Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bank fraud by state in Nigeria: what NIBSS data shows

Which Nigerian states report the most bank fraud: NIBSS counts and losses for Lagos, FCT, Rivers, Ogun and Kaduna, 2022 and 2023.

The short answer

Lagos accounts for about half of all reported bank fraud in Nigeria: 46,224 cases and ₦8.7 billion of losses in 2023, or 48% of the count and 49% of the value, according to the NIBSS Annual Fraud Landscape. The FCT, Rivers, Ogun and Kaduna follow by number of cases.

Top five states by reported fraud, 2022 and 2023 (as of October 2026)

NIBSS publishes the location of fraud cases reported by banks and other institutions. Its 2023 Annual Fraud Landscape, the most recent edition whose state figures we could verify, named the five states with the most cases.

StateCases 2023Cases 2022Losses 2023Losses 2022Change in losses
Lagos46,22445,952₦8.7 billion₦9.9 billion−12%
FCT (Abuja)4,5484,574₦994 million₦574 million+73%
Rivers3,2853,785₦433 million₦319 million+36% (our calculation)
Ogun2,8673,410not statednot statedn/a
Kaduna2,7662,893not statednot statedn/a

Lagos dominates, but less in value than you might think

Lagos had 48% of all reported fraud cases and 49% of the money lost in 2023. Together the five states above account for 59,690 of the cases, about 62% of the 95,620 total cases NIBSS recorded (our calculation using the total reported by Techpoint Africa). The concentration continued into 2024: in the first quarter, Lagos accounted for more than 60% of fraud attempts, according to NIBSS quarterly data reported by TechCabal.

The pattern largely reflects where payments happen. Lagos has the largest share of bank accounts, card terminals and businesses, so it also has the most fraud. A high count does not mean a Lagos resident is more likely to be defrauded than someone elsewhere; NIBSS does not publish fraud per account or per person by state, so a fair per-head ranking cannot be built from its figures.

Losses moved in different directions

Even though Lagos case numbers rose slightly in 2023, its losses fell 12%, from ₦9.9 billion to ₦8.7 billion. The FCT went the other way: the number of cases was almost unchanged but losses rose 73%, from ₦574 million to ₦994 million, meaning each case cost more on average. Rivers had about 500 fewer cases but higher losses. Ogun and Kaduna saw fewer cases; their loss values were not stated in the coverage we could verify.

StateAverage loss per reported case, 2023 (our calculation)Average loss per reported case, 2022 (our calculation)
Lagosabout ₦188,000about ₦215,000
FCT (Abuja)about ₦219,000about ₦125,000
Riversabout ₦132,000about ₦84,000

These averages divide total losses by the number of cases. They are rough, because a few very large frauds can lift an average a great deal, and not every reported case results in a loss.

Why state data needs care

  • Location is where the case was recorded, usually the branch or the customer's registered address, not necessarily where the fraudster was. The 2024 report described accounts operated from abroad.
  • Reporting depends on institutions. NIBSS found that only 37% of institutions reported fraud incidents through its portal in the period Techpoint analysed; those that did not may be concentrated in some states.
  • The 2023 state figures predate the record 2024 losses, which were driven by a single ₦30 billion internal case. That case's location was not published.
  • Only the top five states were named in the coverage we could verify. We have not listed other states because we could not confirm their figures.

Reading the data outside Lagos

Outside the top five, state figures were not itemised in the coverage we could verify, so the share of fraud in the remaining 32 states can only be estimated as a residual. Using the national total of 95,620 cases, about 35,900 cases (roughly 38%) were recorded outside the five named states (our calculation). That is a large number spread across most of the country, and it means fraud is not only a big-city problem even if it is concentrated there.

The FCT and Rivers figures also show that a state with far fewer cases than Lagos can still see larger losses per case. For a business owner, the useful lesson is about methods rather than location: the same social engineering calls, fake alerts and card tricks are used everywhere, and the controls that work in Lagos work in Kano or Enugu. For journalists and researchers, the safest way to quote state data is as a share of reported cases or losses, with the year, rather than as a ranking of the "most fraudulent" state.

If you need to compare states fairly, you would need a denominator such as the number of active bank accounts or payment transactions in each state. NIBSS and the CBN do not publish fraud alongside such a denominator in the sources we could check, so any per-head ranking you see elsewhere is likely to be an estimate built from other data.

How we put this together

State counts and losses are from the NIBSS Annual Fraud Landscape for 2023, as reported by 21st Century Chronicle on 30 April 2024; we could not open the NIBSS document itself. The national case total (95,620) is from Techpoint Africa's July 2024 summary of NIBSS data. The first-quarter 2024 Lagos share is from TechCabal (May 2024). Percentage changes and averages marked as our calculation were worked out from the published figures and rounded.

Where Pryme fits

Fraud in every state tends to start with someone obtaining a one-time code or PIN. Pryme accounts use an authenticator app rather than SMS codes, plus a transaction PIN; see how Pryme security works. For common tactics, read money scams in Lagos and fraud techniques and channels data, and for national totals see fraud losses by year.

Questions people ask

Which state has the highest bank fraud in Nigeria?

Lagos, by a wide margin. NIBSS recorded 46,224 cases and ₦8.7 billion of losses there in 2023, about half of the national totals.

How much fraud is there in Abuja?

The FCT recorded 4,548 fraud cases in 2023 with losses of ₦994 million, up 73% from ₦574 million in 2022.

Is Lagos more dangerous for bank fraud per person?

The data cannot say. NIBSS publishes totals by state, not fraud per account or per resident, and Lagos has far more accounts and payments than other states.

Does NIBSS publish fraud figures for every state?

The coverage we could verify named only the top five states. Figures for other states may exist in the full report but we could not confirm them.
