Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

CPP survivor benefit for a spouse living in Nigeria

A widow or widower in Nigeria can apply for the CPP survivor's pension. Who qualifies, how the amount is set, how to apply and what tax is withheld.

The short answer

Yes, in most cases. Service Canada's survivor's pension rules turn on the relationship (legal spouse, or common-law partner for at least a year) and on the deceased's CPP contributions, not on where the survivor lives, and Canada.ca's international page says CPP benefits can be paid to people living outside Canada. The survivor applies online through My Service Canada Account or on paper form ISP1300, and a non-resident survivor should expect Canadian non-resident tax, usually 25%, to be withheld from each payment.

When a Nigerian Canadian dies and the husband or wife is living in Lagos, Enugu or Abuja, the family often assumes the Canada Pension Plan stops at the border. It does not. The survivor's pension is earned by the person who paid into CPP, and the survivor claims it as a right attached to that record. This article sets out who qualifies, how Service Canada works out the amount, the paperwork a survivor in Nigeria needs, and the tax that comes off the top.

Who qualifies for the survivor's pension

Service Canada's survivor's pension page (modified 25 May 2026) sets these conditions:

  • You were the legal spouse or common-law partner of the deceased CPP contributor. A common-law partner is someone who lived with the contributor in a conjugal relationship for at least one year.
  • A separated legal spouse may qualify if the deceased had no common-law partner at the time of death.
  • A separated spouse whose CPP credit split was approved in January 2025 or later is not eligible, unless the couple reunited and lived together for 12 months or more immediately before the death.
  • Remarriage does not end the pension. If you are widowed more than once, only the larger survivor's pension is paid.

The page does not set a residence condition for the survivor, and it does not set a minimum contribution figure on the page itself; it says the amount depends on how much and for how long the contributor paid in. The separate Canada.ca international eligibility page (modified 16 Oct 2026) says CPP benefits can be paid outside Canada. That is different from Old Age Security, which has its own residence rules; see OAS if you retire to Nigeria.

Customary marriages and long-distance couples

Many Nigerian couples married under customary law, or lived apart for years while one worked in Canada. Service Canada decides whether the relationship meets its definition, and it can ask for evidence. If the marriage was customary, read whether a customary marriage is recognised in Canada before you apply, and gather proof of the marriage and of the relationship at the time of death.

How the amount is worked out

The survivor's pension is a share of the contributor's own CPP retirement pension, and the formula depends on the survivor's age at the time of the death:

Survivor's age at the contributor's deathWhat Service Canada pays
65 or older60% of the contributor's retirement pension
Under 65A flat-rate portion plus 37.5% of the contributor's retirement pension

If the survivor already receives another CPP benefit, such as their own retirement pension, the payments are combined under a ceiling; the total is not simply the two amounts added together. CPP enhancement is added on top. Service Canada publishes the current maximums on its CPP payment amounts table, which changes each January, so check that table rather than relying on a figure quoted by a relative or an agent.

Worked example (illustration only)

Example: a contributor in Brampton would have received a CPP retirement pension of $1,000 a month. The widow, aged 67 and living in Ibadan, qualifies for 60%, which is $600 a month. If 25% non-resident tax is withheld, $150 comes off and $450 is paid. These are illustrative numbers, not a forecast; the real figure is on Service Canada's decision letter.

How to apply from Nigeria

Service Canada offers two routes:

  1. Online, by signing in to My Service Canada Account (MSCA), completing the CPP survivor's pension form and uploading supporting documents. This needs the survivor's own access to MSCA.
  2. On paper, using form ISP1300 (survivor's pension and children's benefits application), with copies of documents, mailed to the address Service Canada lists. Write both the deceased's and your Social Insurance Number on every document.

A representative, such as a registered trustee, can apply in person, by mail or by phone, but not online. Copies of documents are usually accepted, though Service Canada may ask for originals or certified copies at any time; it publishes a separate form (ISP1730) for certifying copies. Typical supporting papers are the death certificate, the marriage certificate or proof of the common-law relationship, and the survivor's identity documents. Nigerian documents may need authentication before a Canadian office accepts them; see authenticating documents between Ontario and Nigeria.

Timing

  • Apply as soon as possible. Back payments cover up to 12 months (11 months plus the month you apply).
  • Payments start the month after the death at the earliest.
  • The first payment usually arrives about 6 to 12 weeks after Service Canada receives a complete application.

The same application can claim the CPP death benefit and benefits for the deceased's children under 25, if they qualify; Service Canada lists both as related benefits. Service Canada says it will not ask for your SIN, banking or other personal details by email, which is worth remembering when strangers in Nigeria offer to 'process' a Canadian pension for a fee.

Tax on a survivor's pension paid to Nigeria

The CRA lists CPP benefits among the payments subject to Part XIII non-resident tax. The usual rate is 25%, withheld by the payer, and a tax treaty can reduce it. In the Canada-Nigeria agreement signed in Abuja on 4 August 1992, Article 18 says pensions may be taxed in the country where they arise 'according to the law of that State' and sets no percentage cap, so the treaty does not appear to lower the 25% rate for pensions. Withheld Part XIII tax is final unless the survivor elects to file under section 217, which can produce a refund where total income is low. The full mechanics are in non-resident tax on CPP and OAS paid to Nigeria. Nigerian tax on the pension is a separate question for the Nigeria Revenue Service.

What to check first

  1. Confirm the deceased's SIN and that they contributed to CPP (their Statement of Contributions in MSCA shows this).
  2. Gather the death certificate, marriage or relationship evidence, and the survivor's ID, with certified copies where possible.
  3. Decide who will apply: the survivor online, or a representative on paper.
  4. Tell Service Canada the survivor lives in Nigeria so the correct non-resident tax is withheld.
  5. Decide how payments will be received; see getting CPP paid into a Nigerian bank.

Where Pryme fits

Once the pension reaches the survivor in Nigeria, a Pryme Personal account can hold it in naira, US dollars, pounds or euros, and Swap converts only when the survivor chooses, with the rate and fee shown before approval. A Personal Assistant can remind the survivor of bills and prepare payments for approval. This is information about how the benefit works, not legal or tax advice; Service Canada decides eligibility.

Questions people ask

Can a widow in Nigeria collect her late husband's CPP?

Yes, if she was his legal spouse or qualifying common-law partner and he contributed to CPP. Service Canada's survivor's pension page sets no residence condition, and Canada.ca says CPP benefits can be paid outside Canada.

How much is the CPP survivor's pension?

If the survivor is 65 or older, 60% of the contributor's retirement pension. Under 65, a flat-rate portion plus 37.5%. Current maximums are on Service Canada's CPP payment amounts table.

Which form do I use to apply for the survivor's pension from abroad?

Form ISP1300 on paper, mailed with copies of documents and both SINs on every page, or the online form in My Service Canada Account if the survivor has access.

Is tax deducted from CPP paid to someone in Nigeria?

Yes. CPP is Part XIII income for non-residents; the usual rate is 25%. The Canada-Nigeria agreement's pensions article sets no lower cap, so expect 25% unless the CRA tells you otherwise.
