Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Collecting Nigerian music royalties while living abroad

Streaming income comes through your distributor; licensing money in Nigeria goes through MCSN. Who collects what, and how payouts reach you abroad.

The short answer

Royalties from Nigerian use of your music arrive by two routes: streaming and download income through your distributor or label, and licensing income for broadcasts and public performance through a collective management organisation. As at July 2026 the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN) was described as the only CMO approved by the Nigerian Copyright Commission for musical works and sound recordings, with COSON's licence not renewed since 2019; check current status with the Commission's "Verify a CMO" service.

Many Nigerian artists, writers and producers now live in London, Houston or Toronto while their music is played on Nigerian radio, in clubs in Lekki and on Nigerian streaming accounts. Money from those uses does not arrive in one stream. Knowing which body collects what, and making sure each one can find and pay you, is how you stop royalties going uncollected.

The two sets of rights in a song

The composition
Melody and lyrics, owned by songwriters and their publishers. Earns when the song is performed, broadcast, reproduced or synced.
The sound recording
The specific recorded version, owned by whoever owns the master (artist or label). Earns when that recording is streamed, sold, broadcast or played in public.

If you wrote and own your recordings, you hold both sets and can be owed money from both routes. If you only sang on a label's record, your income depends on your contract with the label.

Who collects in Nigeria

Collective management organisations in Nigeria operate under approval from the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), which says it oversees the formation and operation of CMOs and offers a "Verify a CMO" service. A July 2026 analysis on the IPKat blog by Seun Lari-Williams states that MCSN was the only NCC-approved CMO for musical works and sound recordings, that COSON's licence had not been renewed since 2019, and that the House of Representatives moved on 10 June 2026 to investigate copyright administration. A January 2026 guide by Rosewood Legal on Mondaq describes MCSN as licensing and collecting for composition and recorded music and paying composers, lyricists, performers, producers and publishers.

Joining from abroad

The Rosewood Legal guide says that to collect, the artist registers as an MCSN member, and that MCSN registers works in other territories and licenses use abroad through partnerships. Practical points for someone outside Nigeria:

  1. Decide where your main society is. If you already belong to a society where you live, ask it whether it collects from Nigeria through a partnership and how Nigerian income reaches you. Joining two societies for the same rights in the same territory can cause conflicts, so check membership terms first.
  2. Register every work. Song title, writers and splits, publisher, and identifiers such as ISRC for recordings. Unregistered works cannot be matched to usage.
  3. Keep contact and payment details current. A society that cannot reach you will hold the money.
  4. Register copyright with the NCC if useful. Rosewood Legal notes registration is voluntary, since copyright exists once a work is fixed, but it gives you a dated record.

Splits and co-writers

Nigerian songs often have several writers and producers spread across Lagos and the diaspora. Agree splits in a short signed split sheet when the song is finished, and make sure every co-writer registers the same splits with their own society. Mismatched registrations are a common reason distributions are held back until the parties agree.

Streaming and distributor income

Streams on platforms used in Nigeria pay the master owner through the distributor or label that delivered the track. Your distributor's dashboard shows Nigerian streams and pays out to the account you set; it does not matter that you live abroad. What matters is that the payout method suits you: some pay only in dollars to particular wallets or banks. Check the distributor's own payout page for methods, currencies and thresholds; we have not listed any because they change and differ by provider.

Tax deducted on royalties

Under the Deduction of Tax at Source (Withholding) Regulations 2024, as summarised by PwC, royalties paid to non-resident individuals carry 5% and to non-resident companies 10%; the rate doubles without a valid tax number. Whether a CMO distribution is treated as a royalty payment subject to deduction is a question to put to the society. Your home country taxes royalty income under its own rules; where there is a treaty, such as the 1987 UK-Nigeria agreement, it caps source-country tax on royalties at 12.5% and gives credit for Nigerian tax. Keep each statement and receipt. This is information, not advice.

Steps to check this month

  • List every song with writers, splits and identifiers.
  • Confirm which society you belong to and which territories it covers.
  • Check the NCC's CMO verification for any Nigerian society you deal with.
  • Open each distributor dashboard and confirm the payout method and threshold.
  • Make sure your name matches across contracts, society records and your receiving account.

Where Pryme fits

If a Nigerian society, label or promoter pays you in naira, a Pryme account opened from any country gives you naira account details alongside pounds, dollars and euros. Money stays in naira until you convert with Swap, rate shown first. Statements and verifiable receipts through VerifyDoc.ai help when matching payments to royalty statements. See multicurrency accounts and getting WHT credit notes.

Questions people ask

Which society collects music royalties in Nigeria?

As at July 2026, MCSN was reported as the only NCC-approved CMO for musical works and sound recordings. Check current status on the NCC's Verify a CMO service.

Is COSON still collecting royalties?

A July 2026 IPKat analysis says COSON's licence has not been renewed since 2019. Confirm with the Nigerian Copyright Commission.

Can I join MCSN while living in the UK or US?

Membership is through MCSN's own process. If you already belong to a society abroad, ask it how it collects Nigerian income before joining another.

How are Nigerian streaming royalties paid to artists abroad?

Through your distributor or label, to the payout method you set on their dashboard, wherever you live.
