Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to check a courier company is NIPOST-licensed

NIPOST licenses courier and logistics firms in Nigeria. How to confirm a dispatch company is licensed, what to ask for and what to do if it is not.

The short answer

Courier and logistics operators in Nigeria are licensed by NIPOST through its Courier and Logistics Regulatory Department (CLRD). NIPOST does not publish a simple public search page that we could find, so the reliable check is to ask the company for its NIPOST licence, note the category and expiry, and confirm it with the CLRD directly before you hand over goods or money.

Who licenses courier companies in Nigeria

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) regulates courier and logistics businesses through a dedicated department. In 2018 it was called the Courier Regulatory Department; by 2023 NIPOST was referring to it as the Courier and Logistics Regulatory Department (CLRD). The name has changed, but the job is the same: issuing licences, collecting renewal fees and clamping down on operators working without one.

The scale matters. In February 2023 NIPOST said that, as at December 2022, Nigeria had 716 licensed courier operators and around 500 unlicensed ones, according to ThisDay's report of the Postmaster General's remarks. In other words, at that count roughly four in ten operators NIPOST knew about were working without a licence. Many of the small dispatch-bike outfits you find on Instagram or WhatsApp sit in that grey area.

The licence categories you may see

NIPOST licenses operators by the area they cover. The 2023 figures broke down as follows:

CategoryNumber as at Dec 2022What it suggests
State / Special SMEOver 500Deliveries within one state; most small dispatch firms
RegionalEightSeveral states in one region
NationalOver 200Interstate deliveries across Nigeria
InternationalOver eightShipments into and out of Nigeria

The category is worth checking against what the company is offering you. A firm licensed only for one state that promises to move your parcel from Lagos to Kano, or to ship abroad, is either subcontracting the job or working outside its licence. Ask which it is.

NIPOST has also run an Independent/Solo Riders Scheme with instalment payment of licence fees, so a single rider can be licensed. A one-person operation is not automatically illegal.

How to check, step by step

  1. Ask the company for a copy of its NIPOST courier licence. A licensed operator should be able to show one without fuss.
  2. Read the company name on the licence and compare it with the name on the website, invoice and bank account you are being asked to pay. They should match.
  3. Note the licence category and the validity or renewal date. NIPOST has revoked licences in the past for unpaid renewals; in November 2018 it revoked 30 licences, citing lapsed renewals of up to three years.
  4. Check the company's registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission on the CAC public search. A courier licence is issued to a registered business, so the company should exist there too. Our guide on verifying a Nigerian company covers this.
  5. If you are sending something valuable, contact NIPOST's courier regulatory department at a NIPOST office and ask them to confirm the licence number. Use contact details from NIPOST's own website, not from the courier's flyer.
  6. Keep the waybill, the payment receipt and screenshots of the agreement until the item is delivered.

Why the licence matters to you as a sender

A licence does not guarantee good service, but it changes your position if something goes wrong. A licensed operator has a regulator it answers to and a licence it can lose, which gives you somewhere to escalate a complaint beyond the company's own customer care line. NIPOST's CLRD has said unlicensed operators face prosecution and routine clampdowns, so an unlicensed firm can also disappear mid-delivery if it is shut down.

  • Lost or damaged goods: keep proof of what you sent and its value. A declared value on the waybill helps any claim.
  • Payment to a personal account: treat it with care. A licensed business normally takes payment into an account in its registered name.
  • Pay-on-delivery collection: if a courier is collecting cash for you from buyers, you are trusting it with your money as well as your goods. Check the licence first.

Warning signs

  • No physical address, only a phone number. In 2018 NIPOST itself said a key problem with smaller operators was the lack of fixed, physical addresses.
  • Refuses to name its NIPOST licence category or sends a blurred image of a certificate.
  • Asks you to pay a 'customs clearance' or 'release' fee by transfer for a parcel you did not expect. This is a common scam pattern; see our piece on spotting scams.
  • Business name on the invoice differs from the name on the receiving bank account.

Where Pryme fits

If you run a small business that pays couriers or collects payments through them, a clear paper trail helps settle disputes. Pryme customers can generate a regular or a verifiable receipt for a payment, built with our partner VerifyDoc.ai, and the courier or anyone else can check that a verifiable one is genuine and unaltered. See receipts and statements or read proof of payment to suppliers.

Questions people ask

How do I know if a dispatch rider company is licensed by NIPOST?

Ask for its NIPOST courier licence, check the company name and category match what it offers, and confirm the licence with NIPOST's courier regulatory department using contact details from NIPOST's own site.

Is there a NIPOST list of licensed courier companies online?

We could not find a public searchable register on NIPOST's pages in October 2026. NIPOST has published licence numbers in news statements, but direct confirmation from NIPOST is the reliable check.

Can a one-man dispatch rider get a NIPOST licence?

Yes. NIPOST has described an Independent/Solo Riders Scheme with instalment payment of licence fees, so being a single rider does not by itself mean the operator is unlicensed.

What happens to unlicensed courier companies in Nigeria?

NIPOST says it runs routine clampdowns and that unlicensed operators risk prosecution. It has also revoked licences of operators that failed to renew.
