Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Solar vs EKEDC grid: cost per kWh compared (example)

A labelled worked example comparing the cost per kWh of a home solar system with EKEDC Band A and Band B, and the inputs you must replace with real quotes.

The short answer

On EKEDC's October 2026 tariff, grid power costs about ₦225 per kWh in Band A and about ₦66 in Band B once 7.5% VAT is added. Whether solar beats that depends on the system price, battery life and how much of its output you actually use; on our example figures solar works out at roughly ₦274 to ₦365 per kWh, so it competes with generator fuel more than with Band A grid power.

Start with the grid price you actually pay

The fair comparison is with your own band, not an average. EKEDC's Tariff Plans page, checked in October 2026, shows these per-kWh rates for Non-MD customers (most homes): Band A ₦209.50, Band B ₦61.00, Band C ₦48.53, Band D ₦32.48. VAT remains 7.5% under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, according to Forvis Mazars' summary, so the price per kWh you pay is the rate multiplied by 1.075.

EKEDC band (Non-MD)RateWith 7.5% VAT
Band A₦209.50₦225.21
Band B₦61.00₦65.58
Band C₦48.53₦52.17
Band D₦32.48₦34.92

Two caveats. Tariffs can be revised monthly under NERC's tariff orders, and Lagos is now overseen by LASERC; check ekedp.com/tariff-plans for today's figure. And the grid price only covers the hours you have supply. Band A promises at least 20 hours a day; Band B, 16. Many homes cover the gap with a generator or inverter, and that cost belongs in the comparison too.

How to work out a solar cost per kWh

A solar system's cost per kWh is the total you spend over its useful life divided by the energy it delivers to your appliances over that life. The inputs are:

  • Upfront cost: panels, inverter, batteries, mounting, wiring and installation.
  • Replacement costs: batteries usually wear out before panels. When and how much depends on battery type and how deeply you discharge them; ask the installer for the warranty terms in writing.
  • Usable energy per day: not the panel rating, but what reaches your appliances after weather, battery and inverter losses. On a sunny day this is higher; in the rainy season, lower.
  • Useful life: the number of years you plan to count.
  • Maintenance: cleaning, servicing, and any repairs.

Worked example (all solar figures are assumptions, not quotes)

We could not find an official or published price list for home solar systems in Lagos to cite, so the solar numbers below are illustrative round figures. Replace them with your own written quotes.

Example upfront cost
₦3,000,000
Example usable output
3 kWh a day, every day of the year
Example period
10 years
Example battery replacement
₦1,000,000 once, in year 5
StepExample calculationResult
Energy over 10 years3 kWh × 365 days × 10 years10,950 kWh
Cost per kWh, no replacement₦3,000,000 ÷ 10,950₦273.97
Total cost with one battery replacement₦3,000,000 + ₦1,000,000₦4,000,000
Cost per kWh with replacement₦4,000,000 ÷ 10,950₦365.30

On these example figures, solar costs more per kWh than EKEDC Band A grid power with VAT (₦225.21) and several times more than Band B (₦65.58). The example ignores the cost of borrowing or of money tied up upfront, which makes solar look better than it is, and ignores future tariff rises, which makes it look worse. If you use less than the 3 kWh the system can deliver, for instance because batteries are already full by midday, your real cost per kWh is higher.

Where solar can make sense against the grid

  • Covering outage hours. If a generator runs during the hours the grid is off, the fair comparison for that energy is with generator fuel and maintenance, not with the grid tariff. Work out your own generator cost per kWh from your fuel receipts and run hours.
  • Band A feeders that underperform. If you pay ₦209.50 but get far fewer than 20 hours, you may be owed compensation or a downgrade; see EKEDC Band A shortfalls. Solar may still make sense for the gaps.
  • Small, essential loads. A modest system for lights, fans, phones and a router costs far less than one sized for air conditioning, and covers what matters during outages.
  • Businesses with daytime loads. A shop or office using power mainly in sunlight hours needs less battery storage per kWh used.

What to check first

  1. Your band on feederinfo.ekedp.com and the current rate on ekedp.com/tariff-plans.
  2. Your monthly kWh from your last few token receipts.
  3. Your current outage hours and generator spend.
  4. At least two written solar quotes stating usable daily output, battery type, warranties and what is excluded.
  5. Redo the example table with those numbers.

Our guides to budgeting for electricity in Lagos and the EKEDC tariff by band help with the grid side.

Where Pryme fits

If you are saving towards a system rather than paying upfront, a Flexible or Fixed Savings Box in the Pryme app (Savings Boxes) keeps that money separate from everyday spending; rates are shown in the app.

Questions people ask

Is solar cheaper than NEPA light in Lagos?

Not per kWh on our example figures: Band A grid power costs about ₦225 per kWh with VAT, against roughly ₦274 to ₦365 for the example solar system. Solar competes better with generator fuel during outages.

How much does Band A light cost per unit with VAT?

On EKEDC, ₦209.50 per kWh plus 7.5% VAT, about ₦225.21, using the October 2026 tariff page.

Is there VAT on solar panels in Nigeria?

Forvis Mazars lists renewable energy equipment among items with VAT suspended under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. Confirm the treatment with your installer and the NRS.

How do I calculate solar cost per kWh?

Add the upfront cost, replacements and maintenance over the system's life, then divide by the usable kWh it will deliver over that period.
