Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Electricity subsidy in Nigeria: who pays and what it means

How Nigeria's electricity subsidy works: the gap between cost and allowed tariffs, which bands are frozen, and what removal would mean for you.

The short answer

Nigeria's electricity subsidy is the gap between what it costs to supply power and the tariff NERC allows DisCos to charge. In Ikeja Electric's July 2025 order, that gap was ₦26,345 million for the month, with Bands B to E kept at the tariffs payable since December 2022 while Band A paid ₦209.50 per kWh. Removing it would mean bills closer to cost for those bands.

The word "subsidy" is used loosely in Nigerian power debates. In NERC's tariff orders it has a precise meaning: a tariff shortfall, the difference between the cost-reflective tariff the industry needs and the lower tariff customers are allowed to pay. Reading one order shows how big that gap is and who it benefits.

How the gap is calculated

Each month NERC issues a supplementary order for each DisCo. The July 2025 order for Ikeja Electric (ORDER/NERC/2025/064, effective 1 July 2025) shows the mechanics.

Cost-reflective tariff
The weighted average cost of supplying a kWh to IE customers: ₦185.9 per kWh in the July 2025 order.
Allowed tariff
The weighted average customers actually pay: ₦114.7 per kWh.
Tariff shortfall (subsidy)
The total gap for IE that month: ₦26,345 million (about ₦26.35bn). After a ₦728 million adjustment brought forward from 2024, the order shows ₦25,617 million.

On these figures, IE customers on average paid about 62% of the cost-reflective tariff (114.7 ÷ 185.9).

Which bands are subsidised

Paragraph 9 of the order says the allowed tariffs for Bands B to E "shall remain frozen at the rates payable since December 2022". Band A is set separately.

Band (Non-MD customers)Allowed tariff, ₦/kWh (July 2025)Compared with ₦185.9 weighted cost
A (20h+)209.50Above the average cost figure
B (16h+)62.48About one third
C (12h+)45.80About one quarter
D (8h+)31.24About one sixth
E (4h+)31.24About one sixth

The order does not state band by band that Band A is unsubsidised. What it does show is that Band A's tariff is above the weighted average cost, while Bands B to E pay a fraction of it. The cost of serving any one band can differ from the average, so the comparison is a guide, not a band-level cost figure.

Who pays for the gap

The tariff order records the shortfall but does not set out who funds it or how. In public debate it is usually described as a government obligation. For a household, the practical point is narrower: the shortfall is money the industry does not collect from customers on Bands B to E, so those customers pay less per kWh than the cost of supply. How that gap is covered, and whether it is fully paid, is a question for government and the industry rather than something your token receipt shows. For how tariffs are built, see how electricity tariffs are set (MYTO).

What removal would change

Example only. If a Band B tariff of ₦62.48 per kWh rose to the July 2025 weighted cost figure of ₦185.9, the price per kWh would be about 2.98 times higher. A Band B home buying 150 kWh a month would see its energy cost (before VAT) rise from ₦9,372 to ₦27,885. Actual changes would depend on how NERC sets any new band tariffs; the average cost figure is not a forecast.

  • Bands B to E would see the largest rises, because their tariffs are furthest below cost.
  • Band A, already above the average cost figure, would be least affected by removal on these numbers.
  • Changes to the cost-reflective tariff itself, driven by gas prices, the exchange rate and inflation, move the gap from month to month.

For the history of past decisions, see NERC tariff decisions since 2008, and for what each band promises, NERC bands A to E explained.

What the subsidy means for your own bill

You do not receive the subsidy as a payment; you receive it as a lower price per kWh. The easiest way to see its size for your household is to compare what you pay with the cost figure in your DisCo's order.

  1. Find your band and tariff on your latest token receipt or bill.
  2. Find the weighted average cost-reflective tariff in the first table of your DisCo's latest order.
  3. Multiply your monthly kWh by the difference. That is roughly the value of the gap to you each month.

Example only. A Band C home on Ikeja Electric using 100 kWh a month at ₦45.80 pays ₦4,580 for energy before VAT. At the July 2025 weighted cost of ₦185.9, the same energy would cost ₦18,590, so the gap is worth about ₦14,010 a month to that home on these figures. Because the cost figure is an average across all customers, treat the result as an indication, not an exact entitlement.

One effect of the band system is that households on poorer supply pay the least per kWh, while Band A customers, who receive the most hours, pay above the average cost figure.

Where to see the current position

Open the latest supplementary order for your DisCo on nerc.gov.ng. The first table compares the cost-reflective and allowed tariffs, and the paragraph after it states the month's shortfall. The figures here are as at the July 2025 IE order and will have moved since.

Where Pryme fits

Whatever happens to tariffs, knowing what you spend helps. A Flexible Savings Box can hold money set aside for electricity, and you can buy tokens in the Pryme app when you need them.

Questions people ask

Is electricity subsidised in Nigeria?

NERC's tariff orders record a shortfall between cost-reflective and allowed tariffs. For Ikeja Electric in July 2025 it was ₦26,345 million for the month.

Which electricity band is not subsidised?

The July 2025 IE order keeps Bands B to E frozen at December 2022 rates, while Band A pays ₦209.50 per kWh, above the ₦185.9 weighted average cost. The order does not label Band A as unsubsidised in so many words.

What is cost-reflective tariff?

The tariff that would recover the full cost of supplying electricity. NERC put IE's weighted average at ₦185.9 per kWh in July 2025.

Will electricity tariff increase if subsidy is removed?

For Bands B to E, yes: their tariffs are well below cost. How much depends on any new tariffs NERC sets.
