Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

How do I close my Nigerian bank account from Ghana?

Move the balance, clear any debts, then send a signed closure request with ID. Forms banks publish, what diaspora customers must add, and the fee.

The short answer

Most Nigerian banks close an account on a signed written request with valid ID, and the CBN Guide to Charges (2020) lists account closure as a charge that is waived. From Ghana, you usually move the balance first, then send the bank its closure form or a signed letter with your passport details; FirstBank publishes a separate diaspora closure form, and Access Bank’s form accepts a passport with visa or permit for diaspora customers.

After a few years in Ghana, many Nigerians find they are paying maintenance and SMS charges on accounts they no longer use. Closing an unused account tidies your finances and reduces the number of logins a fraudster could target. It can be done from Accra, but it takes a little planning, because a bank will not close an account that still has money, debts or active cards attached.

Before you ask: decide whether to close at all

An account you might need again, for receiving rent, family transfers or future investments, can be kept alive instead. Closing it and opening another later means fresh paperwork. See keeping a naira account active from Ghana. If you do close, keep at least one Nigerian account linked to your BVN.

Step 1: move the balance

  • Naira: transfer to another Nigerian account you keep, or to a family member, before closing.
  • Dollars in a domiciliary account: reports of the CBN's 2026 foreign exchange manual say ordinary domiciliary holders can send telegraphic transfers of up to US$10,000 per day, so a dollar balance can go to your Ghana FCA. See moving dollars from a dom account to Ghana.
  • Small leftover balances: ask the bank how it pays out the final amount (often a transfer to an account you name).

Step 2: clear what is attached

  • Repay any loan, overdraft or card balance; a bank will not close an account with debt.
  • Cancel standing orders, direct debits and bill mandates.
  • Return or destroy cards and unused cheque leaves, as the bank asks.
  • Ask for a final statement for your records before closure; you may need it for tax or visa history.

Step 3: send the closure request

Banks publish forms. Two examples:

BankWhat its documents show
FirstBankDownload page lists an "Account Closure Request" form and a separate "Account Closure Form (Diaspora)"
Access BankAccount Management Request Form covers closure (reason, ID); diaspora customers may use a passport with visa or a notarised permit

Other banks may accept a signed letter with your account number, full name, reason for closing, the account to receive any final balance, and a copy of your passport data page. Ask the bank's diaspora desk or contact centre which channel it accepts: email from your registered address, upload in the app, or a branch visit by someone you authorise. If the bank wants your signature verified, a notary in Ghana can witness it; see notarising in Ghana for use in Nigeria. Bank-specific steps are in our Nigeria library, for example closing a GTBank account.

Joint, business and dormant accounts

A joint account usually needs every signatory to sign the closure request, so plan for a co-holder in Nigeria to sign there and for you to sign in Ghana. A business account follows the company's mandate and may need a board resolution. An account that has already gone dormant may first need reactivation: Access Bank's Account Management Request Form lists dormant reactivation separately (reason, ID, utility bill, compliance form) from closure. Ask the bank whether it can close a dormant account directly or needs it reactivated first.

Fees

The CBN's Guide to Charges by Banks (effective 1 January 2020) lists account closure as waived (item 11.2). Charges already incurred, such as maintenance or SMS fees up to closure, may still be deducted. If a bank tries to charge a closure fee, ask it to point to the item in the Guide.

After closure

  1. Get written confirmation that the account is closed.
  2. Check that no further debits appear on any linked card.
  3. Update anyone who pays into the account.
  4. Keep the confirmation with your records.

Keep the confirmation for several years. If a debit ever appears later, or a credit bureau shows the account as open, the bank's written confirmation is the quickest way to resolve it, and it helps when you explain your banking history to a new lender in Ghana or Nigeria.

If an account goes quiet without being closed, it may become dormant; Access Bank, for example, publishes lists of dormant accounts and of balances remitted to the CBN, as the CBN requires; closing deliberately avoids that uncertainty.

If you are closing a domiciliary account, ask what happens to any dollar balance below the bank's minimum transfer amount; some banks pay it in naira at their own rate. Moving everything except a small amount before closure, then asking the bank to pay the remainder to a named account, avoids being left with a balance that cannot be sent cheaply.

Where Pryme fits

If you are consolidating, a Pryme account can be opened from Ghana and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR in one place, so you can close accounts you do not use and keep one for Nigerian payments. See how Pryme works.

Questions people ask

Can I close my Nigerian bank account online?

Some banks accept closure by email or in the app; others want a signed form. Ask the bank which channel it accepts from abroad.

Is there a fee to close a bank account in Nigeria?

The CBN Guide to Charges (2020) lists account closure as waived.

What documents do I need to close an account from Ghana?

Usually a signed request or the bank's form, your passport data page, and details of where to send any balance. Access Bank accepts passport plus visa or permit for diaspora customers.

What happens to my BVN if I close the account?

The BVN stays yours; it is not tied to a single account.
