Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Using a foreign bank card in Nigeria: fees and acceptance

Where foreign Visa and Mastercard cards work in Nigeria, the CBN's 2025 directive, merchant set-ups, and the fees your own bank adds.

The short answer

Foreign Visa and Mastercard cards are accepted at many Nigerian hotels and online checkouts, and a CBN circular reported in December 2025 directs banks and acquirers to enable international cards on ATMs, POS and online platforms, with the rate and charges shown first. The main costs come from your own bank, such as Barclays' 2.99% non-sterling fee, and from choosing to be charged in your home currency.

What the CBN has directed

Radio Nigeria Lagos reported on 22 December 2025 that a CBN circular, signed by the director of financial policy and regulation, directs banks and non-bank acquirers to enable ATMs, POS terminals and virtual payment platforms for international cards. The report lists three practical points:

  • Foreign card transactions above US$200 a day, US$500 a week or US$1,000 a month (or naira equivalents) require multi-factor authentication.
  • ATM cash withdrawals must stay within approved withdrawal limits.
  • The exchange rate, based on the official market, and all charges must be disclosed before the transaction completes.

The aim, as reported, is fewer false declines for legitimate international card users. It does not mean every terminal will take every card on the day you arrive.

Where foreign cards tend to work

Online checkouts

Nigeria's large payment gateways accept international cards. Paystack's pricing page says international cards are accepted and "charged and settled in Naira by default", with an international card fee to the merchant of 3.9% + ₦100. That is a merchant cost, but some merchants pass them on or prefer local payment methods because of them.

POS terminals

Acceptance at the counter depends on how the merchant's terminal is set up. Stanbic IBTC's merchant page, for example, says international card acceptance requires a site inspection and an indemnity for naira or US dollar settlement. A small shop's terminal may be set up for local cards only.

Hotels and larger businesses

These are the most likely to accept foreign cards, but ask at check-in, and check the receipt is in naira.

The fees your own bank adds

The Nigerian side sets the naira price. Your bank decides what that costs you in your home currency. Examples from the banks' own pages:

Card issuerWhat its page says
Barclays (UK)2.99% non-sterling transaction fee on purchases, cash withdrawals and refunds; Visa rate on the day
Monzo (UK)Card payments abroad fee-free; Mastercard rate passed on; cash limits apply

These are examples only, not a ranking. Read your own card's terms.

Dynamic currency conversion

Some terminals and ATMs offer to charge you in pounds, dollars or euros rather than naira. Asda Money's guide explains that with this dynamic currency conversion the rate is set by the retailer or its bank, whereas paying in local currency means your card network's rate applies. It can be worse, though not always. Choosing naira keeps the conversion with your own bank, whose fee you can check in advance.

A worked example

Example, with made-up rates: a ₦250,000 hotel bill. At a network rate of ₦1,950 per pound, that is £128.21; with a 2.99% fee, about £132.04. If the terminal instead offers £136.00 under dynamic currency conversion, saying yes costs about £3.96 more than paying in naira with that card. With a fee-free card, the naira option would cost £128.21.

Debit or credit card?

For purchases, a credit card and a debit card from the same bank often carry the same foreign transaction fee. The difference shows at the ATM: Asda Money notes that taking cash on a credit card usually adds a cash advance fee of around 2% to 3% on top of the foreign transaction fee, and interest may start straight away. Use a debit card for cash and keep the credit card for hotel deposits and purchases.

Refunds and deposits

A refund on a foreign card is converted back at the rate on the day it is processed, which may differ from the day you paid. Barclays' page, for example, applies its non-sterling fee to refunds as well as purchases, so a cancelled booking can cost you twice. Hotels often take a deposit or "hold" on your card at check-in; ask how much and when it will be released.

Before you travel

  • Read your card's fee page for purchases, cash and refunds.
  • Check your bank's app for travel settings and how it confirms transactions abroad.
  • Carry two cards on different networks, kept separately.
  • Save your bank's international helpline number somewhere other than your wallet.

If your card is declined

  1. Check your bank's app for a fraud alert and approve the transaction.
  2. Try a different terminal or the merchant's online link.
  3. Ask whether the merchant accepts international cards at all.
  4. Have a backup: a second card on a different network, or naira you can transfer.

Where Pryme fits

Where a foreign card is not accepted, paying by transfer usually is. A Pryme multicurrency account lets you convert pounds, dollars or euros to naira with Swap, rate first and fee on its own line, and then pay the merchant by naira transfer with Send. For more on choosing between card, transfer and cash, see spending in Nigeria on a visit.

Questions people ask

Do Nigerian POS machines accept foreign cards?

Some do. It depends on how the merchant's terminal is set up; Stanbic IBTC, for example, requires a site inspection for international card acceptance. Hotels and larger businesses are most likely to accept.

Can I pay online in Nigeria with a foreign card?

Often yes. Paystack, for example, accepts international cards and charges them in naira by default.

How much does my bank charge to use my card in Nigeria?

It depends on your bank. Barclays lists 2.99% on non-sterling transactions; Monzo describes card payments abroad as fee-free. Check your card's terms.

Should I pay in pounds or naira on a card machine in Nigeria?

Naira. Paying in your home currency means dynamic currency conversion, where the merchant's bank sets the rate.
