Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

When to convert naira to rand: timing and cost for SA residents

How to time and cost a naira to rand conversion, why most routes convert twice through dollars, and how to compare quotes by what you receive.

The short answer

No one can predict the best day, but you can cut cost: most naira to rand routes convert twice, through dollars, so avoid adding a third step, convert what you need in rand when you need it, split large sums over several weeks, and compare providers on the rand you finally receive rather than headline rates.

There is no right day, but there is a right method

Nobody can tell you the best day to convert naira to rand. The naira has moved sharply against most currencies in recent years, and the rand also moves. What you can control is how many conversions you pay for, how you compare quotes, and how much you convert at once.

Avoid paying for two conversions

Few providers trade naira directly against rand. Many routes convert naira to dollars in Nigeria, then dollars to rand in South Africa. Each step has its own margin. Two common patterns:

RouteConversionsWhere the margin is
Naira bought into dollars, sent to SA, converted to rand on arrivalTwoNigerian bank or dealer, then SA bank
Dollars already held in a dom account, sent to SAOneSA bank on arrival
Dollars sent into an SA foreign currency account, converted laterOne, when you chooseSA bank when you convert

If you already hold dollars, you have already paid the first conversion. Sending those dollars and converting in South Africa means only one more. If your savings are in naira, you will pay two; the question is whether you can make each one cheaper.

Timing: practical rules

  • Convert what you need, when you need it. If you are moving, cover the first months of rand costs (deposit, rent, transport) and leave the rest until you see the rate.
  • Split large sums. Converting in two or three parts over several weeks averages the rate and avoids putting everything on one bad day.
  • Avoid weekends and holidays. Some providers widen quotes when markets are closed.
  • Mind Nigerian limits. Under the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, dom account transfers are up to $10,000 a day (TheCable, 3 June 2026), so large sums need several days anyway.

Worked example

Example with made-up rates, for arithmetic only. Tolu has ₦8,000,000 and is moving to Johannesburg. Suppose the naira buys dollars at ₦1,600 per dollar after the Nigerian bank's margin, and the SA bank converts dollars at R17.50 per dollar after its margin.

  1. ₦8,000,000 at ₦1,600 = $5,000.
  2. $5,000 sent by SWIFT; suppose $25 in charges, leaving $4,975.
  3. $4,975 at R17.50 = R87,062.50.

If Tolu converts only $2,000 on arrival and holds $2,975 in a foreign currency account, she still pays both margins on the $2,000, but keeps the choice of when to convert the rest. The total cost per conversion does not change; the date does.

How to compare quotes

  1. Get a mid-market reference for naira to dollars and dollars to rand at the same time as each quote.
  2. Ask each provider for the rate and every fee, in writing.
  3. Calculate what you receive at the end, in rand, for the same starting amount.
  4. Compare the end amounts, not the headline rates.

See why bank rates differ from Google for the method.

South African steps on arrival

Bring the money in through a bank. As a foreign national temporarily resident, you declare to your bank whether you hold foreign assets (SARB guidelines, section 5.1), and every inward payment needs a Balance of Payments reason. Keep records of where the money came from: section 5.2 allows funds accumulated during your stay to be transferred abroad later if the source is substantiated. See moving savings legally.

Common mistakes

  • Using a dealer who quotes a street rate. It may look better, but it gives you no recourse and leaves no bank record of where the money came from, which you may need when you later send funds out of South Africa.
  • Converting everything on the first day. One day's rate and one margin then apply to the whole sum.
  • Letting a card do the conversion. Paying in rand with a Nigerian naira card abroad converts at the card scheme and bank's rate, and Nigerian card limits on foreign spending can apply.
  • Forgetting the charges on each leg. A SWIFT fee, an intermediary fee and a receiving fee can apply to every transfer; fewer, larger transfers pay them fewer times, within the daily limits.
  • Ignoring the date you need rand. SWIFT payments are not instant; leave room before rent or a deposit is due.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR. Naira you plan to spend in Nigeria can stay in naira, and dollars can wait until you convert with Swap; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. See Swap.

Questions people ask

Should I convert naira to rand before or after moving?

Convert enough for your first months of rand costs and split the rest. Timing the market is not reliable.

Why does naira to rand go through dollars?

Few providers trade naira directly against rand, so many routes convert to dollars first, which adds a second margin.

Is it better to send dollars or rand?

If you already hold dollars, sending them and converting once in South Africa avoids an extra conversion.

How do I compare exchange quotes?

Ask for the rate and every fee, then compare the rand you would receive for the same starting amount.
