Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Earthen, concrete or tarpaulin pond: cost compared

A side-by-side comparison of earthen, concrete and tarpaulin fish ponds in Nigeria: set-up cost, lifespan, stocking and the work each one needs.

The short answer

Tarpaulin ponds are the cheapest to set up, concrete ponds cost the most per fish but last longest, and earthen ponds cost least per fish where you have suitable land and water. In our labelled example, set-up cost per fish space is about ₦667 for tarpaulin, ₦2,833 for concrete and ₦400 for earthen, though feed and water management matter more to profit than the pond itself.

The three main options

Most Nigerian catfish farms use one of three pond types. Each suits a different situation: how much land you have, whether it holds water, how long you plan to farm and how much cash you have at the start.

Tarpaulin (collapsible) pond
A PVC liner on a metal or wooden frame, set on level ground. Quick to install and move.
Concrete pond
Block or concrete walls with a plastered, sealed floor and a drain. Permanent.
Earthen pond
A pond dug into the ground, best on clay soil near a water source. Larger and more natural, with algae and insects as extra food.

Cost compared (example)

The figures below are an example for comparison only. Prices depend on size, materials, labour and land. The stocking numbers are example planning figures; ask your hatchery or a fisheries extension officer what density suits your water supply.

TarpaulinConcreteEarthen

Set-up cost per fish space₦667₦2,833₦400
LifespanA few years; shorter in direct sunMany years with maintenanceMany years; banks need repair
MovableYesNoNo
Water changesFrequentFrequentLess frequent; natural food
HarvestingEasy: drain and netEasy: drainHarder: needs seine nets or draining

Cost per fish space is set-up cost divided by fish per cycle: ₦200,000 ÷ 300 = ₦667; ₦850,000 ÷ 300 = ₦2,833; ₦600,000 ÷ 1,500 = ₦400. Spread over several cycles, each falls further. Lifespans are general descriptions, not tested figures; ask installers what warranty they give.

When each one makes sense

Tarpaulin

Best for beginners, renters and anyone testing the business. You can start in a compound, move if your lease ends, and add ponds as you grow. Keep it shaded, because sun weakens the liner, and set it on level ground free of sharp stones.

Concrete

Best for farmers who own the land and plan to farm for years. Concrete ponds are easy to drain, clean and harvest, and good for intensive feeding. Make sure the plaster is sealed and the pond is cured and flushed before stocking, since fresh concrete can harm fish.

Earthen

Best where you have clay soil, a stream or high water table, and space. Earthen ponds hold more fish per naira of set-up, and natural food in the pond can help growth. They need more land, are harder to secure against theft and predators, and are slower to harvest.

Hidden costs by pond type

  • Tarpaulin: a shade structure, a level base, and a replacement liner when it wears out. Leaks can empty a pond overnight, so keep a repair kit.
  • Concrete: plumbing for inlet and drain, curing and flushing time before stocking, and periodic replastering.
  • Earthen: inlet and outlet structures, bank repairs after heavy rain, predator nets and stronger security.
  • All types: pumping water, which costs power or fuel every week of the cycle.

Ask any installer to include plumbing, drainage and a base in the quote, since a pond price without them can be misleadingly low.

Pond type matters less than feed

Whatever pond you choose, feed will be your biggest running cost. A 2019 Nigerian feeding trial published by the GRÓ Fisheries Training Programme recorded feed conversion ratios from 1.35 to 2.81 depending on the feed, a range that changes cost per kg of fish far more than the difference between pond types. Farm-gate prices also move: a Nasarawa farmer told the News Agency of Nigeria in June 2025 that catfish sold for ₦2,800 to ₦3,500 per kg, down from ₦4,800 a year earlier.

So choose the cheapest pond that fits your land, water and plans, and spend the saving on good fingerlings and feed. See feed cost per kg of fish.

What to check first

  1. Does your land hold water? Dig a test hole and fill it.
  2. Where will clean water come from, and where will used water go?
  3. Do you own the land, or could you be asked to move?
  4. How will you guard the ponds at night?
  5. Can you drain and harvest easily?

Where Pryme fits

When you buy ponds or materials from installers, a Pryme Business Account keeps the farm's spending in one place, and a Savings Box can hold money for adding ponds later. For a full first-cycle budget, see catfish start-up cost. For building a fund for expansion, see how to save when inflation is high.

Questions people ask

Which fish pond is cheapest in Nigeria?

A tarpaulin pond is usually cheapest to set up. In our example it costs ₦200,000 for a 4m × 3m pond, against ₦850,000 for concrete of the same size.

Is concrete pond better than tarpaulin?

Concrete lasts longer and suits owned land; tarpaulin is cheaper and movable. Feed and water management affect profit more than pond type.

How many catfish can a tarpaulin pond hold?

It depends on size and water supply. Our example uses 300 fish in a 4m × 3m pond as a planning figure; confirm with your hatchery.

Is earthen pond good for catfish farming?

Yes, where the soil holds water and there is a good water source. It has the lowest set-up cost per fish in our example but needs more land and security.
