Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Abuja

Commuting costs in Abuja from satellite towns

How to work out and cut the cost of commuting into Abuja from Kubwa, Lugbe, Nyanya or Gwagwalada: taxis, buses, ride-hail, light rail and driving.

The short answer

For many Abuja workers, commuting from satellite towns such as Kubwa, Lugbe, Nyanya or Gwagwalada is the second-largest monthly cost after rent. Work out the true monthly figure, including the extra legs between districts, and cut it by sharing rides, using staff buses, travelling earlier and choosing routes that avoid repeated short trips.

Why commuting costs so much in Abuja

Housing in the city districts is expensive, so many people who work in the Central Business District, Wuse, Garki, Maitama or Utako live in satellite towns: Kubwa and Dutse along the Kubwa expressway, Lugbe and Gwagwalada along the airport road, Nyanya and Karu to the east, and Kuje and Bwari further out. Some cross the boundary and live in Mararaba in Nasarawa State. A daily round trip can be long, and fares climb when fuel prices rise.

The public options are limited. The Abuja light rail line connects the Central Business District with Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, with stations including Idu. Residents interviewed in early 2025 complained that it does not serve satellite towns such as Kubwa, Gwarinpa, Nyanya and Kuje, and FCT officials said expansion would come when funds allowed. For most commuters, roads remain the only route.

Your options and their trade-offs

ModeStrengthsWatch out for
Shared taxi or bus from a satellite townCheapest per tripLong waits at peak times; use painted, registered vehicles
Drop or ride-hailDoor to door, flexibleExpensive daily; prices rise in rain and peak hours
Staff busPredictable cost, often subsidisedFixed times; not every employer has one
Own carFlexible, can carry othersFuel, parking and maintenance; traffic on the expressways
Light railAvoids road trafficLimited route; check current fares and times
Okada or tricycleShort last-mile hops in suburbsBarred from the city centre and restricted areas

Safety matters as much as cost. The FCT Minister said in January 2024 that unpainted taxis and buses would be stopped, citing 'one chance' robberies in which criminals pose as drivers. Use vehicles in FCT colours with visible registration, especially early in the morning and after dark.

Work out your real monthly cost

Most people underestimate their commute because they count only the main leg. Include every part of the journey. Example figures only:

Leg (Kubwa to Utako, 22 working days)Example per dayExample per month
Walk or okada from estate to the expressway (suburb only)₦600₦13,200
Shared taxi Kubwa to Berger₦1,500₦33,000
Taxi Berger to Utako₦800₦17,600
Return journey₦2,900₦63,800
Total₦5,800₦127,600

On an example take-home pay of ₦450,000, that is more than a quarter of income. Seeing the full figure is the first step to cutting it. The national guide on budgeting for transport costs sets out the method.

Practical ways to cut the cost

  1. Share rides. Two or three colleagues from the same estate sharing a drop can pay less each than separate taxi legs.
  2. Ask about a staff bus. Many employers in the CBD and agencies run one; if yours does not, ask HR whether colleagues could share one.
  3. Leave earlier. Before the morning peak, waits are shorter and drivers charge less.
  4. Cut extra legs. If your route needs three changes, look for a single shared taxi that goes further, even at a higher fare.
  5. Work from home where allowed. One or two days a week can save a large share of the month's cost.
  6. Plan for the rainy season. From about April to October, fares and journey times rise. Keep a small buffer for those months.

If you drive: count the full cost

Driving from a satellite town feels cheaper than taxis because you pay for fuel in large amounts rather than fares every day. The full cost is higher than the fuel alone. Add up, for a month:

  • fuel, based on your actual distance and traffic, not the best case;
  • parking at work, if your office charges for it;
  • servicing and tyres, spread across the year;
  • insurance and vehicle papers, spread across the year;
  • repairs caused by potholes and flooded roads in the rainy season.

Once you have that figure, driving may still be the right choice, particularly if you can carry colleagues who share the fuel cost, or if your job needs you to move between districts during the day. But it is worth comparing with a staff bus or shared ride at least once a year, especially after a fuel price change.

If you carry passengers who contribute, agree the amount and how often they pay, and ask them to pay by transfer. It keeps the arrangement fair and avoids awkward conversations about money each week. It also gives you a record if the group changes.

Should you move closer to work?

Sometimes the commuting saving is bigger than the rent difference. Compare a year of commuting from your current home with the extra rent, agent and legal fees, and moving costs of a place nearer work. If you are planning a move, read our guide on rent month in Abuja first.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal Account can hold a monthly transport amount, and the Personal Assistant can remind you when it is running low. For larger, planned trips with transport companies that are Spaces merchants, Loans on Spaces may be offered, with the full cost shown before you accept. Our Abuja transport and Loans on Spaces guide explains what can and cannot be covered.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to commute from Kubwa to the city in Abuja?

It depends on your route and mode. Add up every leg, morning and evening, for a month; the example in this article shows how quickly small fares reach a large monthly sum.

Does the Abuja light rail go to Kubwa or Nyanya?

No. The line runs between the Central Business District and the airport. Residents have asked for extensions to satellite towns, which officials say depend on funding.

Are okadas allowed in Abuja?

Commercial motorcycles and tricycles are barred from the central city and restricted areas; they may provide last-mile services in designated suburbs.

How do I avoid one chance in Abuja?

Use painted, registered taxis or known ride-hail services, note the plate number, share your trip with someone and avoid empty-looking vehicles at night.
