Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Cowry card in Lagos: how cashless BRT, rail and ferry fares work

How the Cowry card and wallet work on Lagos BRT, Blue and Red Line trains and ferries, how to top up, and what the 2026 cashless rule means for you.

The short answer

Cowry is the payment system for Lagos State-regulated public transport, used on BRT buses, the Blue and Red Line trains and LAGFERRY ferries. You load money onto a Cowry card or the Cowry app and tap to pay. From 1 August 2026, LAMATA said Cowry is the only approved way to pay on the buses and trains it regulates, and paying or accepting cash can lead to prosecution.

What Cowry is

Cowry is a stored-value payment system run for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) by Touch and Pay Technologies. You hold a balance either on a physical Cowry card or in the Cowry mobile wallet, and you pay a fare by tapping the card or your phone on a validator. The same balance works across modes, so one top-up can cover a BRT ride from Ikorodu, a Blue Line trip from Marina and a ferry from Ikorodu to the Island.

Where you can use it

  • BRT buses on the state's bus rapid transit corridors.
  • Lagos Rail Mass Transit: the Blue Line and the Red Line.
  • LAGFERRY ferry services.
  • Some danfo and other regulated buses, as acceptance on regulated routes expands.

The 2026 cashless rule

LAMATA announced that from 1 August 2026, Cowry would be the only approved payment platform on the buses (including BRT) and the Blue and Red Line trains it regulates. Both passengers who pay cash and staff who accept it can be liable, and LAMATA's legal team warned that offenders convicted under the applicable laws could face prison terms of up to seven years. In practice this means you should not plan to pay a regulated fare with cash at all.

Getting and topping up a Cowry card

  1. Buy a card at a BRT terminal, a bus stop that sells cards, or a Blue or Red Line station. Alternatively, download the Cowry app to use your phone as the wallet.
  2. Top up at terminals and stations, at self-service kiosks, through the Cowry app, or through bill-payment menus in some banking apps that list the Lagos State Cowry card as a transport biller.
  3. Check your balance in the Cowry app or the Cowry customer platform, which also shows your trip history.
  4. Tap on the validator when you board or enter the station, as directed for that mode.

Card or phone?

Physical cardPhone wallet

Good forChildren, older relatives, daily commutersPeople who already pay with their phone
Top-upKiosks, stations, appsIn the app or via linked billers

If you buy a card for a child or a parent, keep the card number and the receipt for the purchase, and register it where the system allows, so a lost card is easier to deal with.

Budgeting with Cowry

A stored balance makes commuting costs visible. Top up a fixed amount each week rather than whenever the card runs low, and you will know your weekly transport figure. Our Lagos commute budget guide shows how to combine Cowry fares with danfo, keke and ride-hailing legs into one monthly number. For a national view, see how to budget for transport costs in Nigeria.

Avoiding problems

  • Top up before peak hours; queues at busy terminals can be long in the morning rush.
  • Keep a small buffer on the card so a missed top-up does not leave you stranded.
  • Buy cards only from official points. A card sold on the street may be fake or empty.
  • If a top-up made through an app does not show on the card, keep the receipt and reference and contact the app first.

If something goes wrong

Two problems come up most. The first is a double tap: the validator seems to fail, you tap again, and two fares leave the balance. Check your trip history in the Cowry app the same day and raise it with Cowry support or station staff while the details are fresh. The second is a top-up that does not arrive. If you paid at a kiosk, keep the printed slip; if you paid through a bank or fintech app, the transaction reference from that app is what support will ask for.

Occasional riders and visitors

If you only use the BRT or the train now and then, or you are visiting Lagos, a card with a small balance is enough. Buy it at the first station you use and top up only what you expect to spend that week. Remember that the first and last parts of many journeys, from the bus stop to the office or from the jetty to home, are on keke, danfo or ride-hailing, which may not accept Cowry. Budget for those legs separately.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not sell Cowry cards. What it can do is make the weekly top-up part of your plan: the Personal Assistant can remind you each Sunday to top up and track how much you spend on transport, and a Flexible Box in Savings Boxes can hold the month's transport money. Nothing moves until you approve it.

Questions people ask

Can I still pay cash on BRT in Lagos?

LAMATA said that from 1 August 2026, Cowry is the only approved payment on the buses and trains it regulates, and that paying or accepting cash can lead to prosecution.

Where can I buy a Cowry card in Lagos?

At BRT terminals, bus stops that sell cards, and Blue and Red Line stations. You can also use the Cowry app as a phone wallet.

Does the Cowry card work on the Lagos ferry?

Yes. Cowry is accepted on LAGFERRY services as well as BRT and the Blue and Red Line trains.

How do I check my Cowry balance?

Use the Cowry app or the Cowry customer platform, which show your balance and trip history. Kiosks at stations can also help.
