Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Ajo and esusu circles in the UK: risks and records

Rotating savings circles are common among Nigerians in the UK. How the money flows, what protection you do not have, and the records that prevent disputes.

The short answer

An ajo or esusu circle in the UK is a private arrangement among members: there is no FSCS protection, no regulator to complain to and no interest, so your safeguards are the people, the written rules and the records. Keep a signed rota, pay by bank transfer with a reference, track every payout in a shared ledger, and remember that a large payout can count as capital for benefits such as Universal Credit.

Every month, ten friends from church in Peckham each put £200 into a pot, and one of them takes the £2,000. Over ten months everyone gets a turn. Ajo, esusu, adashi or "pardner" in Caribbean communities: the idea is the same, and for many Nigerians in the UK it is the most disciplined saving they do. It works on trust, and it fails when trust is all it has.

How the money flows, and who carries the risk

A circle is an interest-free loan between members. The person who takes the pot first has borrowed from everyone else; the person who takes it last has lent to everyone else.

PositionPaid in over 10 monthsReceivedEffectively
1st£2,000£2,000 in month 1Borrowed £1,800 interest-free
5th£2,000£2,000 in month 5Lent early, borrowed late
10th£2,000£2,000 in month 10Lent £1,800 interest-free

Example figures: ten members at £200 a month. Everyone pays £2,000 and receives £2,000; only the timing differs. The risk falls on later positions. If the member who took month 2 stops paying in month 4, the remaining pots are short and someone further down the rota bears the loss.

What protection you do not have

  • No FSCS cover. The FSCS protects eligible deposits at banks, building societies and credit unions, currently up to £120,000 per person per firm. A circle is not any of those.
  • No regulator. We found no FCA guidance written for rotating savings circles. A circle among people who know each other is a private agreement; disputes are between members, and the remedy is usually informal or the small claims route.
  • No interest. Members get back what they paid in. The benefit is discipline and early access, not a return.

A "circle" that promises more than members pay in, sells positions, or is run by a stranger online is not an ajo any more. The FCA lists high returns, pressure to act fast and requests for secrecy among the warning signs of a scam.

Rules worth writing down

  1. Members' names, phone numbers and the amount per cycle.
  2. The rota, agreed and signed (a WhatsApp poll is better than nothing; a signed sheet is better).
  3. The due date, how late payment is handled, and what happens if someone leaves after collecting.
  4. Who holds the money between collection and payout, and whether it ever sits in one person's account.
  5. How a member's turn is handled if they die or move abroad.
  6. How swaps of position are recorded.

Records that settle disputes

  • Pay by bank transfer, not cash, with a reference such as "Ajo Oct 2026 Bisi". Each member then has a bank record.
  • Keep a shared ledger: who paid, when, and who received each pot.
  • If the circle is large or long-running, consider a group bank account. The Resource Centre's guidance for community groups suggests multiple signatories, for example three with any two required to approve.
  • Screenshot nothing as your only record. Bank statements outlast chat histories.

Why the early slots matter

Circles often give the first payouts to the organiser or to members with an urgent need: a deposit on a flat, a wedding, school fees at home. That is fair if everyone agrees, but it concentrates risk. Some circles ask newer members to take later slots until they have paid a few rounds, which protects the group from someone joining, collecting early and disappearing. Agree that rule before the first collection, not after the first missed payment.

Benefits and big payouts

If you claim Universal Credit, the timing of your payout matters. Shelter's legal guidance on UC capital says capital below £6,000 is ignored, capital between £6,000 and £16,000 reduces UC through tariff income, and capital over £16,000 ends entitlement. A £2,000 pot landing in an account that already holds £5,000 takes you over the first threshold until you spend it. Information only; check with your work coach or an adviser.

If something goes wrong

  • Talk to the member first, with the ledger in front of you.
  • If money was taken dishonestly, report it to Report Fraud, which replaced Action Fraud in December 2025 (0300 123 2040 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; Police Scotland on 101). See reporting a scam to Report Fraud.
  • For a plain debt from a member who will not pay, the county court small claims track is the usual formal route.

The Nigeria library compares circles with formal savings in ajo, esusu and thrift vs a savings app. A registered cooperative at home is a different arrangement with legal rules; see joining a Nigerian cooperative from the UK.

Where Pryme fits

For a circle that pays out in naira to family at home, members can send from a Pryme account, and each contribution can carry a verifiable receipt that the organiser can check is genuine and unaltered. It does not make a circle safer on its own; written rules and records do that.

Questions people ask

Is ajo or esusu legal in the UK?

We found no rule that bans a private rotating circle among people who know each other. It is a private agreement, so there is no FSCS cover or regulator, and disputes are between members.

Is my money protected in a savings circle?

No. FSCS protection covers deposits at banks, building societies and credit unions, not a circle. Your protection is the written rules and bank records.

Does an ajo payout affect Universal Credit?

It can. Capital over £6,000 reduces UC and over £16,000 ends it, per Shelter's guidance on UC capital rules.

What if a member collects and stops paying?

Use your ledger and bank records to ask for payment. If it was dishonest, report to Report Fraud; for a debt, the small claims track is the formal route.
