Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How many units does ₦5,000 buy on EKEDC?

The arithmetic for a ₦5,000 Eko Electric token in each band, with VAT taken out first, and why your receipt may show fewer units.

The short answer

At the rates on EKEDC's tariff page in October 2026, ₦5,000 buys about 22.2 kWh in Band A (₦209.50 per kWh) and about 76.2 kWh in Band B Non-MD (₦61.00), once 7.5% VAT is taken out. Any vendor service charge or debt deduction reduces the units further, so the receipt is the final word.

The short calculation

A prepaid token amount covers two things: VAT and energy. VAT on electricity remains 7.5% under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, which took effect on 1 January 2026, according to Forvis Mazars' summary of the Act. So the energy part of a payment is the amount divided by 1.075. Divide that by your band's rate per kWh and you get the units (one unit is one kWh).

Step 1
₦5,000 ÷ 1.075 = ₦4,651.16 for energy
Step 2
₦5,000 − ₦4,651.16 = ₦348.84 VAT
Step 3
₦4,651.16 ÷ your band rate = units

₦5,000 in each EKEDC band (worked example)

These use the per-kWh rates shown on EKEDC's Tariff Plans page when we checked it in October 2026. They are an example of the method, not a promise of what your meter will show.

Band and classRate per kWhEnergy part of ₦5,000Units (kWh)
Band A, all classes₦209.50₦4,651.1622.20
Band B, Non-MD₦61.00₦4,651.1676.25
Band B, MD1/MD2₦64.07₦4,651.1672.60
Band C, Non-MD₦48.53₦4,651.1695.84
Band D, Non-MD₦32.48₦4,651.16143.20
Band E, Non-MD₦32.44₦4,651.16143.38

To put the Band A figure in context: 22.2 kWh is roughly what a 1,000-watt load uses in 22 hours of running. A refrigerator, fan, lights and a television together might use several kWh a day in a typical flat, so ₦5,000 in Band A may last only a few days. The same ₦5,000 lasts more than three times as long in Band B, which is why so many Lagos residents check which band their feeder sits in.

An example day on 22.2 kWh

Appliance wattages vary widely, so treat this as an illustration. Suppose a flat runs a 150-watt refrigerator around the clock (3.6 kWh a day if the compressor ran continuously, though most cycle on and off and use less), four 10-watt LED bulbs for six hours (0.24 kWh), a 70-watt standing fan for ten hours (0.7 kWh) and a 100-watt television for five hours (0.5 kWh). That is up to about 5.0 kWh a day. On those example figures, ₦5,000 in Band A lasts a little over four days; in Band B Non-MD, about fifteen days. An air conditioner or electric iron changes the picture quickly, because each can draw 1,000 watts or more while running.

The point of the example is the ratio, not the exact days. Band A units cost about 3.4 times Band B Non-MD units on EKEDC's current table (₦209.50 against ₦61.00), so the same token goes about 3.4 times further on a Band B feeder.

Why your receipt may show fewer units

  • Service or convenience charges. Some vending apps, agents and websites add a fee. If the fee is taken from the ₦5,000, less goes to energy. The channel should show it before you pay.
  • Outstanding debt. If your account carries arrears, for example from a postpaid period, part of the payment can be applied to the debt. The receipt normally shows a separate line.
  • A different tariff class. If you are classed as MD1 or MD2, or as commercial rather than residential, the rate is different. The tariff code on the receipt tells you which.
  • A tariff change. NERC's Eko order allows monthly reviews for inflation, exchange rate and gas prices, and Lagos is now regulated by LASERC. A newer rate would change the result.

Our guide to VAT and deductions on an EKEDC token explains how to read each line of the receipt, and the EKEDC tariff page shows every band and class.

How to check today's figure

  1. Find your band on feederinfo.ekedp.com using your meter or account number.
  2. Check the band rate on ekedp.com/tariff-plans.
  3. Do the sum above, or simply buy a small token and compare the units on the receipt with your calculation.
  4. If the units are clearly lower than the sum and no fee or debt line explains it, report it to EKEDC (0708 067 1170 or 0700 123 5666) with the receipt.

If you are budgeting for a month rather than a single token, budgeting for electricity in Lagos covers how to estimate monthly use.

Where Pryme fits

When you buy a token through Pryme's electricity payments, the amount and any charge are shown before you confirm, and the receipt stays in your transaction history. If you need proof of a purchase for a dispute, you can generate a verifiable receipt with VerifyDoc.ai (receipts).

Questions people ask

How many units is ₦5,000 on Band A in Lagos?

On EKEDC at ₦209.50 per kWh, about 22.2 kWh after 7.5% VAT, using the October 2026 rate. Ikeja Electric's Band A rate in its July 2025 NERC order was also ₦209.50.

How many units is ₦5,000 on Band B Eko Disco?

About 76.25 kWh for Non-MD customers at ₦61.00 per kWh, after VAT, before any vendor fee or debt deduction.

Why did my ₦5,000 token give fewer units than my neighbour's?

You may be on a different feeder and band, a different tariff class, or have a debt being recovered. Compare the tariff code and deduction lines on both receipts.

Is one unit the same as one kWh?

Yes. Prepaid meters count energy in kilowatt-hours, and DisCos call each kWh a unit.
