Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Converting USD to naira at the airport in Lagos: is it wise?

What to know before changing dollars at Lagos airport: licensed BDCs, how rates compare, Customs declaration, and safer ways to have naira on arrival.

The short answer

Changing a small amount at a CBN-licensed bureau de change at the airport is legal and can be handy, but it is rarely the best rate and carries the risks of handling cash in a busy arrival hall. The safer plan is to arrive with naira already in an account in your name, change only what you need for the first hours, and use a licensed operator if you do.

Who is allowed to change money

Only bureaux de change licensed by the CBN may buy and sell foreign currency to the public. TechCabal reported in December 2025 that the CBN had licensed 82 BDCs, 2 in Tier 1 and 80 in Tier 2, effective 27 November 2025, under its 2024 BDC guidelines; Tier 1 operators need ₦2 billion in capital and Tier 2 ₦500 million and are limited to one state. The same report says the list is published on cbn.gov.ng, only listed BDCs may operate, and unlicensed operation can attract a fine of up to ₦10 million plus ₦200,000 a day under BOFIA. Before handing over dollars, ask for the operator’s name and check it against the CBN list.

Licensed BDCs must also keep records. The CBN’s revised BDC guidelines (May 2024) require customer documents to be kept for at least six years and define a currency transaction report for transactions above $10,000. Expect to show your passport.

How airport rates compare

There is no single “airport rate”. Each operator sets its buying and selling price, and the gap between what it pays you for a dollar and what it charges to sell one is its margin. Airports are convenient, and convenience is usually priced in. Compare three numbers before you change anything:

  1. The official market rate published that morning (the CBN’s rate pages or a reputable news summary).
  2. The rate your bank or transfer app shows for converting into your naira account.
  3. The rate the airport operator offers, in naira per dollar, after any commission.

Worked example (illustrative figures)

RouteExample rateNaira for $500
Convert into your naira account before travel₦1,360₦680,000
Licensed BDC at the airport₦1,300₦650,000
Difference₦30,000

Check: 500 × 1,360 = 680,000; 500 × 1,300 = 650,000. On $500 the gap in this example is the cost of a decent meal; on $5,000 it is ₦300,000. That is why changing a small amount at the airport can be reasonable and changing your whole trip budget there usually is not.

The cash risks

  • Declaration. Nigerian Customs officers at Murtala Muhammed International Airport said in July 2025 that foreign currency above $10,000 must be declared on arrival or departure, without exception, and undeclared funds may be seized.
  • Unlicensed changers. People who approach you in the arrival hall or car park offering “better rates” are not on any list you can check. Short counts, fake notes and snatch theft are risks you cannot recover from.
  • Counting in public. Bundles of naira are bulky. Changing a large sum leaves you carrying it through the airport and into a car.

Old or damaged notes

Operators and banks can refuse dollar notes that are torn, marked or of older series, or offer a lower rate for small denominations. If you carry dollars for emergencies, bring clean notes and keep them flat. The operator’s own rules decide what it will accept, so ask before you queue.

Leaving Nigeria

The same thinking applies in reverse. Changing leftover naira back into dollars at the airport on the way out usually means another margin. If you will be back, keep the naira in your account for your next trip or for support at home.

Safer ways to land with naira

  • Pre-fund a naira account. Convert before you fly into an account in your own name, then pay by transfer or card in Nigeria. Our guide to building a naira stash for December shows how to spread conversions.
  • Ask your host to meet costs by transfer. Taxi, hotel and first-day costs can often be paid by bank transfer.
  • Change only the first few hours’ needs. If you must change cash, do it at a licensed BDC, for a small amount, and count it at the counter.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account opened from the US holds dollars and naira together, so you can convert before you travel with Swap, seeing the rate and fee before you approve, and land with naira ready to send to local accounts. Account security uses an authenticator app and a transaction PIN rather than SMS codes, which helps when you are switching SIM cards; see security.

Questions people ask

Is it legal to change dollars at Lagos airport?

Yes, at a CBN-licensed bureau de change. Only operators on the CBN’s list may buy and sell foreign currency to the public.

Do airport BDCs give a good rate?

Each sets its own rate, and convenience is usually priced in. Compare with your bank or app rate before changing more than a small amount.

How much dollars can I carry into Nigeria without declaring?

Customs officers said in July 2025 that amounts above $10,000 must be declared on arrival or departure.

Should I change money with people in the arrivals hall?

No. You cannot check their licence, and short counts, fake notes and theft are hard to recover from.
