Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

How interest on a Nigerian credit card is calculated

Pay the full statement balance and you usually pay no interest on purchases. Carry a balance and interest runs daily. See the minimum payment trap.

The short answer

On most Nigerian bank credit cards, if you pay the full statement balance by the due date you pay no interest on purchases; if you carry any balance, interest is charged on it, usually at a monthly rate worked out daily. Paying only the minimum keeps most of the debt in place: in a labelled example, ₦300,000 at 3% a month repaid at 10% minimum takes about three years and costs about ₦113,000 in interest.

Credit cards issued by Nigerian banks work on a monthly statement cycle. Each card has its own rate, minimum payment and charges, set out in the card's terms and key facts; we do not quote any bank's figures here because they vary by card and change. What does not vary much is the mechanism, and once you understand it you can work out your own cost from your statement.

The statement cycle and the interest-free period

  1. Purchases are recorded through the statement period, usually about a month.
  2. At the end of the period the bank issues a statement showing the balance, the minimum payment and the due date.
  3. If you pay the whole statement balance by the due date, purchases on most cards attract no interest. The gap between a purchase and the due date is the interest-free or grace period.
  4. If you pay anything less than the full balance, interest is charged on what you carry, and on many cards the grace period on new purchases is lost until you clear the balance.

Cash withdrawals on a credit card are often treated differently, with interest from the day of withdrawal and a separate fee. Check your card's terms for this line specifically.

How the interest is worked out

Many cards quote a monthly rate and apply it to the average daily balance over the cycle. A monthly rate divided by roughly 30 gives a daily rate. Labelled example: at 3% a month, the daily rate is about 0.1%. Carrying ₦300,000 for a full 30-day cycle costs about ₦300,000 × 0.1% × 30 = ₦9,000 in interest. Paying part of it earlier in the cycle lowers the average daily balance, so it lowers the interest too.

Converted to a yearly figure, 3% a month is 36% simple or about 42.6% if interest compounds monthly; see how to convert a monthly rate to yearly.

The minimum payment trap

The minimum payment is designed to keep the account in good standing, not to clear the debt. Labelled example: a ₦300,000 balance at 3% a month, with a minimum of 10% of the balance or ₦5,000, whichever is higher, and no new spending.

Month (example)Interest addedMinimum paidBalance after
1₦9,000₦30,900₦278,100
2₦8,343₦28,644₦257,799
3₦7,734₦26,553₦238,979

Because the minimum shrinks as the balance shrinks, repayment slows. Paying only the minimum, the ₦300,000 takes about 36 months to clear and costs about ₦113,044 in interest, so about ₦413,044 in total. Paying a fixed ₦30,000 every month instead clears it in 13 months with about ₦62,026 in interest. The minimum payment more than doubles the time and adds over ₦51,000 in this example.

A quick rule for your own card

Divide your balance by the fixed amount you can pay each month to get a rough number of months, then add a margin for interest. If paying a fixed sum still leaves the debt running beyond a year, stop using the card for new spending until the balance is cleared, because new purchases on a card carrying a balance usually attract interest at once.

Other charges that change the cost

  • Annual or monthly card maintenance fees.
  • Late payment fees if the minimum is missed, which may also raise the rate under some terms.
  • Over-limit fees if spending goes above the credit limit.
  • Foreign-currency transaction charges on cards used for international payments.
  • Cash-advance fees, often a percentage of the amount withdrawn.

Add any of these that apply to the interest when working out what the card costs you. A card you clear in full each month can be close to free apart from fees; a card you carry a balance on is a loan, and should be compared with other loans on total cost.

Fees can also turn a card you thought was cheap into an expensive one. A card with a low rate but a high monthly maintenance charge can cost more than a card with a higher rate if you clear the balance every month and never pay interest.

Who regulates bank credit cards

Credit cards are issued by banks licensed by the CBN. A legal review of the FCCPC's 2025 consumer lending regulations notes that banks licensed under BOFIA are exempt from those regulations' scope, so your card terms and the CBN's consumer protection rules are the main reference. If you have a dispute with a card issuer, start with the bank's complaints channel. This is information, not legal advice.

What to check first on your statement

  • Statement balance and due date.
  • The monthly rate and how interest is calculated.
  • Whether cash withdrawals carry interest from day one.
  • The minimum payment formula.
  • Every fee line since your last statement.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not issue credit cards. Loans on Spaces, lent by Solid Allianze MFB and usable only with Spaces merchants, shows the cost and repayment date before you accept; we compare the two in Loans on Spaces vs a credit card.

Questions people ask

Do Nigerian credit cards charge interest if I pay in full?

On most cards, no interest is charged on purchases if you pay the full statement balance by the due date. Cash withdrawals may be charged from day one. Check your card's terms.

How is credit card interest calculated in Nigeria?

Usually a monthly rate applied to your average daily balance over the statement cycle. Your card's terms state the rate and method.

Is paying the minimum on a credit card bad?

It keeps the account in good standing but clears the debt slowly. In a labelled example, minimum payments took about three years to clear ₦300,000.

Can a credit card be cheaper than a loan app?

If you pay in full each month, it can cost little beyond fees. If you carry a balance, compare its monthly rate and fees with the loan app's total cost.
