Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Sending UK staff to your Nigerian company: expatriate quota

To post a UK employee to your Nigerian company you need expatriate quota, an STR visa and CERPAC. The sequence, documents and 2025 reforms.

The short answer

To post a British or other non-Nigerian employee to work in your Nigerian company, the company first needs a business permit and expatriate quota approval from the Ministry of Interior, then the employee gets a Subject to Regularisation (STR) visa and, after arrival, a CERPAC residence card. Since the Ministry's April 2025 reforms, each quota position must be understudied by two Nigerian graduates, and the process runs on an online Expatriate Administration System.

Who needs expatriate quota

Expatriate quota is the Ministry of Interior's approval for a Nigerian company to employ a foreign national in a named position. It applies to non-Nigerian staff. A Nigerian citizen who lives in the UK does not need it to work for a Nigerian company, though a dual national should travel and work on the Nigerian passport to avoid confusion. Short business visits (meetings, site visits) use visitor or temporary work permits instead; GOV.UK's Nigeria travel advice, updated 16 October 2026, says British visitors need a visa obtained before travel and that visa on arrival is no longer available.

The sequence

  1. Business permit. NIPC's FAQ says an enterprise with foreign equity needs a business permit from the Ministry of Interior. This comes before or alongside the quota application.
  2. Expatriate quota. Applied for online. Firmus Advisory's 2022 guide lists the documents: the application form, CAC documents, a feasibility report, audited accounts and bank reference, salaries and designations, any joint venture agreement, tax clearance, lease or C of O for premises, a training programme and understudy list, sector licences, evidence of capital importation, the business permit and proof of fee payment.
  3. STR visa. For each employee, applied for through a Nigerian mission (for the UK, the High Commission in London) and, KPMG reported, reviewed at NIS headquarters in about 10 working days.
  4. Travel and CERPAC. After arrival, the employee is regularised with a CERPAC (Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card). KPMG reported that CERPAC is now automated online, with an e-CERPAC issued first and the card sent to the employer's address.

What changed in 2025

On 11 April 2025 the Minister of Interior announced reforms that KPMG summarised on Mondaq:

  • An Expatriate Administration System from 1 May 2025.
  • Two Nigerians with a BSc or HND to understudy each expatriate quota position.
  • Quota slot lifespan of four to seven years depending on industry.
  • Higher business permit and quota fees (amounts not published in that summary).
  • Temporary Work Permit e-visas at $600 for three months and $1,100 for six months, as reported.
  • Repatriation insurance of $500 to $1,000 a year per expatriate, as reported.

Firmus's earlier guide described quota approvals of two years renewable twice within a seven-year lifespan, and NIPC's FAQ says expatriate quota is usually granted for two to three years and renewable. Expect the Ministry's current letters to state the exact term for your approval.

Planning from the UK

Quota is the long pole. Before you promise a start date to a UK employee:

  • Check the company's capital and capital importation records. The quota file asks for evidence, and CAC's 2023 notice on ₦100 million capital drew on the Ministry's quota handbook; see minimum share capital for a foreign-owned company.
  • Make sure tax clearance and audited accounts are current. A new company may need to show a feasibility report instead of trading history.
  • Identify the two Nigerian understudies for each role and plan their training.
  • Agree who in Nigeria will handle the STR and CERPAC follow-up, as cards are delivered to the employer address.

The employee's side

The posted employee needs a passport valid for at least six months after arrival and a yellow fever certificate, according to GOV.UK's travel advice. Once they hold a CERPAC, GOV.UK says they do not need a separate visa to enter. UK tax and National Insurance on a posting depend on residence, how long the posting lasts and who employs them; take advice before the move. Our guide to paying a UK-based director of a Nigerian company covers related payroll questions.

Worked example

Example only: a Bristol engineering firm's Lagos subsidiary wants its British operations manager in Lagos from next spring. In month one the subsidiary confirms its NIPC registration and business permit. In months two and three it assembles the quota file, including a CCI for the capital its UK parent sent in, and names two Nigerian engineers as understudies. Once quota is approved, the manager applies for an STR visa through the High Commission in London. On arrival, the subsidiary starts the CERPAC application. If the quota approval takes longer than expected, short visits on a temporary work permit can bridge the gap.

Common reasons for delay

  • Tax clearance or audited accounts out of date when the file is submitted.
  • No evidence of capital importation for the money the foreign shareholder put in.
  • Job titles or salaries in the quota file that do not match the employment contract or the STR application.
  • No named understudies, or understudies without the qualifications the reforms call for.
  • The business permit still pending when the quota application goes in.

Keep one master file with the CAC status report, NIPC certificate, business permit, CCIs, tax clearance and the quota approval letter. The same documents come back at renewal, and the Ministry will compare them.

Where Pryme fits

A posted employee is often paid partly in pounds and partly in naira. Pryme Business Accounts include payroll and a Compliance agent that keeps permit and quota renewal dates visible; it prepares, and a person approves.

Questions people ask

What is expatriate quota in Nigeria?

It is the Ministry of Interior's approval for a Nigerian company to employ foreign nationals in named positions. Each employee then needs an STR visa and a CERPAC.

How long does expatriate quota last?

NIPC's FAQ says it is usually granted for two to three years and renewable; KPMG reported in 2025 that slot lifespans now run four to seven years depending on industry.

Do Nigerians abroad need expatriate quota to work in Nigeria?

No. Quota applies to foreign nationals. A Nigerian citizen can work for a Nigerian company without it.

What is CERPAC?

The Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card, issued after an expatriate arrives on an STR visa. KPMG reported in 2025 that it is now processed online.
