What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Driving on an international driving permit in the US

What an IDP from Nigeria does and does not do in the US, why validity depends on the state, and when residents must switch to a local licence.

The short answer

There is no single US rule on how long you can drive on an international driving permit (IDP) from Nigeria: each state sets its own. An IDP is a translation that only works alongside your valid Nigerian licence, and once you become a resident the state's deadline applies (30 days in New York and Georgia, up to 90 days after moving in Texas), whatever the IDP says.

Many Nigerians arrive in the US with an IDP in their luggage, on the advice that it lets them drive anywhere for a year. That advice is half right. An IDP can help, but it is not a licence, and how long it is useful depends on two things: which state you are in, and whether you are a visitor or a resident.

What an IDP is

An international driving permit is a booklet that translates the details of your national licence into several languages, in a standard format. IDPs are normally issued in the country that issued your licence, so plan to get one in Nigeria before you travel rather than in the US; check the issuing body's current process and fee before you rely on it. It has no value on its own: carry it with your valid Nigerian licence and passport. The validity period is printed on the permit; check it, and check that your Nigerian licence is valid for at least as long.

Because Nigerian licences are issued in English, many US officers can read them without a translation. The IDP is still useful as a recognised format when you hire a car or are stopped by police.

Visitors and residents are treated differently

State rules usually separate visitors, who may drive on a valid foreign licence, from residents, who must get a local licence within a set time. What we found on official state pages in October 2026:

The pattern is clear: an IDP does not extend a resident's deadline. If you have moved to New York on a green card, your 30 days run from residency, and an IDP valid for a year does not change that. If you are in another state, check that state's DMV page, since rules differ.

Limits of an IDP in practice

  • It does not make you insurable on its own. Insurers price and accept drivers by their own rules; some will not insure a resident on a foreign licence.
  • It does not replace a US licence as ID. For flights and federal buildings you need a REAL ID-compliant card or a passport (see REAL ID for green card holders).
  • Car hire rules are the company's own. Ask the rental company before you book whether it accepts a Nigerian licence with an IDP and whether there is a young-driver or foreign-licence surcharge.
  • It is void if your licence is. An expired or suspended Nigerian licence makes the IDP worthless.

Worked example: student versus green card holder

Example only. Two friends land in New York in August, each with a Nigerian licence and an IDP.

  • Bisi is visiting for three weeks. She may drive on her valid Nigerian licence, carrying the IDP, and rents a car after checking the rental company's rules.
  • Kunle has moved on an immigrant visa. He is a resident from arrival, so he must get a New York licence within 30 days: written test, five-hour pre-licensing course and road test, with his Nigerian licence surrendered to the examiner when he passes.

Same documents, same city, very different obligations.

Students and temporary workers

F-1 students and H-1B workers are in a grey zone in some states, because they live in the state but are not permanent residents. States define residency for licensing in their own way, and some treat anyone who lives, works or studies there as a resident for licence purposes. Do not assume that a temporary visa lets you drive on a Nigerian licence and IDP for your whole programme. Check the DMV page for your state, and if in doubt, get the local licence: it also gives you a US photo ID, and insurers usually price a local licence more favourably than a foreign one.

What to check first

  1. Are you a visitor or a resident of the state? Students and workers should check how their state defines residency.
  2. What is the state deadline for residents to get a local licence?
  3. Is your Nigerian licence valid for your whole stay?
  4. Will your insurer and any rental company accept the licence and IDP?

How long is a Nigerian IDP valid in the US?
