Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Lagos

December in Lagos: a spending plan that survives January

Visitors, owambes, concerts and travel make December costly in Lagos. A week-by-week plan, and where Loans on Spaces fits and where it does not.

The short answer

December in Lagos is expensive because hosting, events, gifts, travel and eating out all land in the same few weeks, followed by January rent and school fees. Plan it in October with a fixed festive budget split by category, pay most of it from savings, and use Loans on Spaces only for planned purchases from Spaces merchants with a repayment date that does not collide with January's bills.

Why December hits Lagos harder

Lagos in December is a different city. Relatives and friends return from abroad and from other states; weddings, end-of-year parties, concerts and church programmes fill every weekend; restaurants, beaches and hotels on the Island and in Lekki are at their fullest; and traffic slows everything down, which pushes up ride fares. For anyone who lives here, the season brings more invitations and more visitors to host.

The real danger is the month after. In January, school fees for second term fall due, many annual rents renew, and salaries do not stretch any further. A December plan has to protect January as much as it funds the celebrations.

Start in October: set the festive budget

Decide one festive figure for December and split it. A worked example for a family of four in Festac follows. The figures are examples only.

CategoryExample budgetHow it will be paid
Christmas food and drinks₦150,000Savings, part on Loans on Spaces at a Spaces grocery merchant
Hosting visitors₦60,000Savings
Gifts and envelopes for family₦80,000Savings, cash
Outings: cinema, a meal out, a beach day₦70,000Savings; cinema and eateries in Spaces if useful
Clothes and grooming for events₦60,000Savings; salon in Spaces if useful
Transport across the city₦40,000Cash, Cowry
Example total₦460,000

Next to each line, write where the money comes from. That one column stops the budget being a wish list.

A week-by-week plan

  1. October: fix the total, open a savings box for it, and move a set amount each payday.
  2. Early November: book anything that sells out or rises in price later: interstate travel, a hotel for a family event, salon appointments.
  3. Late November: buy non-perishable food and drinks while shelves are full and before the last-minute rush.
  4. First half of December: host and attend events within each category limit; check what is left every weekend.
  5. Christmas week: buy fresh food; keep a buffer for the unexpected visitor or extra transport.
  6. Last week of December: stop spending from the festive budget and set aside January's fees and rent.

Where Loans on Spaces fits, and where it does not

Loans on Spaces and Spaces merchants are available in Lagos. The credit is lent by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank and can only be spent with Spaces merchants in sectors such as grocery and retail, eateries, cinemas, salons, transport and hotels. A limit is offered based on how your account is run, and the agreement is shown in full before you accept.

Fits
A planned bulk food shop at a Spaces grocery merchant, tickets for a family outing at a Spaces cinema, or interstate tickets with a Spaces transport operator, each with repayment after a salary that is certain.
Does not fit
Cash gifts, envelopes at parties, market stalls or anything outside Spaces. These come from your own money.
Watch out
A repayment date in mid-January, when fees and rent land. Choose a date that leaves room for them, or borrow less.

Our national guide to Christmas and Sallah shopping on credit covers the wider rules.

Hidden December costs in Lagos

  • Restaurant and hotel bills in Lagos carry a 5% state consumption tax on top of menu or room prices, and event venues with charged facilities fall under the same law.
  • Ride fares rise with traffic and late hours; share rides home from events.
  • Prepaid electricity runs down faster with visitors at home; top up before guests arrive.
  • Visitors from abroad may want to change money. Encourage them to use regulated channels and to keep receipts.

Hosting visitors without carrying the whole bill

Hosting is often the largest December cost that nobody budgets for. A relative arriving from London or Houston for two weeks means more food, more electricity, more trips to the airport at Ikeja and more outings. Most visitors are happy to contribute if asked early and plainly. Agree before they arrive who pays for what: perhaps you cover the house and meals, and they cover their own outings and any hotel nights for events on the Island. Write the plan in a message so nobody is embarrassed later. If they want to pay towards shopping, they can send money to you before they travel, so it is ready when they land rather than arranged in a hurry at the airport.

Where Pryme fits

A Flexible Savings Box in your Pryme Personal Account can hold the festive budget from October, and your Personal Assistant can tell you what is left in each category before you spend. Family abroad can send you GBP, USD or EUR, which stays in that currency until you choose to Swap. If you have a Loans on Spaces offer, you can use it with Spaces merchants across Lagos once you have read and accepted the agreement. For saving ahead, see how to save for December.

Questions people ask

How much should I budget for December in Lagos?

There is no single figure. Set one total in October, split it by category, and make sure January's fees and rent are protected first.

Can I buy Christmas food on credit in Lagos?

Yes, at grocery merchants in Spaces, if you have a Loans on Spaces offer and accept the agreement shown in the app.

Why is Lagos so expensive in December?

Demand rises for food, events, travel, hotels and transport at the same time, and traffic pushes up ride fares.

How do I avoid being broke in January?

Set aside January's rent and school fees before December starts, and stop festive spending in the last week of the year.
