Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Freelancing for Nigerian clients on a Graduate visa

The Graduate visa allows self-employment, so you can freelance for Nigerian clients. The limits, the visa length and the tax steps that follow.

The short answer

Yes, you can freelance for Nigerian clients on a Graduate visa: GOV.UK says Graduate visa holders can work in most jobs, look for work and be self-employed, but cannot work as a professional sportsperson, claim most benefits, or extend the visa. The visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027 (3 years for PhD graduates), so plan your next visa while you build the business.

Many Nigerian graduates of UK universities already do freelance work for clients at home: design for Lagos startups, data work for Abuja consultancies, content for Nigerian brands. On a Student visa that work was restricted; on the Graduate visa, self-employment is allowed. The constraint now is time.

What the Graduate visa allows

You canYou cannot
Work in most jobsWork as a professional sportsperson
Be self-employedClaim most benefits or the State Pension
Look for workExtend the Graduate visa
Do unpaid voluntary work for a charity, voluntary or statutory body
Travel abroad and return

That is GOV.UK's list as at October 2026. The page is silent on company directorships, so if you want to set up a limited company rather than trade as a sole trader, check with an immigration adviser first.

How long you have

GOV.UK says a Graduate visa granted on an application made on or before 31 December 2026 lasts 2 years; applications from 1 January 2027 get 18 months; PhD graduates get 3 years. It cannot be extended, but you may be able to switch to another visa, such as Skilled Worker. Self-employment on its own does not lead to settlement on this route, so treat the Graduate period as a runway: build clients, keep records, and decide early which visa comes next.

Setting up

  1. Register as self-employed. GOV.UK says you can start trading before you register and must register for Self Assessment if you earn more than £1,000 in a tax year (6 April to 5 April).
  2. Get your UTR. HMRC sends a 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference; Nigerian clients may ask for it.
  3. Keep records from day one. Every invoice, receipt and expense, with the sterling value of naira payments.
  4. Write simple contracts. Scope, fee, currency, deposit and payment date. See contractor agreements with Nigerian clients.

Worked example

Example only. Ifeoma graduates in September 2026 and is granted a Graduate visa on an application made in October 2026, so it runs for 2 years. She designs for four Nigerian clients at ₦450,000 a month in total, and does some UK work. In her first tax year her gross self-employment income passes £1,000, so she registers for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year ends. She also applies for UK roles that could sponsor her under Skilled Worker before the visa expires.

Things that trip graduates up

  • Assuming Student visa work limits still apply; they do not on the Graduate visa, but check your visa start date before taking on work.
  • Being paid into a parent's account in Nigeria; keep business income in an account in your name so your records match.
  • Forgetting Nigerian withholding tax on fees from Nigerian companies (how WHT works on a UK invoice).
  • Leaving the next visa until the last months.

Tax

As a UK resident you pay UK income tax on your freelance profit wherever the client is. GOV.UK's foreign income pages explain how to report foreign income and claim relief for foreign tax already paid. The £1,000 trading allowance can cover very small amounts of gross income; above that, you register and file.

Planning the next visa

Because the Graduate visa cannot be extended, the freelance business has to sit alongside a plan for what comes next. Two common routes are open to graduates who want to stay:

  • Skilled Worker. A job with a licensed sponsor. Freelancing for Nigerian clients on the side may then be restricted by the conditions of that visa, so check before you rely on it.
  • Innovator Founder. For people setting up their own business. GOV.UK says the idea must be new, innovative, viable and scalable, and the business must be endorsed by an approved endorsing body. A freelance service business for Nigerian clients will not usually meet the "different from anything on the market" test on its own; a product with a real innovation might.

Whichever route you aim for, the records you keep now matter: contracts, invoices, accounts and filed returns show what the business is and what it earns. Start a separate account for business income in your own name from the first client.

Travel to Nigeria during the visa

GOV.UK lists travel abroad and return among what you can do on a Graduate visa. Time spent working from Lagos for a client does not end the visa, but long stays can affect your UK tax residence, so keep a log of the days you are away.

Where Pryme fits

Nigerian clients find it easiest to pay in naira by local transfer. A Pryme Business Account opened from the UK gives you a Nigerian account number for naira and UK details for sterling, with money kept in the currency it arrived in until you Swap. Invoices and statements give you the record HMRC and a future visa application may want. Compare the Student visa rules.

Questions people ask

Can I be self-employed on a Graduate visa?

Yes. GOV.UK lists self-employment among what Graduate visa holders can do.

How long is the Graduate visa?

Two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for PhD graduates, per GOV.UK.

Can I extend my Graduate visa?

No. You may be able to switch to another visa, such as Skilled Worker.

Do I pay UK tax on money from Nigerian clients?

Yes, as a UK resident. Register for Self Assessment once self-employment income passes £1,000 in a tax year.
