Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

FBAR for a Nigerian account with a parent: joint signatory

When being a joint holder or signatory on a parent's Nigerian account means you file an FBAR, how to report it, and what to keep.

The short answer

Yes, it can. A US person must file an FBAR if they have a financial interest in, or signature or other authority over, foreign accounts worth more than $10,000 combined at any time in the year. Being a joint owner of a parent's Nigerian account is a financial interest, and being a signatory who can instruct the bank alone or together with the parent is signature authority, so the account counts in your total and is reported.

Why children abroad end up on parents' accounts

Many Nigerians in the US are added to a parent's account in Lagos or Owerri so they can help with bills, sign if the parent is ill, or manage pension and rent money. Sometimes the account is opened jointly; sometimes the child is added to the mandate as a signatory. For US purposes, both can bring the account into your FBAR.

Financial interest or signature authority?

Financial interest
You are an owner of record or hold legal title, alone or jointly. A joint account with your mother is a financial interest for you.
Signature authority
FinCEN defines it as the authority of an individual, alone or in conjunction with another, to control the disposition of assets in the account by direct communication with the financial institution.
Neither
You only send money in, or the parent tells you the balance. Paying into an account does not give you authority over it.

The words "in conjunction with another" matter. If the bank's mandate says withdrawals need both your signature and your father's, you still have signature authority, even though you cannot act alone.

How it changes your FBAR

  • The account counts towards the $10,000 aggregate test with your own accounts.
  • For a joint account, FinCEN says each joint owner reports the entire value of the account, not a share, and gives the number of joint owners (an estimate is allowed).
  • For a signature-only account, you report it in the part of the form for accounts where you have authority but no financial interest, with the owner's details.
  • The value is the account's maximum during the year, converted at the Treasury rate for the last day of the year.

A worked example

Example only. The rate is illustrative. Ifeoma, a nurse in Dallas, has her own Nigerian savings account with a maximum of ₦3,000,000 in the year. She is a joint holder on her mother's account, which peaked at ₦9,000,000 when rent came in. At an illustrative ₦1,500 = $1:

AccountMaximum valueDollarsHow reported
Ifeoma's savings₦3,000,000$2,000Her own account
Joint with mother₦9,000,000$6,000Joint account, full value, 1 other owner
Total$8,000Under $10,000: no FBAR on these figures

If the mother's account had peaked at ₦13,000,000 ($8,667, rounded up), the total would be $10,667 and Ifeoma would file, reporting the full value of the joint account, even though most of the money belongs to her mother.

Things the FBAR does not change

  • Ownership and tax. Reporting an account does not make the money yours for income tax. Interest on your mother's money is not your income because you are a signatory. If you are a joint owner, who owns the interest depends on the facts; ask a preparer.
  • Form 8938. Form 8938 has its own rules on what is reported and much higher thresholds. Compare the two in the IRS chart, and see Form 8938 and FBAR for Nigerian accounts.
  • Gifts. Money you put into a parent's account is a gift; the IRS gift tax rules apply, not the FBAR.

Powers of attorney and mandates

A power of attorney can work the same way. If your parent has given you a power of attorney that the Nigerian bank has registered, and you can now instruct the bank directly to move money, that looks like control by direct communication with the bank, which is the FinCEN test. A power of attorney that the bank has never seen, kept in a drawer for emergencies, is a different matter, because until it is lodged you cannot use it to instruct the bank. Check what the bank's records actually show.

Questions to ask the Nigerian bank

  • Am I listed as a joint owner, or only as a signatory on the mandate?
  • Can I instruct transfers alone, or only with my parent's signature?
  • Is a power of attorney in my name registered on the account, and from what date?
  • Can you provide statements for January to December so I can find the highest balance?

Practical steps

  1. Ask the Nigerian bank for the account mandate, so you know whether you are a joint owner or a signatory.
  2. Get statements for the full calendar year to find the maximum value.
  3. Keep records for five years, as the IRS requires for FBAR.
  4. If you no longer need authority, ask the bank in writing to remove you, and keep the confirmation. The FBAR follows the authority you had during the year.
  5. Remember Schedule B on your tax return asks whether you had a financial interest in or signature authority over a foreign account.

If you have missed years, read late FBAR without penalty: the delinquent procedure. This is general information, not tax advice.

Where Pryme fits

Some families choose a separate arrangement instead of a joint account. A parent can hold their own Pryme account and set up a Personal Assistant to prepare bills and payments for their approval, while you send money to them. Whether a given setup gives you signature authority depends on its terms, so check before you assume.

Questions people ask

Do I need to file FBAR if I am a signatory on my parent's account in Nigeria?

If the account, added to your other foreign accounts, takes the total over $10,000 at any time in the year, yes. Signature authority counts even when you must sign together with your parent.

Do I report the full balance of a joint account with my mother?

Yes. FinCEN's instructions say each joint owner reports the entire value of the account.

Does being on my parent's account mean I pay tax on their interest?

Not because of signature authority alone. FBAR is a reporting rule; income tax depends on who owns the money. Ask a preparer about joint ownership.

How do I stop having to report my parent's account?

Ask the bank in writing to remove you from the mandate and keep the confirmation. You still report for any year in which you had authority.
