Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

Can I export Ghana cocoa products to Nigeria?

Nigeria's import ban list includes cocoa butter, powder and cake. What it means for Ghana chocolate and cocoa products, NAFDAC rules and ETLS.

The short answer

Many Ghana cocoa products cannot legally enter Nigeria: Nigeria's import prohibition list, as published on the Nigeria Trade Information Portal, includes cocoa butter, cocoa powder and cocoa cake, and an April 2026 revision reported by ThisDay covers cocoa products and chocolate blocks over 2 kg. Products not on the list still need NAFDAC registration and a Form M, and ETLS does not override a prohibition.

Ghana is one of the world's largest cocoa producers, and Ghanaian chocolate and cocoa products are well known. Nigeria is also a cocoa producer, and it protects its processing industry. That makes this a question where the Nigerian side decides the answer, product by product.

What Nigeria prohibits

Nigeria keeps an import prohibition list enforced by the Nigeria Customs Service. The Nigeria Trade Information Portal publishes it with HS codes. Among its 25 entries are cocoa butter, cocoa powder and cocoa cakes, alongside items such as refined vegetable oils and retail-packed sugar.

In April 2026 ThisDay reported a revised list from the Federal Ministry of Finance, dated 1 April 2026, with 17 categories, which it said covers cocoa products and chocolate blocks over 2 kg. The report did not name the legal instrument or effective date, so treat the exact scope as something to confirm against the HS line with the Nigeria Customs Service or a licensed agent before you ship.

ProductPosition on the sources we readWhat to do
Cocoa butter, powder, cakeOn the published prohibition listDo not ship for import into Nigeria
Chocolate in blocks over 2 kgReported in the April 2026 revisionTreat as prohibited unless customs confirms otherwise
Retail chocolate bars and confectioneryNot named in the reports we readConfirm the HS line with customs; NAFDAC registration needed
Cocoa beansNot covered by the sources we readConfirm with customs and the plant quarantine authority

ETLS does not lift a ban

Ghanaian exporters sometimes assume ECOWAS free trade overrides national bans. The ECOWAS ETLS site says exporters must check the importing state's import rules and prohibition lists with that state's ETLS focal point. ETLS removes customs duty on approved originating goods; it does not oblige a member state to admit goods it prohibits. Duty treatment for goods that are allowed is covered in whether Ghana goods enter Nigeria duty-free.

If the product is allowed: NAFDAC and Form M

NAFDAC's guideline for imported food products (effective 1 March 2021) says unregistered food may not be imported. Registration needs a Nigerian applicant company registered with the CAC, a power of attorney from the Ghanaian manufacturer, a certificate of manufacture and free sale authenticated by the Nigerian mission, a registered trademark, a certificate of analysis, a factory inspection and label vetting. The guideline gives a five-year certificate and a 120-working-day timeline. The full process is in registering a Ghana-made product with NAFDAC.

The Nigerian importer then opens a Form M through its bank. Sterling Bank's Form M FAQ says it is mandatory for physical goods regardless of value or payment method, requires a proforma invoice valid up to 90 days and an electronic insurance certificate for 110% of the invoice value, plus product permits such as NAFDAC's.

The Ghana side

Ghana's cocoa sector is regulated by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). We could not open a COCOBOD page setting out its current rules for exporting processed cocoa products, so we do not state licensing steps here. A Ghanaian manufacturer should confirm with COCOBOD and with Ghana's export promotion authority what export permits apply to its product, and its own Ghana FDA registration remains a separate matter.

Worked example of the decision (illustrative)

An Accra company makes three lines: 1 kg bags of cocoa powder, 25 kg cartons of 5 kg chocolate couverture blocks, and 50 g chocolate bars. On the sources above, the cocoa powder is on Nigeria's prohibition list and the 5 kg blocks fall within the reported ban on blocks over 2 kg, so neither can be imported. Only the 50 g bars are a candidate, and only after the HS line is confirmed and NAFDAC registration is complete. The company's realistic Nigerian range is one product out of three.

What happens if banned goods are shipped

Nigeria Customs enforces the prohibition list at ports and land borders, and goods on it can be seized. A Ghanaian exporter who ships cocoa powder to a Lagos buyer under a different description is exposing the buyer, the agent and itself to seizure and prosecution, and losing the goods. A label that says "chocolate drink mix" does not change the HS classification of what is inside; customs classifies by composition. If a buyer in Nigeria asks you to describe goods differently on the invoice, decline the order.

What to check first

  1. Find the HS code for each product and check it against Nigeria Customs' current prohibition list.
  2. For allowed products, appoint a Nigerian importer or agent who can hold NAFDAC registration.
  3. Budget for NAFDAC's timeline before the first order.
  4. Confirm Ghana-side export rules with COCOBOD.

Where Pryme fits

If you supply a Nigerian distributor, a Pryme Business Account can receive naira or dollars on account details for each currency, and Swap converts only when you choose. See cross-border payment between Ghana and Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Can I send Ghana chocolate to Nigeria?

Retail chocolate is not named in the reports we read, but blocks over 2 kg are reported as banned, and any food needs NAFDAC registration first. Confirm the HS line with Nigeria Customs.

Is cocoa powder banned in Nigeria?

Yes, cocoa powder appears on Nigeria's import prohibition list published on the Nigeria Trade Information Portal.

Does ECOWAS free trade allow banned goods?

No. ETLS removes duty on approved goods, but exporters must still respect the importing country's prohibition lists.

How long does NAFDAC registration take for imported food?

NAFDAC's imported food guideline gives 120 working days, with queries to be closed within 90 days.
