Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Christmas and Sallah shopping on credit: a planning guide

Festive seasons bring big food and gift bills and a long January. How to plan the shopping, decide what to put on credit and repay without strain.

The short answer

Plan festive shopping weeks ahead, buy staples early before prices peak, and use credit only for a fixed list you can repay from income that will arrive soon after the holiday. The most common mistake is borrowing in December with a repayment date that lands in a cash-poor January.

Why festive shopping strains budgets

Christmas, Eid el-Fitr, Eid el-Kabir and New Year bring larger meals, guests, travel, new clothes and gifts, all in the same few weeks. Demand rises and so do prices in many markets. For many workers, December pay also arrives early, which means a long wait until the next salary at the end of January.

That combination is why festive credit can feel easy in December and heavy a month later. A plan that starts before the season helps more than any loan.

Start with a festive list and a ceiling

Write down everything the season will cost, then set one ceiling for the whole thing. A useful split:

CategoryExamplesTip
Food for the dayRice, chicken or goat, drinks, oil, spicesBuy dry staples early
Guests and visitorsExtra drinks, snacks, takeaway packsSet a number of guests
Gifts and hampersChildren's gifts, staff or family hampersFix an amount per person
ClothingOutfits, shoes, sewingOrder from tailors early
TravelBus or flight homeBook ahead

Buy early where you can

Dry goods such as rice, flour, oil and canned items keep well, so they can be bought in November or early December before the rush. Fresh items such as meat, tomatoes and pepper are better bought close to the day. Spreading purchases this way also spreads the cash out, which can mean you need less credit, or none.

What to put on credit, and what not to

  • Reasonable: a fixed food shop for the day itself, at a known price, with repayment due after your next salary.
  • Reasonable: a planned hamper or bulk purchase you would buy anyway, where the price is better now.
  • Avoid: open-ended spending on outings, drinks and impulse gifts.
  • Avoid: any credit with a repayment date in early January if your next pay is not until late January.

A worked example

These figures are illustrative examples only, not Pryme rates or limits.

Item (example)Amount
December salary, paid on the 20th₦400,000
Usual December costs (rent share, bills, transport)₦220,000
Festive list ceiling₦200,000
Cash available for festive list₦180,000
Gap₦20,000
Next salary31 January

Chioma's festive gap is ₦20,000. She could borrow it, but the January repayment will compete with school fees and rent. Instead, she trims the hamper list by ₦15,000 and buys rice and oil in November from her November pay, which closes the gap. If she had still been short, borrowing the smaller remaining amount with repayment after 31 January would have been the safer option.

Watch the price at the till

Busy seasons bring promotions, bundle offers and crowded checkouts. Under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, prices displayed should be the same as the price you pay at the point of payment, and businesses must not make misleading claims about their goods. Compare the shelf price with what you are charged, check bundle offers against the single-item price, and keep the receipt in case you need to return something. Consumers can also examine goods before completing a purchase, which matters for perishables bought in a rush.

Travel and visiting home

For many families the biggest festive cost is not food but the journey home. Fares often rise close to the holidays, so booking early saves money and removes a large, uncertain cost from the December budget. Count transport for the whole family both ways, plus anything you will carry or send ahead, and add it to the ceiling before you plan gifts and food. If travel takes up more of the budget than expected, trim the list rather than adding credit.

Gifts and contributions

Gifts, family contributions and office hampers are where budgets slip. Agree amounts with family or colleagues early. If you are collecting money for a group purchase, have everyone pay by transfer and keep a record of who has paid. If you buy a hamper for an employer or client, ask the seller for an itemised receipt, which the FCCPC says consumers can request.

Planning January now

Our guide to saving when inflation is high covers building a festive fund across the year.

  • List January's fixed costs before you spend in December.
  • Move a set amount into savings on the day December pay arrives.
  • Pay electricity and cable before the holiday so they do not fall due at a bad moment. See electricity bills in the app.
  • Avoid new credit in January unless it is for a necessity.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme customers may be offered Loans on Spaces, credit lent by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank that can only be spent with merchants in Spaces, including grocery and retail businesses. You see the amount, the cost and the repayment date in full before you accept, which makes it easier to check the January question above. A Fixed or Flexible Savings Box can hold your festive fund from earlier in the year. For the everyday version of this plan, see monthly shopping on credit.

Questions people ask

Is it wise to borrow for Christmas shopping?

Only for a fixed list you can repay from income that arrives soon after, without leaving January short.

When is the best time to buy foodstuff for Christmas?

Dry staples can be bought weeks early. Fresh items are better bought close to the day.

How do I avoid being broke in January?

Plan January's fixed costs before December spending, save part of December pay as soon as it arrives, and avoid repayments due before your next salary.

Can I pay for Sallah shopping in instalments?

Some lenders and pay-later providers allow it. Check the total cost in naira and every repayment date first.
