Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How credit-builder loans work in Canada

A credit-builder loan holds the money until you have repaid it, so you pay to create a payment record. What it costs and when it helps a newcomer.

The short answer

A credit-builder loan is a small loan the lender keeps locked away, usually in a savings account or deposit, while you repay it in monthly instalments; you receive the money at the end. Its purpose is the payment record: if the lender reports to Equifax and TransUnion, each on-time instalment adds to your payment history, which the FCAC calls the most important part of your credit score. You pay interest or fees for that record, so it is worth it only when you have no other way to build a file.

Most Nigerians arrive in Canada with a credit file that is empty, not bad. Years of good borrowing at home do not cross over, because Canadian lenders read reports from the two Canadian bureaus, Equifax and TransUnion. A credit-builder loan is one of the products sold to fill that gap. This guide explains how it works, what it costs in a worked example, and when another route does the same job for less.

What a credit-builder loan is

The structure is the reverse of a normal loan. With a normal loan you get the money first and repay it later. With a credit-builder loan the lender sets the loan amount aside, typically in a locked savings account or term deposit in your name, and you make fixed monthly payments. When the last payment is made, the held money is released to you, sometimes with a little interest earned on the deposit.

Because the lender is holding the money, its risk is low, which is why these loans are offered to people with no Canadian history. Credit unions, some banks and a number of online firms sell them. The terms differ a great deal between providers, so read the agreement rather than the advert.

How the payments reach your credit file

A credit-builder loan only helps if the provider reports the account to a credit bureau. The FCAC says a Canadian credit report records, for each account, the date it was opened, the amount owed, and whether payments were made on time or missed. It also says payment history is "the most important part of your credit score". A loan that reports monthly therefore gives you a growing line of on-time payments.

  • Ask which bureaus it reports to. Some providers report to both Equifax and TransUnion, some to one. A lender checking the other bureau will not see it.
  • Late payments count against you. The FCAC says late or unpaid loans can stay on your report for up to 6 years. A credit-builder loan you cannot keep up with does more harm than having no loan.
  • Positive history lasts. Equifax keeps closed accounts paid in full for up to 10 years, and TransUnion keeps payment history for up to 20 years, according to the FCAC.
  • It adds a second type of credit. The FCAC notes that having only one type of credit product may lower your score. An instalment loan alongside a credit card shows you can manage both.

What it costs: a worked example

There is no standard price. Some providers charge interest, some a monthly or set-up fee, some both. The example below uses made-up figures to show how to work out the true cost; your own provider's agreement gives the real ones.

Example itemAmount (CAD)
Loan amount held for you$1,000
Monthly payment, 12 months$90
Total you pay in (12 x $90)$1,080
Set-up fee (example)$50
Total paid out of pocket$1,130
Released to you at the end$1,000
Net cost of the credit record$130

In this example you pay $130 for twelve months of reported on-time payments. If the held deposit earns interest, subtract it. If the provider lets you stop early, check whether the fee is refunded and how the early close is reported.

When it helps a newcomer, and when it does not

It can help when

  • You have no Canadian credit at all and a bank has declined you for a card.
  • You already have a card and want a second type of credit on your file.
  • You can spare the monthly payment from income without strain for the full term.

It is a poor fit when

  • You can get a secured or starter credit card. A card used lightly and paid in full each month builds the same payment record, often for no interest. See how a secured card works in Canada.
  • Your budget is tight, for example while you are still paying for rent deposits or supporting family at home. A missed payment stays for years.
  • You need the money now. You will not see it until the end of the term.

The FCAC also warns that each hard inquiry, such as a credit application, can affect your score. Apply for one product at a time rather than several in the same month.

What to check first

  1. Which bureaus the provider reports to, and how often.
  2. The total cost: interest, set-up fee, monthly fee and any early-closure charge.
  3. Where the money is held and whether it earns interest.
  4. What happens if you miss a payment: late fees, and when it is reported as late.
  5. Whether the provider is a regulated lender or credit union in your province.
  6. After three months, pull your own report to confirm the account appears. See how to check your Equifax and TransUnion scores.

If you had a strong record with Nigerian banks, keep statements and a bank reference; some Canadian lenders will look at them even though the bureaus will not. Our guide to using a Nigerian credit history in Canada covers this, and building a credit score from zero sets out the full plan.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer Canadian credit products. What it can do is keep your Nigerian commitments organised while you build credit here: one account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, and you can send money to family with the rate and fee shown before you approve, so the payments you owe in Canada are not squeezed by surprises at home.

Questions people ask

Is a credit-builder loan worth it for a new immigrant in Canada?

Only if you cannot get a secured or starter card, or want a second type of credit. You pay interest or fees for the payment record, so compare the total cost first.

Do credit-builder loans report to Equifax and TransUnion?

Many do, but not all report to both. Ask the provider which bureau it reports to before you sign; a loan that does not report does nothing for your score.

When do I get the money from a credit-builder loan?

At the end of the term, after your last payment. The lender holds it, usually in a locked savings account or deposit, until then.

What happens if I miss a credit-builder loan payment?

It can be reported as late. The FCAC says late or unpaid loans can stay on a Canadian credit report for up to 6 years.
