Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bills

Diesel price today in Nigeria

Where today's diesel (AGO) price is shown, what the latest NBS price watch recorded by state, what moves the price, and how to estimate a fuel bill.

The short answer

Diesel (automotive gas oil, AGO) is sold at market prices that each filling station sets, so today's price is the one on the pump at stations near you. The latest NBS diesel price watch we could open, for October 2024, put the national average at ₦1,441.28 a litre, ranging from ₦1,200.71 in Ogun to ₦2,031.00 in Bauchi; use it as a dated benchmark, not today's price.

Diesel powers generators, trucks, buses and boreholes across Nigeria, so its price feeds into transport fares, food prices and business costs. Unlike a regulated tariff, there is no single official daily price; each seller sets its own, and prices can differ between neighbouring stations.

Where today's price is shown

  • The pump and the station's price board: the real price for today at that station.
  • Bulk suppliers: businesses buying by the drum or truck get quotes that differ from pump prices.
  • NBS: the monthly Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel) Price Watch on nigerianstat.gov.ng gives state, zone and national averages.

What the latest NBS figures show

NBS AGO Price WatchAverage per litre
National, October 2023₦1,004.98
National, September 2024₦1,418.83
National, October 2024₦1,441.28
Lagos, October 2024₦1,281.83
Abuja, October 2024₦1,421.10
Rivers, October 2024₦1,335.00
Highest: Bauchi, October 2024₦2,031.00
Lowest: Ogun, October 2024₦1,200.71

NBS reported a 43.41% year-on-year rise and a 1.58% month-on-month rise in October 2024. By zone, the North-East was highest at ₦1,650.62 and the South-West lowest at ₦1,326.50.

What moves the diesel price

  • Supply: the volume available from refineries and imports, and any disruption to it.
  • Crude oil and the exchange rate: commonly cited drivers, since diesel is priced off international markets.
  • Distribution: trucking and handling from depots to stations; states far from supply points can pay more, as the gap between Bauchi and Ogun in October 2024 suggests.
  • Demand: heavy generator use during grid outages raises local demand.

Diesel and petrol compared

In October 2024, NBS averages put diesel at ₦1,441.28 a litre and, in its separate petrol report, petrol at ₦1,184.83. Diesel was therefore about ₦256 a litre dearer nationally. Diesel generators usually burn less fuel per hour than petrol ones of similar output, which is why many businesses still choose them despite the higher pump price. Compare cost per hour of running, not price per litre, when choosing between them.

Estimating your diesel bill

Example only. A shop runs a diesel generator that burns 1.5 litres an hour for 6 hours a day, 26 days a month.

Monthly litres
1.5 × 6 × 26 = 234 litres
At ₦1,441.28 (NBS national, October 2024)
234 × ₦1,441.28 = ₦337,260
At ₦1,281.83 (NBS Lagos, October 2024)
234 × ₦1,281.83 = ₦299,948
If today's local price is ₦1,600 (assumed)
234 × ₦1,600 = ₦374,400

Check your generator's fuel consumption from its manual or by filling the tank and timing how long it runs. Consumption depends on load, so running heavy equipment uses more per hour.

Ways to cut the bill

  • Match generator size to the load; an oversized generator wastes fuel.
  • Service it on schedule; dirty filters raise consumption.
  • Compare the cost per kWh of grid power on your tariff band, shown on your DisCo receipt, with your generator's cost per hour.
  • Buy from stations with accurate pumps, and watch the meter reset to zero.

Reading the NBS numbers

NBS collects pump prices across states and averages them, so a state figure is a typical price, not the price at your nearest station. In October 2024 the Lagos average (₦1,281.83) was about ₦159 below the national average (₦1,441.28), while Abuja (₦1,421.10) was close to it. The Lagos figure was also slightly lower than in September 2024 (₦1,305.56), even as the national average rose, which shows that states can move in different directions in the same month.

Buying diesel in bulk

  • Ask for the price per litre, not per drum, and confirm the drum volume.
  • Check that the supplier is a registered business and get an invoice.
  • Inspect for water or dirt; contaminated diesel damages engines and costs more than any saving.
  • Pay by transfer to a business account so there is a record.

What to check first

  1. Check the pump price at two or three stations.
  2. Look up the latest NBS state average for context.
  3. Work out your monthly litres from actual use.
  4. Budget at a price above today's, to absorb rises.

Where Pryme fits

Businesses can keep a fuel budget separate from trading cash in a Pryme Business Account, and pay suppliers by transfer for a clear record using bulk payouts or send money. Where the grid is available, buying tokens through electricity bills makes the comparison with diesel easy to track. See also generator fuel cost per month and petrol price history.

Questions people ask

What is the price of diesel today in Nigeria?

Check the pump at stations near you, as each sets its own price. NBS's latest diesel price watch we could open, October 2024, averaged ₦1,441.28 a litre nationally.

Which state has the cheapest diesel?

In NBS's October 2024 report, Ogun had the lowest average at ₦1,200.71 a litre, followed by Kaduna and Ekiti. Rankings change month to month.

How much is diesel per litre in Lagos?

NBS recorded a Lagos average of ₦1,281.83 a litre in October 2024. Today's price is on the pump.

How much diesel does a generator use?

It depends on size and load. Check the manual or time a full tank; our example of 1.5 litres an hour for 6 hours over 26 days uses 234 litres a month.
