Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Kingdom

Days spent in Nigeria and UK residence: the 16 and 46-day tests

How the 16 and 46-day automatic overseas tests work for Nigerians splitting time with the UK, how midnight day counting works, and the traps in the count.

The short answer

Under the Statutory Residence Test you are automatically not UK resident for a tax year if you spend fewer than 16 days in the UK and were resident in at least one of the previous three years, or fewer than 46 days if you were resident in none of them. A day counts only if you are in the UK at midnight, with transit days excluded and a deeming rule that can add days back for people with strong UK ties.

If you spend most of the year in Lagos or Abuja and come to the UK for weddings, graduations or business, the number of nights you spend here may decide whether you are UK resident for tax. The Statutory Residence Test, in force since 6 April 2013, starts with simple day thresholds before it gets to anything complicated. Getting the count right is the whole game.

The automatic overseas tests

HMRC's RDR3 guidance sets out three tests. Meet any one and you are not UK resident for the tax year (6 April to 5 April), whatever your ties.

TestWho it applies toThreshold
FirstUK resident in one or more of the previous three tax yearsFewer than 16 days in the UK
SecondNot UK resident in any of the previous three tax yearsFewer than 46 days in the UK
ThirdWorking full-time overseasFewer than 91 UK days, fewer than 31 days working more than three hours in the UK, and no significant break from the overseas work

So someone who left London for Lagos two years ago is held to the tighter 16-day test, while a Nigerian who has never lived in the UK, or left more than three full tax years ago, has 46 days. "Fewer than" matters: 16 days fails the first test, 15 passes.

How a day is counted

  • Midnight rule. HMRC's SA109 notes say a day counts if you are in the UK at midnight. Land at Heathrow at 6pm and that day counts; leave on a 9am flight and that day does not.
  • Transit days. A day travelling from one country outside the UK to another, passing through the UK, is a transit day and is not counted.
  • Exceptional circumstances. Days spent in the UK only because of exceptional circumstances beyond your control can be left out, up to a maximum of 60 days in a year; HMRC's RDR3 guidance explains what qualifies.
  • Deeming rule. If you were UK resident in one or more of the previous three years, have at least three UK ties, and are in the UK on more than 30 days without being here at midnight, some of those days are counted anyway.

Worked example

Example only. Chidi left Manchester for Abuja in 2024 and was UK resident in 2023 to 2024, so the 16-day test applies to him. In 2026 to 2027 he makes three trips:

  1. Arrives Sunday evening, leaves the following Saturday morning: in the UK at midnight on Sunday to Friday, six days.
  2. Arrives Thursday afternoon, leaves on a flight in the early hours of Tuesday: in the UK at midnight on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, five days.
  3. Lands at 7am and flies on to Toronto at 9pm the same day: he is not in the UK at midnight, so the day does not count, and as a day travelling between two other countries it is also a transit day.

Total: 11 days, under 16, so Chidi passes the first automatic overseas test and is not UK resident for 2026 to 2027. One more five-night trip would push him to 16 and fail the test, and he would then need the rest of the Statutory Residence Test.

If you miss the automatic tests

Failing an automatic overseas test does not make you UK resident. RDR3 next checks the automatic UK tests (for example 183 days or more in the UK, or your only home being in the UK), and if none apply, the sufficient ties test. The five ties are family, accommodation, work (40 or more days working more than three hours in the UK, per the SA109 notes), 90-day and country; the country tie counts only if you were resident in one or more of the previous three years. The more ties you have, the fewer days it takes to become resident:

UK daysResident in 1+ of previous 3 yearsResident in none
16 to 454 ties neededAlways non-resident (under 46)
46 to 903 ties4 ties
91 to 1202 ties3 ties
Over 1201 tie2 ties

Our full guide to the Statutory Residence Test for Nigerians covers the ties in detail. If you might come back within five years, also read the temporary non-residence rule.

Keeping a day log

Keep a simple record for each trip: arrival date and time, departure date and time, the purpose, and whether you worked. Keep boarding passes, e-tickets and hotel receipts. If you need to file, the day total goes in box 10 of the SA109 residence pages and transit days in box 11.1. Nigerian tax residence is a separate test with its own rules; see Nigerian tax residence after moving.

Where Pryme fits

Card and account activity is one of the simplest ways to reconstruct where you were. A Pryme account works from Nigeria and the UK with GBP and NGN in one place, and dated statements can be produced as verifiable documents through VerifyDoc.ai if an adviser needs them.

Questions people ask

How many days can I spend in the UK without being tax resident?

If you were UK resident in any of the previous three tax years, fewer than 16 days makes you automatically non-resident. If you were not, the limit is fewer than 46 days. Above those, the ties test decides.

Does the day I arrive in the UK count?

Yes, if you are still in the UK at midnight. The day you leave counts only if you are here at midnight that day, which usually you are not.

Does a connecting flight through Heathrow count as a UK day?

Not if it is a transit day: travelling between two other countries without staying past midnight.

What happens if I spend 20 days in the UK?

You fail the 16-day test if you were recently resident, but you are not automatically resident. The sufficient ties test then applies; with 16 to 45 days you would need four ties to be resident.
