Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Make money

The envelope (cash) budget method in Nigeria

How to run the envelope budget with cash or separate savings pots, a worked ₦180,000 example, the rules that make it stick, and where it falls short.

The short answer

The envelope method splits your take-home pay into named envelopes, such as food, transport and rent, on payday; when an envelope is empty, that category stops until next month. In Nigeria you can run it with cash or with separate pots in an app or bank, which is safer than keeping large sums at home.

How the method works

The idea is old and simple. On payday you decide how much each category gets, put that amount in its own envelope, and spend only from it. If food money runs out on the 24th, you either eat from what is in the house or move money from another envelope, and you see exactly what that costs you. The method works because it makes overspending visible before it happens, not at the end of the month.

Cash envelopes or digital pots?

Cash envelopesDigital pots
Feel of spendingVery strong; you see notes leaveWeaker; numbers on a screen
SafetyTheft, fire, family borrowingHeld by a licensed institution
Paying billsMany bills are paid by transfer or cardPay straight from the pot or move first
Getting the cashWithdrawal limits and charges applyNone needed
Best forMarket food, transport, small daily spendsRent, school fees, savings, bills

Large cash withdrawals carry a cost: Standard Chartered's June 2026 fee guide, for example, applies a 3% charge on individual withdrawals above ₦500,000 a week under the CBN cashless policy. Most people's envelopes are well under that, but it is one reason to keep rent and savings envelopes digital and hold only the daily-spend envelopes as cash.

Deposit insurance only covers money in an insured institution. The NDIC's FAQ gives cover of up to ₦5,000,000 per depositor at a commercial bank and ₦2,000,000 at a microfinance bank. Notes in an envelope at home have no cover at all.

Worked example on ₦180,000 (labelled example)

Ngozi takes home ₦180,000 a month and is paid on the 25th. She sets nine envelopes:

EnvelopeAmountCash or pot
Food and market₦55,000Cash, split weekly
Transport₦30,000Cash, split weekly
Rent (yearly bill saved monthly)₦35,000Pot
Power and fuel₦12,000Pot
Airtime and data₦6,000Pot
Toiletries and household₦7,000Cash
Giving and family₦8,000Pot
Savings and emergency₦15,000Pot
Fun and eating out₦12,000Cash
Total₦180,000

The envelopes add to exactly ₦180,000, so every naira has a job. For the weekly cash envelopes she divides by the number of weeks until next payday, usually four or five, and keeps any leftover in the next week's envelope. Moving money between her own accounts at the same bank does not attract the ₦50 stamp duty that applies to transfers of ₦10,000 or more since January 2026, according to Kuda's help centre notice on the Nigeria Tax Act 2025; transfers to another bank or person do.

Setting it up in your first month

The hardest part is choosing the amounts. Do not guess. Pull the last two or three months of your bank and wallet statements and add up what actually went on each category, then round up. If food has been taking ₦60,000, an envelope of ₦45,000 will fail in week three and you will abandon the method.

  1. List every spend from the last 60 to 90 days and group it into categories.
  2. Take the monthly average for each category.
  3. Cut only where you have a plan, for example cooking more or a cheaper data plan.
  4. Make sure the envelopes add up to your take-home pay, no more and no less.
  5. Label envelopes or pots clearly and keep the cash ones in a safe place at home.

In the first month, expect at least one envelope to run dry. That is the method working: it shows you where your estimate was wrong.

If you share a household, agree who holds which envelope. One person usually runs food and household; the other can run transport and bills. Both should see the totals at the end of the month.

Rules that make it stick

  1. Fill the envelopes on payday, before any spending.
  2. Fund savings and rent first; fun goes last.
  3. If you raid an envelope, write down which one and why.
  4. Carry only that day's or week's cash, not the whole envelope.
  5. Review the amounts after three months; most people underestimate food and transport the first time.

Pros and cons

What it does well

  • Stops the slow leak of small spending, especially on food and transport.
  • Easy to explain to a spouse or older children.
  • Works on any income, including irregular pay.

Where it falls short

  • Cash is risky to keep and inconvenient for bills paid by transfer.
  • Prices rise during the month; the NBS put food inflation at 19.59% year on year in September 2026, so envelopes need resetting more often than in calmer years.
  • It does not tell you how to set the amounts. Pair it with zero-based budgeting or a realistic food budget.

Where Pryme fits

Naira Savings Boxes can act as digital envelopes for rent, savings and bills, and airtime and data or electricity can be paid in the app. The Personal Assistant can remind you when it is time to refill each envelope.

Questions people ask

What is the envelope budgeting method?

You divide your pay into named envelopes on payday and spend each category only from its envelope until the next payday.

Can I do envelope budgeting without cash?

Yes. Use separate savings pots or accounts as envelopes. It is safer than holding cash at home.

Is it safe to keep money at home in Nigeria?

Cash at home has no deposit insurance and is exposed to theft and fire. Keep only what you will spend soon.

How many envelopes should I have?

Enough to cover your main categories, usually six to ten. Too many becomes hard to manage.
