Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Why your first transfer to Nigeria takes longer than later ones

Identity checks, a new recipient and a new payment card get extra checks the first time: what is checked, how long it can take and how to speed it up.

The short answer

A first transfer to Nigeria is slower because the provider has to verify who you are, screen a recipient it has never paid before and check a payment method it has not seen. Taptap Send says most identity checks finish in minutes but some need a manual review of a few hours; once your account and recipient are established, later transfers usually skip those steps.

What happens on a first transfer that does not happen later

Every licensed money transfer firm has to know its customer before it moves money. On your first transfer that work is all done at once: your identity, your payment method, the person you are paying and, sometimes, where the money came from. On the tenth transfer to the same aunt from the same debit card, most of those answers are already on file, so the payment goes straight to processing.

The delay is rarely about Nigeria as a destination. It is about newness. A new account, a new recipient and a new card each count as a fresh risk signal, and a first transfer usually has all three.

The checks, one by one

1. Identity verification

Providers ask for a government photo ID and usually a selfie. Taptap Send's help page (updated 19 October 2026) says verification is required by law, most checks finish in a few minutes, and "some require a manual review and can take a few hours". It asks for the original document with all four corners visible, and says screenshots, photocopies, blurred or cropped images, expired documents and a name or date of birth that does not match are common reasons for rejection. A rejected upload sends you back to the start, which is where many first-transfer delays come from.

2. Payment method checks

A card used for the first time may trigger a 3D Secure step with your own bank. Taptap Send's common-issues page (updated 17 September 2026) says a transfer fails if that step is not completed and that the card must be in the account holder's name. Keep your banking app installed and signed in so the approval prompt reaches you.

3. New-recipient screening

The first payment to a Nigerian account is checked against the name you typed and against sanctions and fraud lists. If the name on the Nigerian bank's records differs from what you entered, the payment can be held while someone compares them. See name mismatch holds for how that is usually resolved.

4. Source of funds or purpose questions

Larger or unusual first payments can prompt questions about where the money came from. Sendwave's support pages say it may ask about the recipient or a payment and list acceptable documents: a full-month bank statement or a payslip from the last three months, a loan agreement, a recent tax document or a savings statement. Its support page adds: "If a transaction requires review for regulatory reasons, we will contact you." Ria's help centre says a review usually takes about two hours and that a transfer can be cancelled if requested information is not received within seven days.

How long the extra time usually is

Providers do not publish a single figure, and it depends on whether a person has to look at your file. From the pages above:

StageWhat the provider's own page says
Automatic ID checkTaptap Send: most finish in a few minutes
Manual ID reviewTaptap Send: can take a few hours
Regulatory review of a paymentSendwave: it contacts you; no time given
Ria reviewUsually about two hours; cancelled if no reply within seven days
Bank credit after "Delivered"Taptap Send: allow up to 2 additional business days for bank transfers

A review that starts on a Friday evening or before a Nigerian public holiday can run into the next working day. For the normal timetable once checks are done, see how long a transfer to Nigeria takes.

How to make the first one faster

  1. Verify your identity before the day you need to send, with a clear photo of the original document and good light for the selfie.
  2. Use a debit card or bank account in your own name, and have your banking app ready for any approval step.
  3. Copy the recipient's name exactly as their Nigerian bank holds it, and check the 10-digit account number with them. Our guide to details needed for a Nigerian bank lists what to collect.
  4. Start with a modest amount if timing matters; a large first transfer is more likely to prompt source-of-funds questions.
  5. Answer any request in the app quickly and in full. A partial answer usually restarts the wait.

Why later transfers are faster

Once your identity is verified, the recipient has been paid successfully and your card has a history, the same checks run in the background and pass quickly. They are not switched off. A new recipient, a much larger amount, an expired ID or a change of address can bring a review back. Taptap Send's identity page says it may ask you to verify again if your document expires, your details change or regulation requires it.

Sending limits also tend to grow with history. Sendwave's support page says that "other than sending regularly, there is no action that you need to take to get higher limits".

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account can be opened from any country, and verification happens once when you open it, not when you first send. After that, the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve each payment. See how it works or open an account.

Questions people ask

Why is my first money transfer to Nigeria taking so long?

First transfers combine identity verification, a new card and a new recipient, all of which may be checked manually. Most clear within hours; check the app for any request for information.

Do money transfer apps check every transfer?

Yes, but for an established account and recipient the checks usually run automatically and pass quickly. New details or unusual amounts can trigger a review.

Why was my ID rejected on Taptap Send?

Its help page lists blurred or cropped images, screenshots or photocopies, expired documents and a name or date of birth mismatch as common reasons.

Will sending a small amount first help?

It can, because large first payments are more likely to prompt source-of-funds questions. It does not skip identity checks, which every new customer goes through.
