Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bills

Moving house in EKEDC area: meter, debt and name change

Who owes the old electricity debt when you move in or out in the EKEDC area, what NERC's 2023 rules say, and a handover checklist for tenants.

The short answer

Under Regulation 29(3) of NERC's Customer Protection Regulations 2023, electricity debt cannot be transferred to a new occupant; EKEDC has to pursue the former customer. So a tenant moving in should not pay the last occupant's arrears, but should record the meter reading or credit on day one and ask EKEDC to change the account name. A tenant moving out should settle the final bill and keep proof.

The rule on old debt

NERC's Customer Protection Regulations 2023 govern how Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDC) deals with its customers. A May 2024 summary by the law firm Tope Adebayo LP explains that under Regulation 29(3), electricity bill debt cannot be transferred to a new occupant, and that the DisCo must go after the former customer instead. That is the single most useful sentence for anyone moving into a flat with a history. This is information, not legal advice; the full text is on NERC's website.

It does not mean a meter or account can never carry a balance. It means that balance is not your debt if it was run up before you arrived, and you can refuse to pay it.

Moving in: a day-one checklist

  1. Find the meter number (prepaid) or account number (postpaid). See how to find your EKEDC meter or account number.
  2. Photograph the meter display showing the units left (prepaid) or the reading (postpaid), with the date.
  3. Ask the landlord or agent for the last token receipts or the last bill and any statement of debt.
  4. Buy a small first token and check the receipt. If it shows a deduction for arrears, note the amount; that is the clearest sign of inherited debt.
  5. Ask EKEDC to change the name on the account. Call 0708 067 1170 or 0700 123 5666 (Monday to Saturday, 8.00am to 6.00pm, per EKEDC's site) to ask what documents are needed, or use the Register Your Complaint page on ekedp.com for a written request.
  6. If you are told to pay old arrears, put your objection in writing and cite Regulation 29(3).

Worked example

Example: you move into a flat in Festac on 1 November. Your first ₦10,000 token receipt shows ₦3,000 deducted as debt recovery, leaving ₦7,000 for energy. You photograph the receipt and the meter reading, then write to EKEDC asking for the ₦3,000 to be credited back to the meter and the arrears to be pursued against the previous occupant under Regulation 29(3). Keep every receipt until the matter is closed.

Moving out: protect yourself

  • Postpaid: ask EKEDC for a final reading and final bill on your move-out date, pay it through an official channel, and keep the receipt.
  • Prepaid: photograph the meter showing units left. Agree with the landlord whether you will be reimbursed for unused units; this is a private arrangement, not something EKEDC refunds.
  • Give EKEDC your new contact details so a final bill reaches you; bills can be sent by SMS or email under Regulations 20(2)(b) and 31(1), as summarised.
  • Hand the meter receipts and last bill to the landlord or incoming tenant, and keep copies.

Remember the rule cuts both ways. If you leave unpaid bills behind, EKEDC can pursue you as the former customer.

Changing the name on the account

A name change matters most for postpaid accounts, where the bill is a record of who is responsible. On a prepaid meter you can buy tokens without it, but a correct name helps if there is ever a dispute, a meter fault or an inherited-debt deduction. EKEDC's website did not set out its change-of-occupancy documents on the pages we read, so ask the care line for the current list. Have your identification, your tenancy agreement or proof of ownership, and the meter or account number to hand when you ask, so the agent can tell you exactly what is missing.

Shared meters and landlord-controlled meters

Many Lagos compounds have one meter for several flats, or a landlord who buys the tokens and recovers costs. EKEDC's account is with whoever is named on the meter, usually the landlord. Your protection there is the tenancy agreement, so write down how electricity is charged, how often and on what evidence. Our wider guide to settling meter, water and waste bills when moving flat in Lagos covers the other utilities.

If EKEDC insists you pay

Complain in writing and ask for a reference. If the response does not resolve it, escalate to the NERC Forum office for Eko; see how to complain about your DisCo and escalate to NERC. If you are disconnected because of a previous occupant's debt, say so and ask for compensation, which under Regulation 26 is paid in energy credits.

Where Pryme fits

A clean paper trail wins most handover disputes. If you pay through Pryme's bills feature, you can generate a verifiable receipt or statement with VerifyDoc.ai to show EKEDC or a landlord exactly what you paid and when.

Questions people ask

Am I responsible for the previous tenant's NEPA bill?

No. Regulation 29(3) of NERC's Customer Protection Regulations 2023 says electricity debt cannot be transferred to a new occupant.

How do I change the name on my EKEDC meter?

Call 0708 067 1170 or 0700 123 5666 to ask for the current document list, or submit a written request through the complaint page on ekedp.com.

My token receipt shows debt deduction. What do I do?

Note the amount, keep the receipt, and write to EKEDC stating the debt predates your occupancy and asking for it to be credited back.

Will EKEDC refund my unused units when I move out?

Units stay on the meter. Any reimbursement is a matter to agree with your landlord or the incoming tenant.
