Ten years, one trunk

2023Multicurrency

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Money scams common in Umuahia and how to avoid them

Fake alerts, land sold twice, fake Abia recruitment portals and loan agents: how each scam works in Umuahia and the checks to make before paying.

The short answer

The money scams that catch people in Umuahia mostly follow four patterns seen across Nigeria: fake transfer alerts at shops, land or rooms sold to more than one buyer, fake recruitment portals that charge for forms, and "loan agents" who take an upfront fee. Each one fails if you confirm money in your own account before releasing goods, verify land at the Ministry of Lands, check jobs only on official Abia channels, and never pay a fee to receive a loan.

Umuahia is a calmer city than Lagos or Aba, but the same tricks travel. A busy shop at closing time, a homecoming buyer in a hurry to own land, a graduate desperate for a state job: each is a target. Below are the common patterns, how they work, and the check that stops each one.

1. Fake transfer alerts

A buyer "transfers" money and shows you a screenshot or a forged SMS. The goods leave; the money never arrives. It works best when the shop is busy and the seller cannot check.

  • Check your balance in your own bank app, not the buyer's phone or an SMS.
  • For large sums, wait until the credit shows before goods leave.
  • Keep a single business account so credits are easy to see.
  • If money arrives by mistake and someone pressures you to return it to a different account, read our guide on wrong transfers first.

2. Land and room sold twice

A seller, sometimes a family member without authority, sells the same plot to two buyers, or an agent collects rent for a room that is already let. Buyers abroad and new arrivals are the usual targets.

  1. Get a registered surveyor's plan and ask the Ministry of Lands and Housing in Umuahia, through a lawyer, to confirm the survey red copy and any existing C of O.
  2. For family land, have the people with authority under custom sign, not one person.
  3. For rooms, meet the landlord, see their ID and pay into their own account.
  4. Get a receipt that names the property and the amount.

Abia's Small Claims Court, in Magistrates' Courts under practice directions from November 2023, handles money claims up to ₦5,000,000 with a 60-day target, which is a cheaper route to recover a deposit than a full suit. This is information, not legal advice.

3. Fake recruitment

In November 2023 an advert headed "Abia State Civil Service Commission Recruitment 2023/2024" spread on WhatsApp and Facebook. The state government declared it fake. Its media adviser said recruitment must be approved by the Governor and announced by the Civil Service Commission on BCA radio, other radio stations and major newspapers. The same pattern recurs with police, army and agency recruitment.

  • Check abiastate.gov.ng or the agency's own website.
  • Never pay for a form, a slot, a medical or a "processing fee" to an individual.
  • Be wary of links that do not end in an official government domain.

4. Loan agents and fake lenders

Someone offers a loan or a grant and asks for an "insurance", "processing" or "activation" fee first. Once paid, they vanish. Real lenders deduct charges from the loan or show them in the agreement you accept; they do not ask you to send money to get money. Before using a loan app, check the FCCPC's register of approved digital lenders on its website. The CBN also warns that it does not run lotteries, keep inheritance accounts or hold accounts for individuals, so any message promising a CBN payout is fraud.

5. Impersonation

Calls from "your bank", "EEDC" or a "government agency" asking for your PIN, OTP or BVN are scams. Banks do not ask for these. Abia's government has also warned of people posing as ASEPA waste officials; ask for ID and pay levies only through official channels. See our guide to fake bank customer care.

6. Contribution and investment schemes

Daily contribution collectors and "double your money" schemes both ask you to hand over cash on trust. A good contribution collector is known in the market, records every payment and pays out on time; a fraudulent one disappears before the payout date. Investment schemes that promise fixed high returns with little explanation usually pay early members from new members' money until they collapse. Ask who holds the money, whether the business is registered with the CAC, and whether it is licensed to take deposits or investments. If the answer is vague, keep your money.

If you have already paid

  1. Call your bank's official line at once and ask it to flag the transaction and the receiving account.
  2. Write down the date, time, amount, account name and number, and save screenshots and chat logs.
  3. Report to the nearest police division and get an extract; banks often ask for one.
  4. For a deposit paid to a known person, consider the Small Claims Court route.
  5. Warn family members, since scammers often try the same story on relatives.

What to check first

  • Has the money arrived in my own account?
  • Is this person who they say they are, and can I confirm through an official channel?
  • Am I being rushed?
  • Am I paying a fee to receive money?

Report fraud to your bank at once and to the police. For advance-fee fraud the CBN directs people to the EFCC or the Nigeria Police.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme accounts use an authenticator app instead of SMS codes, plus a transaction PIN (security). A verifiable receipt from VerifyDoc.ai lets anyone check that a receipt is genuine and unaltered, which helps against forged proof of payment. Read also Ponzi and investment scams.

Questions people ask

How do I know if a transfer alert is fake?

Check your balance in your own bank app. Do not rely on SMS, a screenshot or the buyer's phone. Release goods only when the credit shows.

Is the Abia State recruitment portal on WhatsApp real?

Treat it as fake unless you can find it on abiastate.gov.ng or hear it on BCA radio. The state has said genuine recruitment is announced through those channels and has disowned viral portals before.

How can I avoid buying land twice sold in Umuahia?

Use your own lawyer, get a registered survey plan, confirm the red copy and title at the Ministry of Lands, and get family consent in writing before paying.

Should I pay a fee to get a loan?

No. Fees asked upfront to release a loan are a common scam. Check that a lender is on the FCCPC register and read the agreement before accepting.
