Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Chasing a Nigerian client who won't pay: options from the US

From a firm demand letter to US small claims, Lagos small claims and a Nigerian court action: what each route involves and when it is worth it.

The short answer

Start with a dated written demand that sets a deadline; many disputes end there. If not, a US small claims court is cheap but only useful if the client has US presence or assets, and California's limit, for example, is $12,500 for individuals. Against a client in Lagos, the Lagos Small Claims Court hears liquidated claims up to ₦5,000,000 after a 14-day letter of demand, and larger sums go to the ordinary Nigerian courts.

First, make sure it is a payment problem

Before treating a late payment as a dispute, check the boring causes. Nigerian companies often pay only after an internal approval chain, a purchase order, or the end-of-month payment run. Confirm that the invoice reached the person who approves payments, that it carries the details their finance team requires, and that it was not stuck because of a missing withholding tax detail. One clear email to finance, copying your contact, resolves a surprising share of "non-payment".

Step 1: the demand letter

If the client accepts the debt but does not pay, or goes silent, send a formal demand. It should state:

  1. The contract, the work delivered and the date it was accepted.
  2. Each unpaid invoice with its number, date and amount, and the total due.
  3. Any late-payment charge your contract allows, calculated to a date.
  4. A deadline, such as 14 days, and the account details for payment.
  5. What you will do if unpaid: name the route, whether US small claims, Lagos small claims or a lawyer's action.

Send it by email and keep proof of delivery. If you may use the Lagos Small Claims Court, the Lagos Practice Direction requires a letter of demand on Form SCA 1, giving the debtor 14 days to comply, before you file. Using that form from the start saves a step.

Step 2: pick the forum that matches the assets

A judgment only helps if you can collect it. Ask where the client's money is.

RouteBest whenKey facts
US small claimsClient has a US entity, US bank account or US customers paying itLimits are set by each state. California: up to $12,500 for individuals and $6,250 for businesses; no lawyers in the courtroom
Lagos Small Claims CourtClient is in Lagos, or the cause arose there, and the claim is a fixed sumLiquidated claims up to ₦5,000,000 excluding interest and costs; parties may represent themselves; filing to judgment in not more than 60 days under the Practice Direction
Nigerian High Court actionLarger sums, or the client is outside LagosNeeds a Nigerian lawyer; slower; enforceable against Nigerian assets
ArbitrationYour contract has an arbitration clauseFollows the clause; costs can be high for small sums

The problem with a US judgment

Winning in a US court against a client with no US assets often leaves you with paper. A June 2026 legal guide on Mondaq explains that Nigeria's foreign judgments registration statute has not been extended to the United States, so a US judgment is generally enforced by bringing a new action on it in Nigeria, within a period the guide puts at six years. That means paying a Nigerian lawyer anyway, which is why many US freelancers go straight to the Nigerian forum for Nigerian clients.

Using Lagos small claims from the US

Lagos is the small claims court most diaspora freelancers meet, because so many clients are there; other states run their own rules, so check the state where your client is. Points to plan for in Lagos:

  • A Lagos connection: the claimant or defendant lives or does business in Lagos, or the cause arose there.
  • Filing fees are set by the registry; the Practice Direction does not state amounts.
  • Virtual hearings are allowed, but someone may need to file papers in person. A trusted relative or a lawyer can help.
  • Bring documents: contract, invoices, emails accepting the work and the demand letter.

Worked example

Kemi, a developer in Maryland, is owed $3,000 by a Lagos startup. At an illustrative rate of ₦1,500 per dollar that is ₦4,500,000, inside the Lagos small claims ceiling. The startup has no US entity. A US small claims win would need a second action in Nigeria, so she serves Form SCA 1, waits 14 days, and asks a cousin in Lagos to file Form SCA 2 with her documents. If the debt were $5,000 (₦7,500,000 at the same example rate), it would exceed the ceiling, and she would need a lawyer in the High Court or would have to consider whether to limit the claim. The figures are examples; check the rate on the day you file.

Tax if you never get paid

On the cash method most freelancers use, income you never received was never reported, so there is no bad-debt deduction to claim for unpaid fees. If you already reported the income, ask a preparer about the treatment. Either way, keep the full paper trail: contract, invoices, the demand letter and any court papers, because they support whatever position you take on your return.

Where Pryme fits

Prevention is cheaper than collection. Taking deposits into a Pryme account, sending numbered invoices through invoicing, and keeping verifiable records with VerifyDoc.ai give you the documents any court will ask for. Our contract points for Nigerian clients cover the clauses that make recovery easier.

Questions people ask

How do I sue a Nigerian client from America?

Choose the forum where the client's assets are. For Lagos clients and fixed sums up to ₦5,000,000, the Lagos Small Claims Court is often the practical route; larger claims need a Nigerian lawyer.

Can I use US small claims against a company in Nigeria?

You may be able to file, but collecting a US judgment in Nigeria generally needs a new court action there, per a June 2026 legal guide.

What is the first step before Lagos small claims?

Serve a letter of demand on Form SCA 1 giving 14 days to pay, as the Lagos Practice Direction requires.

Can I represent myself in the Lagos Small Claims Court?

Yes. The Practice Direction allows parties to represent themselves; someone may still need to handle filing in Lagos.
