Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Ecobank dollar card and naira card limits abroad

Which Ecobank cards exist for spending abroad, what its own pages say about fees and limits, and what to confirm before you travel.

The short answer

Ecobank Nigeria's card range includes debit cards (Classic, Advantage, Premier and a Regional card), a pan-African card it says works in 36 African countries, credit cards and prepaid cards, including a USD prepaid card listed in its cards menu. The pages we could read in October 2026 do not publish a current issuance fee or a foreign spending cap for naira cards, so confirm both in the app or at a branch before you travel.

The Ecobank cards that matter for travel

Ecobank's Nigeria site groups cards into debit, credit and prepaid, with Visa and Mastercard sections and a separate page for the pan-African card. For someone planning to pay abroad, the useful question is which currency the card draws from.

CardWhat Ecobank saysDraws from
Classic, Advantage, Premier debit cardsIssued with the matching personal account; Ecobank says you receive a debit card when you sign up for personal bankingYour naira account
Regional debit card"Manage your money while working away from your home country"Linked account
Pan African Card (PAC)Available in 36 African countriesCard balance (check the currency on application)
USD prepaid cardListed under prepaid cards in the Nigeria cards menuA dollar balance you load
Cash Xpress prepaid cardCan be issued and reloaded at Xpress PointsA loaded balance

Ecobank's help FAQs add that you can withdraw from another African country where Ecobank operates, but in that country's local currency.

Naira card abroad: what is and is not published

Whether a naira card works abroad, and for how much, depends on the issuing bank's current policy within CBN foreign exchange rules. We did not find a current limit on Ecobank's own pages when we checked in October 2026. Because that figure can change with little notice, do not rely on a limit quoted on a blog or forum.

  • Ask in the app or by calling 0700 500 0000 whether your naira debit card is enabled for international payments today.
  • Ask for the per-transaction, daily and monthly caps, and whether ATM cash abroad is allowed.
  • Ask what exchange rate the card uses and whether a foreign transaction fee is added.
  • Check that 3D Secure is active: Ecobank promotes 3D Secure as extra protection for online card payments.

Dollar card: how to judge the cost

The cost of a dollar card has three parts: issuing it, loading it, and using it. Ecobank's pages we could read do not print the current fees for the USD prepaid card, so ask for each one in writing.

Questions to ask Ecobank

  1. What is the issuance fee and is there a yearly or monthly maintenance fee?
  2. How do I load it: from my naira account at a quoted rate, or from a domiciliary account?
  3. Is there a spending cap per day or per month?
  4. What happens to unused dollars: can I move them to a domiciliary account?
  5. What is charged if a payment is declined or a merchant refunds me?

Before you travel

  • Save the contact centre number so you can block the card from abroad.
  • Carry a second way to pay in case one card is declined.
  • Keep receipts for large charges, in case you need to dispute one later.
  • Read cards, cash or a currency balance for a trip to compare the options side by side.

Naira card, dollar card or both

The choice turns on how predictable your spending is and where the money already sits.

SituationOption to look at firstWhy
Short trip within Africa where Ecobank operatesDebit card or pan-African cardEcobank says you can withdraw local currency in its other African markets
Paying a foreign website or subscriptionUSD prepaid card, if its fees suit youYou load a fixed amount and spend only that
Long stay with large bills (school fees, rent)A bank transfer from a domiciliary accountCards may carry caps that are too low for large one-off payments
Unclear whether the naira card works abroadAsk Ecobank before you leaveCaps and permissions are set by the bank and can change

A prepaid card limits what you can lose if the card details are stolen, because only the loaded balance is at risk. A debit card linked to your main naira account exposes the whole account balance, which is one reason to keep international use switched off on it when you are not travelling, if your app allows that.

Whatever you choose, test the card with a small online payment before you leave, so a problem shows up at home rather than at a hotel desk.

Where Pryme fits

Some travellers prefer to hold a currency balance before they go. A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR; Swap shows the rate first and the fee on its own line, and nothing converts until you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's financial activities run through regulated partners. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Can I use Ecobank naira card abroad?

It depends on what Ecobank allows on your card today. Its pages did not state a current international limit in October 2026, so confirm in the app or on 0700 500 0000 before travelling.

Does Ecobank have a dollar card?

Yes, Ecobank Nigeria's cards menu lists a USD prepaid card alongside credit cards and a pan-African card. Ask for the current issuance and loading fees.

How much is Ecobank dollar card?

Ecobank's pages we could read did not print the current fee. Ask for the issuance fee, any maintenance fee and the loading rate before you apply.

Can I withdraw with my Ecobank card in Ghana or other African countries?

Ecobank's FAQs say you can withdraw in another African country where Ecobank operates, in that country's local currency.
