which matters if you may need the money soon.

What to check first

  1. Ask for the exact rate and the exact number of dollars before you approve, not a rate range.
  2. Find out which rate is used when you convert back, and whether withdrawals can go out as dollars to your own domiciliary account.
  3. Look for fees on a separate line: deposit, conversion, card and withdrawal.
  4. Compare at least two providers on the same naira amount at the same time of day.
  5. Check the provider's licence: dollar investments should sit with an SEC-registered manager, and deposits with a CBN-licensed bank.

If you are still deciding whether dollar savings suit you at all, our guide to saving in dollars in Nigeria covers the basics, and withdrawing from dollar savings apps covers the exit side.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds NGN and USD side by side, with local account details for each. When you use Swap to move naira into dollars, the rate is shown first, any fee sits on its own line, and nothing converts until you approve. Dollars you receive stay as dollars until you choose to swap them. See how the multicurrency account works.

Questions people ask

What rate do savings apps use to convert naira to dollars?

Each app sets its own rate around the market price. PiggyVest says naira withdrawals from Flex Dollar use a stated parallel market buy rate, and Cowrywise says its rate follows current market performance. Check the rate shown in the app before you confirm.

Is it cheaper to fund dollar savings with naira or with dollars?

If you already have dollars, sending them directly avoids a naira conversion, though some apps charge a deposit fee on dollar transfers, such as PiggyVest's 0.3% (minimum $5) on its USD virtual account. If you start with naira, the conversion rate is the main cost.

Why do I get fewer naira when I convert my dollar savings back?

Providers usually buy dollars from you at a lower rate than they sell them, so a round trip costs the spread even if the market has not moved.

Do I pay stamp duty when funding a dollar savings app?

From 1 January 2026, a ₦50 stamp duty applies to electronic transfers of ₦10,000 or more and is charged to the sender, with listed exemptions. Your bank or app shows it on the transfer.
