Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Debt consolidation as a migrant: options and traps

How debt consolidation loans work for newcomers with thin credit files, why a longer term can cost more, and the secured-loan and fee traps.

The short answer

A debt consolidation loan pays off several debts with one new loan, which helps only if the total you repay falls and you stop borrowing on the cleared cards. As a newcomer with a short credit history you may be offered a higher rate or refused, and the two biggest traps are loans secured on your home and stretching the term so far that you pay more overall. Free debt advice should come before any paid service.

Debt builds up quickly in the first years abroad. Deposits, furniture, a car, flights home and money sent to family often land on credit cards and overdrafts before income catches up. A consolidation loan promises one payment instead of five. Sometimes that is the right move. Often it is not, and newcomers face extra hurdles that make the bad deals more likely.

How consolidation works

MoneyHelper, the UK government-backed guidance service, describes a consolidation loan as borrowing enough from one lender to clear overdrafts, credit cards and other loans, leaving you with one repayment. It suggests consolidation makes sense when it clears all the debts, the total payable falls, the interest is lower, fees do not cancel the saving, you can afford the repayments, and you use it to cut spending.

Unsecured and secured loans

An unsecured personal loan is not tied to any asset. A secured loan, often called a homeowner loan, is tied to your home, and MoneyHelper warns that missing repayments could mean losing it. Turning card debt, which cannot cost you your house, into debt that can, is a serious step. For secured loans, compare the APRC, which includes arrangement fees, not just the headline rate.

Why migrants are offered worse terms

  • A thin credit file. Credit reference agencies record only local history. A few months of accounts usually means the best advertised rates are out of reach.
  • Visa length. Some lenders limit the term to the time left on your visa, or decline time-limited visa holders.
  • Several recent applications. Each full application can leave a hard search on your file. Use eligibility checkers that leave only a soft search before applying.

If you are being declined everywhere, see what to do after a failed credit check before applying again.

The trap of a longer term: a worked example

Example only, with rounded figures. You owe £6,000 on cards at 24% APR and pay £300 a month. That clears the debt in about 26 months, and you pay about £7,740 in total. Now compare two consolidation loans at 12% APR:

Option (example)Monthly paymentTermTotal repaid
Keep paying cards at 24% APR£300about 26 monthsabout £7,740
Loan at 12% APR over 3 yearsabout £19936 monthsabout £7,174
Loan at 12% APR over 5 yearsabout £13360 monthsabout £8,008

The three-year loan saves money. The five-year loan has the lowest monthly payment but costs about £268 more than simply keeping up the card payments, despite the lower rate. MoneyHelper flags unusually low monthly payments as a possible sign of a bad deal. Before you sign, check the total amount payable on the loan agreement, not only the monthly figure.

Fees and other traps

  • Early repayment charges on the loans you are clearing.
  • Arrangement or broker fees. MoneyHelper lists upfront or consultation fees as a warning sign, and Advicenow's UK guide says "never pay for debt advice".
  • Running the cleared cards up again. If the limits stay open, consider closing or reducing them.
  • Products promising to repair your credit score instantly or make you debt-free overnight.
  • Borrowing from informal lenders in the community to clear formal debt. See community loan sharks abroad.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • What is the total amount payable over the whole term?
  • Are there early repayment charges on this loan and on the debts it clears?
  • Is the loan secured on anything?
  • Will the cards I clear be closed, or stay open?
  • Is anyone being paid a fee for arranging this, and how much?

Alternatives worth checking first

  1. A 0% balance transfer card, if your credit file allows it. Watch the transfer fee and clear the balance within the interest-free period.
  2. A debt management plan, arranged through a free debt adviser who negotiates with creditors.
  3. Breathing Space (England and Wales). GOV.UK describes up to 60 days in which creditors cannot take enforcement action or add most interest and charges, applied for through a debt adviser.
  4. A formal insolvency option. In Canada, for example, a consumer proposal is administered by a licensed insolvency trustee, covers debts up to $250,000 excluding a mortgage on your home, and lasts at most five years, according to the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy. These have lasting effects on your credit file and, in some cases, may matter for immigration applications; get advice first.

Free advice in the UK is available from StepChange (0800 138 1111) and National Debtline (0808 808 4000), as listed by Advicenow. Other countries have non-profit credit counselling services; check that any service is free and regulated before sharing details.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer consolidation loans abroad. What it can do is help you stop the debt from rebuilding: a multicurrency account lets you keep family support in a separate balance from your bills, and the Personal Assistant can remind you of repayment dates. For overdrafts and short-term borrowing costs, read what overdrafts and payday loans really cost abroad.

Questions people ask

Is debt consolidation a good idea for newcomers?

Only if the total you repay falls and you stop using the cleared cards. A thin credit file often means higher rates, so compare total cost, not monthly payment.

Can I get a debt consolidation loan on a work visa?

Some lenders lend to visa holders, sometimes limiting the term to the visa length; others decline. Use soft-search eligibility checkers first.

Should I take a secured loan to clear credit cards?

Be very cautious. A secured loan is tied to your home, which unsecured card debt is not.

Where can I get free debt advice in the UK?

StepChange (0800 138 1111) and National Debtline (0808 808 4000) are free. Advicenow advises never paying for debt advice.
